32 Part I: Careers in Military Aviation
Advanced helicopter training, also at Whiting Field,
includes basic landing pattern work, instrument flying,
reading charts, low-level contour flying, formations,
tactical approaches, external loads, and confined-area
landings.
Upon successful completion of advanced training,
helicopter-designated students earn their wings and become
naval aviators. About one year of training time is required
to become a naval aviator. Transitional training and
subsequent assignment to the aviation fleet follows.
Transitional training for those who will fly the
HH-65A Dolphin or the HH-60J Jayhawk helicopters is
given at the Coast Guard Training Center, Mobile,
Alabama.
Prerequisites for eligibility are that the applicant
n Be less than 30 years of age.
n Be physically qualified and aeronautically adapted
according to Coast Guard standards; must meet
anthropometric standards.
n Have 20/20 vision, normal color vision, and depth
perception. Waivers are routinely granted to
applicants who have 20/50 or better vision
correctable to 20/20.
n Must achieve a qualifying score on the Pilot Flight
Aptitude Rating (PFAR) and the Pilot Biographical
Interest (PBI) in the Navy and Marine Corps
Aviation Test Selection Battery.
Coast Guard Academy graduates must serve for at least one
year at their first duty station before being considered by a
Selection Board for flight training. Service evaluations are
used by the Selection Board in making its final selections.
Officer Candidate School (OCS) graduates may go directly
into flight training upon being commissioned in the Coast
Guard Reserve.
Service Commitment: Active duty obligation is five
years from date of designation as naval aviator.
Direct Commission Aviation
Program
The Coast Guard commissions a limited number of prior
service aviators. A selection board is convened when the
needs of the service dictate. Those selected spend four
weeks at the Coast Guard Academy in New London,
Connecticut, for Coast Guard orientation and then undergo
any necessary transitional training (usually minimal) prior
to reporting to their first duty station.
Prerequisites for eligibility are that the applicant
n Be a U.S. citizen at least 21 years of age but under
32 as of convening of orientation course.
n Be a graduate of a U.S. military flight training
program.
n Must not be on active duty with another service
unless application includes an approved release or
resignation.
n Must have served on active duty as a commissioned
or warrant officer, and as a pilot for a
minimum of two years, but not more than ten
years.
n Must have a minimum of 500 hours military flight
time. (This does not include training hours.)
n Must have had full-time military or civilian pilot
experience within two years of published application
deadline.
n Must pass a Class 1, Service Group 1, flight
physical as specified in Chapter 3 of the Coast
Guard Medical Manual.
n Must have a baccalaureate degree, or must have
attained 25th-percentile scores on all parts of the
DANTES General Examinations of the College-
Level Examination Program, or must have completed
one year of study (30 semester hours or 45
quarter hours) at an accredited degree-granting
college or university, and
1. Have satisfactorily completed one college-level
course in mathematics, or
2. Have passed the DANTES General Mathematics
Examination of the College-Level Examination
Program.
Service Commitment: Prior service aviators who were
commissioned officers in the other services receive a
commission as Lieutenant (junior grade, O–2), or ensign,
(O–1) in the Coast Guard Reserve.
All must serve four years of active duty. As the tour
nears completion they have the same opportunity as other
reserve officers to either request integration into the regular
Coast Guard or be extended on active duty. These requests
are granted on the basis of individual performance and the
current needs of the service.
Date of rank will coincide with the date of
appointment to commissioned status in the Coast Guard.
Prior service time is creditable for base pay and retirement
benefits, but not for promotion.
As a Coast Guard pilot, you could
n Be part of a search and rescue team, evacuating
flood victims, rescuing boaters in a storm, or
delivering pumps to a burning ship on the high seas
n Give aerial assistance in the patrol and enforcement
of the 200-mile fishing conservation zone
