Superb SANTA CATHERINAcds at left (Sept 9) and stamps cancelled in blue (both by segmented and by dotted 'star'cancel) and also by oval framed INSUFICIENTE in red. Marked '2' in manuscript in redon front for double rate; reverse with Rio transit cds in blue (Sept 15) and German arrivaland marked '3' in manuscript in red to collect. Unusually not charged with French chargemarking with obverse showing BRESIL / AMB. CALAIS E (Oct 19) entry mark (Salles 1186)in black. Stamps folded over envelope and a few flaws but a scarce cover. 59 6 300 (€ 250)200 r. black horizontal pair used on registered 1870 entire letter from Porto Alegre to Riode Janeiro cancelled by unidentified circular handstamp with oval framed REGISTRADAalongside, both struck in black. Rio cds (June 25) on reverse. Struck with traingular'T' marking and carried on the Paquebot 'Mendoza' with fair LIGNE J / PAQ. FR. No. 4datestamp (July 10) alongside in black (Salles 1063). Reverse with Pernambuco transit (July4) and Paris arrival cds (July 30). Charged '3 francs 80 c.' in manuscript. Usual ageing andedge wear but a rare usage. 59 6 300 (€ 250)
