FALL 2011 SEMESTER<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Syllabus</strong>AcademicIntegrity:The integrity of the classes offered by any academic institution solidifies thefoundation of its mission and cannot be sacrificed to expediency, ignorance, orblatant fraud. Therefore, the instructor will enforce rigorous standards ofacademic integrity in all aspects and assignments of this course.There is a range of penalties possible for academic integrity violations, but undernormal circumstances the penalties are as below. The penalties can be moresevere, up to and including an unforgivable F for the course.OccurrenceFirst OccurrenceSecond Occurrence orAfterStandard PenaltiesLoss of credit for the item involved, plus an additional40-point penalty.Failing grade (F) for the course. This penalty can beapplied even if the student had no notice of the FirstOccurrence violation.Examples of academic integrity violations include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:• Collaborating or working with another person on any assignment. You mustdo your own work on all assignments. All your work must be createdentirely by you, having worked independently.• Fraudulent or inappropriate use of the CS<strong>101</strong> attendance system.• Submitting the work of someone else, even unintentionally. You must create ablank new file of your own for each submission unless otherwise instructed –do not reuse even an empty file.• Allowing, either intentionally or unintentionally, someone else access to yourfile. If another person submits your work, no matter the circumstances, youwill be penalized. It is your responsibility to protect and control access to yourfiles at all times.• Impersonating another individual or allowing someone to impersonate you.Violations of this rule will result in an automatic F or unforgivable F for thecourse.• Submitting work created in another semester or for another course.• Submitting assignments other than what was assigned for your section.• Plagiarism.• Using disallowed materials (textbook, Internet, or any other resources) onexams unless otherwise explicitly permitted.• Unauthorized use, possession, or attempted access of an exam or homeworkproject. Violations of this rule will result in an automatic F or unforgivable F forthe course.• Submitting work completed in Open Lab during a period in which you werebanned from attending Open Lab.• Failure to participate in or successfully complete an Academic Integrity PolicyCompliance Audit.If that an academic integrity violation is suspected, you will be notified via e-mailor certified mail. Students may appeal this finding to their instructor or the coursecoordinator within seven calendar days of the date of the first notice. If you have any questionsabout this policy or if an activity is allowed, it is your responsibility to check withyour instructor beforehand.All students must complete and sign the Academic Integrity PolicyAcknowledgement Form to participate in this class. Credit will not be granted forwork due prior to when this form is completed. This may result in an F grade forthe course.At any time, the CS<strong>101</strong> staff may choose to audit a student’s compliance with thisAcademic Integrity Policy. Students who fail to successfully complete the Auditwill lose all credit for assignments being audited and will lose all bonus points.The Audit may also lead to the finding of academic integrity violations.The CS<strong>101</strong> websites listed at the beginning of this document and your MIX e-mailaccount are important means through which we disseminate information. You will not receive any accommodations because you neglected to checkthe websites or your e-mail in a timely (at least daily) manner.Your MasterID account will be used to login to CS<strong>101</strong> computers and access avariety of functions on the CS<strong>101</strong> website throughout the semester, includingviewing and submitting attendance and grade records.You must activate your MasterID account at http://masterid.wvu.edu if you havenot done so already. A video demonstration and additional information onMasterID is available at http://cs<strong>101</strong>.wvu.edu/masterid. MasterID is administeredby the Office of Information Technology. Issues can be addressed with them bycalling the OIT Help Desk at (304) 293-4444.It is your responsibility to make sure that your MasterID account is functioningcorrectly. This may require you to contact OIT Help Desk. Failure to have aworking MasterID account may prevent you from participating in the course,submitting attendance or submitting assignments and can negatively impact yourCS<strong>101</strong> grade.If your MasterID username is different than your MIX username, such as if you area <strong>University</strong> employee, please notify your instructor so this can be corrected in ourrecords.Homework assignments are an important tool in helping students to learn thematerial covered in the course and in allowing the instructors to assess a student’sperformance. Homework assignments are graded based on a rubric provided witheach assignment.Homework assignments are to be submitted through the submission tool on theCS<strong>101</strong> website by 11:59pm Eastern Time on the date they are due. If multiplesubmissions are received, we will grade the most recent one. Submissions mustbe in the correct, expected file format for the application used. It is your responsibility to retain copies of all your submitted files.Homework assignments not submitted by the due date, for whatever the reason,are considered late and are subject to a 20% penalty per calendar day. The actualpoint value of the penalty is calculated against your final score on the project. Atthe end of the semester, there may be some assignments that will not beaccepted late at all. If you do submit an assignment late, you must e-mail yourinstructor to notify them of your submission.To help you learn the material covered in CS<strong>101</strong>, there are five Lessons assignedin