STRATEGIES FOR PREPARING
FOR AND TAKING MILITARY FLIGHT
APTITUDE TESTS
PREPARING FOR THE TEST
Here are ten strategies to help you set a routine for studying
and to make the most of your time.
1. Become familiar with the format of multiplechoice
test items. These items are used exclusively
in written tests given by the military in the
selection process for flight training programs.
2. Become familiar with the layout of machinescored
answer sheets. Know the proper way to
record your answers in the spaces provided,
whether they are brackets, rectangles, squares,
ovals, or circles. Standard answer sheets are not
complicated if you understand the layout and
have practiced blackening the answer space in
the correct manner.
3. Find out what your test covers. Once you
determine the military flight aptitude test or
tests in which you are interested, ascertain what
the test or tests will cover. This book, as well as
the officer in charge of aviation officer
recruiting or a recruiting representative, is an
excellent source for invaluable suggestions and
guidance.
4. Review the subject matter covered in the test
you select. Books and other study material may
be borrowed from libraries or purchased in
bookstores. Review the next section of this
book carefully. It covers the various types of
questions used by the military in the flight
aptitude tests.
5. Take the specimen test as if it were the real
one under actual test conditions. Record your
answers on the specimen answer sheet. Keep
within the allotted time limits. Work quickly but
carefully.
6. Check your answers with the answers and
explanations provided after each. For those
questions that you answered incorrectly, determine
why your original answers are incorrect.
Make certain that you understand the rationale
for arriving at the correct answer. This is
essential to broaden your background, increase
your test-taking skills, and prepare you for the
real test.
7. Set aside definite hours each day for
concentrated study. Adhere closely to this
schedule. Don’t fritter away your time with
excessive breaks. A cup of coffee, a piece of
fruit, a look out of the window are fine—but not
too often.
8. Study with a friend or a group. The exchange
of ideas that this arrangement affords may be
beneficial. It is also more pleasant to get
together in study sessions than it is to study
alone.
9. Eliminate distractions. Study efforts will
prove more fruitful when there is little or no
diversion of attention. Disturbances caused by
family and neighbor activities (telephone calls,
chitchat, TV programs, etc.) will work to your
disadvantage. Study in a quiet, private room.
10. Use the library. Most colleges and universities
have excellent library facilities. Take advantage
of your public library. Libraries are free from
distractions that can inhibit your home study.
To reemphasize, take each practice test as though you were
taking the real test. With this attitude, you get greater
benefits. Put yourself under strict test conditions. Tolerate
no interruptions while you are “taking the test.” Work
steadily. Do not spend too much time on any one question.
