THORNTON HOSPITAL, UCSD MEDICAL CENTERLocation: 9300 Campus Point Drive La Jolla, CA 92037Directly west of Moores UCSD Cancer Center.Contact: (858) 657-7000At times, patients undergoing cancer treatment will need inpatient services or certaintests and procedures that are not available within the Moores UCSD Cancer Centerbuilding.Thornton Hospital, of UCSD Medical Center, is an affiliate of the Cancer Center.Patients needing surgery, in-patient treatment, and certain radiology procedures will betreated, for those specific medical services, at Thornton Hospital. Emergency servicesare available at Thornton Hospital and at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest.Important Information• Your Moores UCSD Cancer Center healthcare team will give you the informationyou need prior to your appointment, including when and where to check in.• Transport is available between Moores UCSD Cancer Center and Thornton Hospital.Your nurse will arrange your transportation, when necessary.• You are encouraged to bring a family member or friend with you to yourappointment. Please do not bring children to Thornton Hospital.• There are no specified visiting hours at Thornton Hospital. The only after-hoursentrance is through the Emergency Department.• A cafeteria, open 7:00 am – 7:00 pm, and room service are available for yourconvenience.12

We ensure that, from your very first visit tothe Cancer Center, you will never feel alone.This uniquely integrated team of cancer experts includes social workers, psychologists,psychiatrists, palliative care specialists, and volunteers. All programs and services aretailored to the needs of our patients, their families, and the community and arescientifically evaluated to ensure that they enhance medical treatment, maximizecoping, and improve quality of life.• Each healthcare team includes a social worker who will remain a key part of yourhealthcare team from diagnosis through treatment.• Early on in your treatment, you will complete the How Can We Help You and YourFamily? questionnaire that quickly communicates concerns and problems to yourhealthcare team, allowing us to respond quickly to your needs.• We offer supportive and therapeutic groups for patients and their families, such asgeneral groups, groups by cancer type, stress-management groups (including yoga andmeditation), creativity groups, and educational workshops. Most of these programsare at no cost to you. Look for our monthly Calendar of Activities in the CancerCenter lobby or online: cancer.ucsd.edu/wecare.• Individual, couples, and family counseling, as well as medication evaluation andmanagement, are readily available to help you cope with the psychologicalchallenges of cancer.• Find the most up-to-date information about your illness and community resourcesat our Patient and Family Education Center, located on the first floor of the CancerCenter.13
