Alex Xavier, Lakshmana Moorthi,Thirunavukaras, Prabhakaran, ParthaSarathy, PrabhuOVERALL CHAMPIONSHIPSRepresenting the Department of Physics Loyola College, our students took part in the inter collegiate competitions and other talent search events organisedby various others colleges and won quite many prizes and added laurels to the department.1. The following students participated and won the overall Championship in RIPPLES’ 11 which was held on 19 th & 20 th January,2012 in Ethiraj College,Department of Physics. The following students participated and won the overall Championship in ELECTRA’ 11 which was held on 19 th September,2012 in the Department ofPhysics, Stella Maris College. 3. The over all Championship was bagged by our students in the intercollegiate competition SPECTRA’11organizedby Madras Christian College. The participants were George, Aneesh, Srikanth, Jeyadev, Manoj, Britto David, Theope Raja, Isaac, Kishen, R.Prasad, Abel, Ajay,Jegadish, Meitiengba, Arun, Naveen. 5. In the inter collegiate meet organized by Women’s Christian College, the following students participated and won theoverall championship. PLANT BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGYASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES/STUDENT ACTIVITIES/ STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTSThe Loyola Association of Plant Biologists and Biotechnologists (LAPB) was inaugurated on September 08, 2011. The Chief Guest for the day was Dr. T. S.Lokeshwari, Head, Department of Biotechnology, School of Biomedical Sciences, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Porur, Chennai. Dr. T. Mani took over from Dr.G. Jeyajothi, as the President for the Academic Year 2011 – 2012. Prof. Jacintha John was appointed as the Vice – President.THE FOLLOWING WERE THE OTHER OFFICE BEARERS:1. Manoj Prabhu G., Secretary, 2. Sojan P. P., Cultural Secretary, 3. Joe Arul Raj A., Sports Secretary 4. Sahil Gill, Joint Secretary (2 nd B. Sc.,), 5. Sc.,)Students participated in many cultural fests held by the other city colleges. Our Department won Jointly at “Madhulika” held at SDNB Vaishnav College,Chromepet. We won the first prize in Adzap and bagged the 2 nd place in Jewellery designing and Collage.The students participated and received the overall winners cup at “Microfest” and “Lantana” – hosted by the Departments of Microbiology and Plant Biology& Plant Biotechnology respectively of Ethiraj College. The troupe coveted the 1 st place in Adzap and Collage. Junk Art and Paper Presentation were also added toour kitty.On the 9 th of December, the department hosted “Genotsav ‘11" – the annual Inter – collegiate Department Festival. More than 10 colleges participated in the9 different events. Women Christian College won the overall winners trophy and Bharathi womens College which came runners-up. The active participation that wewitnessed this year was a record of sorts and we hope to emulate the same time and again.Our Department won the 1 st consolation prize in the Inter-Departmental Carol Singing Competition that was held at Loyola College.STUDY TOURField trips and industrial visits were organized.i) One day Algal Collection trip to Muttukadu, Kovelam and Mamallapuram was conducted on 28 th September for the first year under graduate students of thedepartment. ii)Three days field trip to Kodaikanal was organized from 3 rd to 5 th of March for the first year under graduate students of the department to studythe major plant groups. iii) One day trip to SKOL Breweries Ltd., and Aurospirul, Pondicherry was arranged for the third year students of the department tostudy Spirulina cultivation and Brewing technolgogy, iv II.M.Sc., Biotechnology students were taken for an industrial tour to Indo American hybrid seeds,Bangalore and CFTRI, Mysore during sep 28 to 01 Oct 2011. They had an enriching exposure in both these places. Dr. Kingsley, Coordinator, Ms. JenniferUdaya staff and Mr. Preetam Raj, lab instructor accompanied them.CAMPUS RECRUITMENT AND PLACEMENT:1. Annie Infancia 10 PBT 20 our II M.Sc., Biotech student got the placement in Zifo Tech, Chennai with an annual take home salary of 2.10 Lakhs.2. 6 students of III B. Sc., got placement in Panacea Biotech with the take home salary of 1.44 lakhs.ENDOWMENT LECTURES:1. Prof. C.R. Babujee Endowment Lecture (2007). Instituted by Mrs. Akhilandeswari wife of Prof. C.R. Wilson, retired faculty, Department of Botany (Rs. 10,000).ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS:I.M.Sc., Biotech team won 1 st Prize in Pulse Rangoli and Abbijet Paul (11 PBT 04) bagged 3 rd Prize on drawing competition conducted as a part of GreenFestat Loyola College.FORUM FOR INTELLECTUAL GROWTH STIMULATIONIn order to encourage creative participation of M.Sc., Biotechnology Students, FIGS 12 (Forum for Intellectual Growth Stimulation) was formed.