the MyITLab computer-based training software over the course of the semester.Each Lesson contains questions from several textbook chapters; on average, thereare about 45 questions per Lesson. Some of the MyITLab Lessons are due beforethe content they cover is taught in class to help us use the in-class time moreefficiently.MyITLab Lessons are set up in a pretest-training-posttest arrangement. Allstudents must begin by completing a pretest; depending upon performance,training material may be assigned. Upon completion of any required trainingmaterial, the posttest can be completed. You must completeregistration in a timely manner or you will risk completing your assignments late.We will not grant any extensions because of a failure to register for MyITLab ontime. Also, failure to properly complete MyITLab registration may jeopardize yourability to receive credit for your work.MyITLab Lessons are considered open book and open resources (SupplementalContent, notes, Internet, Help system, etc.). You must, however, complete theLessons on your own in accordance with the Academic Integrity Policy. Please beaware that Open Lab staff will not provide assistance in completing MyITLabLessons.If you encounter technical difficulties in completing the MyITLab Lessons, youmust notify your instructor via e-mail immediately. Failure to do so mayjeopardize your ability to receive credit for the assignments. It is yourresponsibility to complete the assignment on time, no matter what problems youmay encounter. Nooutside resources or individuals may help you with the exam. You may, however,use the built-in Microsoft Office Help system.You must bring your WVU ID to all exams. Failure to produce a valid WVU ID ordriver license will result in forfeiture of your attempt to take the exam. Nomakeup exam will be granted in this circumstance and you will not receive anycredit for the exam.Each exam must be completed in one contiguous sitting. For Exams #1 and #2,you will have 60 minutes to complete the exam plus an additional period of up to10 minutes to review the instructions before starting. For the Final Exam, you willhave 120 minutes to complete the exam plus an additional period of up to 10minutes to review the instructions before starting. These time limits may exceedthe regularly-scheduled class period; any time beyond the normal class period isprovided strictly as a courtesy. If you arrive late to the exam or leave early forany reason, you forfeit any time you miss.If you are unable to attend an exam because of a scheduled event or Day ofSpecial Concern, you must provide your instructor with notice at least one week inadvance. If the event is WVU-sponsored, you must provide a written or e-mailnote from the associated WVU coach or faculty member. For any other event orreason, your instructor will determine what documentation (if any) is required andwill authorize a makeup exam at their discretion.If you miss an exam because of a personal, family or medical emergency, youmust notify your instructor no later than 36 hours after the scheduled start time ofthe original exam. If you fail to notify your instructor within the time period, youwill lose credit for the exam in question. Your instructor will determine whatdocumentation (if any) is required and will authorize a makeup exam at theirdiscretion.All makeup exams must be completed within four weekdays after the originalscheduled exam date. Exams not completed in this period will be ineligible forcredit. You must make arrangements with your instructor to take the makeupexam. If you fail to attend the scheduled make-up time, you will forfeit yourability to make-up the exam.There will be no makeup exams given for the Final Exam. You must take theexam at the designated time to receive credit.All students enrolled in on-campus CS<strong>101</strong> sections must take their exams duringthe regular scheduled time. CS<strong>101</strong> Extended Learning students who are alsoenrolled in on-campus courses must take their exam with another CS<strong>101</strong> section ifthey are also enrolled in other on-campus courses. Students only enrolled inExtended Learning courses may make arrangements with their CS<strong>101</strong> instructortake exams in a proctored test environment (generally, a library, school orcollege). All arrangements are subject to approval by their instructor. FALL 2011 SEMESTER<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Syllabus</strong>Attendance:InclementWeather:Regular attendance is important to help in learning the material covered in CS<strong>101</strong>.You are responsible for all material covered and will lose credit for any in-classassignments you miss.To reward regular attendance, up to 30 bonus points will be offered this semesterto on-campus students. Using a web-based attendance system athttp://cs<strong>101</strong>.wvu.edu/attendance/, students will sign-in to record their attendanceat all class meetings. Students who do not sign-in or who fail to notify theirinstructor of any errors or problems will not receive attendance credit. If there isno record of your attendance, you will not receive credit.You must be present to have your attendance recorded. No credit will be awardedfor students missing classes, even if it is for an excused absence (this includesmedical reasons, military commitments, Days of Special Concern, WVU events orother factors beyond the student’s control). For the purposes of extra credit, wewill begin counting during the second week of class (Fall and Spring semesters) oron the second day (Summer sessions). While you must sign-in on exam days, wedo not award attendance credit for attending class during an exam.Fraudulent use of the attendance system is considered a violation of the CS<strong>101</strong>Academic Integrity Policy and will result in action as indicated in that section of thesyllabus. If you believe your attendance login was incorrectly flagged for fraud,you must notify your instructor immediately or you will be subject to penalties.Examples of fraud include, but are not limited to:• Leaving class early or arriving late and signing-in for attendance withoutpermission from your instructor.