Major themes of the workshop includec<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> and management issues in alpine pastures; rangelandmanagement and wildlife; sociological and ec<strong>on</strong>omic issues; and impact ofrecent changes and developments. The specific objectives of the workshopwere:• To review the state of present knowledge <strong>on</strong> the management of livestockvis-a-vis availability of grazing resources in the alpine pastures.• To understand the critical issues related to the carrying capacity ofpastoralism.• To identify gaps for further research with regard to changing socioec<strong>on</strong>omicc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of the pastoral communities, and impact of educati<strong>on</strong>and integrati<strong>on</strong> to global market ec<strong>on</strong>omy.58E N V IS C entre, G B P IH E D
