FALL 2011 SEMESTER<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Syllabus</strong>ExtendedLearningBonus:Students in Extended Learning sections of CS<strong>101</strong> will be provided withopportunities throughout the semester to earn up to 50 points of bonus credit. Allstandard policies regarding academic integrity apply to the bonus credit.The CS<strong>101</strong> staff reserves the right to modify or terminate the Extended Learningbonus at any time and for any reason. We also reserve the right to refuse toaward the Extended Learning bonus to any student for any reason we deemappropriate. Students enrolled in Extended Learning sections are ineligible for theattendance bonus.In-ClassParticipationBonus:Throughout the semester, instructors can award up to 20 bonus points for in-classparticipation-based activities in on-campus sections. These bonus points areawarded at the discretion of the instructor. Students must be present in class atthe time(s) these points are awarded to be eligible to earn them. There will be nomake-ups or excused absences for the purpose of the participation bonus.The CS<strong>101</strong> staff reserves the right to modify or terminate the participation bonusat any time and for any reason. We also reserve the right to refuse to award theparticipation bonus to any student for any reason we deem appropriate.Open Lab:An Open Lab, staffed with CS<strong>101</strong> instructors and proctors, will be provided on aweekly basis. The Open Lab will be held in 219 Armstrong Hall with a scheduleavailable at http://cs<strong>101</strong>.wvu.edu/openlab/.Open Lab is for you to obtain assistance in completing your homework or inlearning the material, not for the staff to do your work for you. It is not areplacement for regular class attendance. You must study the course textbookand other content and have attempted the assignment before the Open Lab staffcan help you. You must bring your textbook to Open Lab – if you do not have it,we cannot assist you.Failure to follow these guidelines or to otherwise behave in an appropriate mannerwill result in your removal from Open Lab or in the refusal of assistance. OpenLab staff may also refuse assistance if you have not attended class regularly.Historically, Open Lab has been less busy during the beginning of the week. Wehave a limited number of staff members and computers, so please understandthat if you wait until shortly before an assignment is due you will have to waitlonger for assistance.Enrollment:According to WVU policy, you must be properly enrolled and current on all tuitionand fees to participate in class. If you are removed from the course for thesereasons, it is your responsibility to resolve the problem with Admissions &Records. We cannot provide you with any extensions or makeups for your workbecause of problems caused by your enrollment status.Class andOpen LabConduct:Introduction to <strong>Computer</strong> Applications<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>• Be attentive during class meetings. Do not use the computers for purposesother than those related to CS<strong>101</strong>.• Do not complete assignments for this or any other course during classmeetings unless otherwise told by the instructor.• Do not be late to arrive or early to leave.• Do not converse with others or be disruptive.• Do not eat, drink, use chewing tobacco or read newspapers while in the CS<strong>101</strong>facilities.Page 10 of 11 Version 24.2Modified 8/21/2011