• Signing-in from a location other than your classroom during the scheduledclass time.• Signing-in another student or having someone else sign you in.Attendance bonus credit will be awarded according to the below schedule.Attendance fraud violations will make you ineligible for this bonus.On-Campus SectionsSections 19 and 21Monday/Wednesday SectionsTuesday/Thursday SectionsBonus Points (up to 30 points total)1.3 points per day (24 lecture days)1.25 points per day (25 lecture days)1.2 points per day (26 lecture days)Attendance bonus points are only given for lecture days. It is possible to earn full credit while still missing onelecture day, but you cannot earn more than 30 points even if you attend all days.The CS<strong>101</strong> staff reserves the right to modify or terminate the attendance bonus atany time and for any reason. We also reserve the right to refuse to award theattendance bonus to any student for any reason we deem appropriate.On rare occasions, CS<strong>101</strong> classes or Open Lab may be cancelled due to inclementweather. Allstandard policies regarding academic integrity apply to the bonus credit.The CS<strong>101</strong> staff reserves the right to modify or terminate the Extended Learningbonus at any time and for any reason. We also reserve the right to refuse toaward the Extended Learning bonus to any student for any reason we deemappropriate. Students enrolled in Extended Learning sections are ineligible for theattendance bonus.In-ClassParticipationBonus:Throughout the semester, instructors can award up to 20 bonus points for in-classparticipation-based activities in on-campus sections. These bonus points areawarded at the discretion of the instructor. Students must be present in class atthe time(s) these points are awarded to be eligible to earn them. There will be nomake-ups or excused absences for the purpose of the participation bonus.The CS<strong>101</strong> staff reserves the right to modify or terminate the participation bonusat any time and for any reason. We also reserve the right to refuse to award theparticipation bonus to any student for any reason we deem appropriate.Open Lab:An Open Lab, staffed with CS<strong>101</strong> instructors and proctors, will be provided on aweekly basis. The Open Lab will be held in 219 Armstrong Hall with a scheduleavailable at http://cs<strong>101</strong>.wvu.edu/openlab/.Open Lab is for you to obtain assistance in completing your homework or inlearning the material, not for the staff to do your work for you. It is not areplacement for regular class attendance. You must study the course textbookand other content and have attempted the assignment before the Open Lab staffcan help you. You must bring your textbook to Open Lab – if you do not have it,we cannot assist you.Failure to follow these guidelines or to otherwise behave in an appropriate mannerwill result in your removal from Open Lab or in the refusal of assistance. OpenLab staff may also refuse assistance if you have not attended class regularly.Historically, Open Lab has been less busy during the beginning of the week. Wehave a limited number of staff members and computers, so please understandthat if you wait until shortly before an assignment is due you will have to waitlonger for assistance.Enrollment:According to WVU policy, you must be properly enrolled and current on all tuitionand fees to participate in class. If you are removed from the course for thesereasons, it is your responsibility to resolve the problem with Admissions &Records. FALL 2011 SEMESTER<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Syllabus</strong>Time andWorkloadExpectation:PrivacyRights:• Cell phones and pagers must be set to vibrate or turned off during class.• Physical abuse of equipment or furniture will not be tolerated.• Instructors, proctors, staff, and other students are to be treated in aprofessional, courteous manner.The above actions disturb other students and it is important to respect their rightto a good learning environment. Violations may result in a grade penalty of atleast 10 points per occurrence or refusal to accept work being completed at thetime of the violation. Violators may also be banned from Open Lab and/or fromattending class.CS<strong>101</strong> is a 4-credit hour course. Only two of these hours are spent in lecture, soyou are expected to spend the other time on your own studying and learning thecourse material. To help ensure that the out-of-class time commitment is met,consider scheduling time for it just as if it were a regular course.The workload for this course (assignments, studying, etc.) is commensurate with a4-credit course. This requires a commitment on your part to obtain good grades.Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, students have aright to the privacy of their educational information including grades. A FERPAwaiver must be on file with CS<strong>101</strong> or the Registrar before we can releaseinformation on a student’s performance to outside parties including a student’sparents.Disabilities:Please be aware that we use classroom management software to help facilitatebetter teaching and student performance. Through this software, your usage ofCS<strong>101</strong> computers and systems may be monitored.If you believe that you have a disability that may affect your performance in thiscourse, it is your responsibility to contact the WVU Office of Disability Services at(304) 293-6700. Written documentation from Disability Services must beprovided to your instructor in-person before any accommodations can be granted.If you are authorized for and wish to receive accommodations for an exam (e.g.,additional time, a different test setting, etc.), your instructor must receive noticeof your authorization and request at least one week prior to the exam. It is yourresponsibility to arrange the accommodations with your instructor.
