Page 3A note from the SuperintendentMIKE KEARNSGolf Course SuperintendentAnother summer of golf is upon us and withthe warm, dry weather we have been receivingthis month, the golf course is in nice conditionand seems to have weathered the rainy winterquite well. Our spring greens aeration was a success andthe putting surfaces have recovered nicely. Wewill continue with our regular light top dressingprogram this season in order to keep the greensas smooth as possible and minimize thatch buildup. Please remember to repair your ball markand one other on the greens, as this will go a longway in keeping our greens healthy and smooth. The maintenance crew has been busy at work thisspring on a number of projects, with the mostnoticeable being the improvements to our courselandscaping and gardens. To date, we haveCrown Isle Staff FeatureJody Greaves - Retail SupervisorAlthough she spent the early years of herchildhood on the Queen Charlotte Islands,Jody was born and grew up in the ComoxValley. She has been toFiji, New Zealand, Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, and most recently, Japan, where a monkeyattacked her! She wasn’t badly hurt, just a fewcuts and scrapes, but it’s a great story – anotherplanted over 160 new trees, added 21 new gardens, and mulched and cleaned up under some of thelarger trees on Holes 1 and 9. We are currentlyin the process of planting 400 rhododendronsthroughout the property and plan to continuethese landscaping improvements throughoutthe year. This spring, we implemented the first stage in theupgrade of our irrigation system. We have addedan updated control system, installed 21 newsatellite boxes and have begun replacing some ofour older sprinkler heads. These improvementswill give us better control of our water usageand the new sprinkler heads will improve theuniformity of our water coverage.Along with the entire maintenance team, I amvery excited about the improvements that we aremaking to the golf course, and thank you for yourpatience as we work through these projects.Jody in front of atemple in the city ofNara, Japanone she can add to thelong list of funny storiesshe’s accumulated onher journeys.
