He <strong>is</strong> l<strong>is</strong>ted on a website “Marinesof Ir<strong>is</strong>h Descent.” One look atth<strong>is</strong> man’s face tells you that he <strong>is</strong>the personification of rugged individual<strong>is</strong>m.Winner of two Medals ofHonor, the first as a “China Marine,”won on the evening of August 14,1900 occupying a barricade in thecity of Peking, China during theBoxer Rebellion, he single-handedlyheld h<strong>is</strong> position through thenight. At dawn 200 Boxers weredead. He was awarded the Medalof Honor December 11, 1901. 1914found him fighting at Vera Cruze inthe Mexican-<strong>American</strong> War. October24, 1915 fighting the Cacos inHaiti he again d<strong>is</strong>tingu<strong>is</strong>hed himselfin battle. Gunnery Sergeant Dalyfought with exceptional gallantryand at age 44 won h<strong>is</strong> second Medalof Honor. Next we find him withthe <strong>American</strong> expeditionary forcein France. The 5th and 6th Marineregiments were fighting at BelleauWood. It was here gunnery sergeantDan Daly urged h<strong>is</strong> rifleman forwardinto murderous enemy fire yelling,“Come on you Sons-of-Bitches!, Doyou want to live forever?”When the 5th and 6th Marine regimentsarrived at the Muse Argonnethe French were retreating and urgingthe Marines to retreat. U.S.M.C.Captain Lloyd Williams cried, “RetreatHell! We just got here!”Gunnery sergeant Dan Daly was5’6” tall and 132 pounds. He smokeda pipe and never drank. He retiredfrom the Corp February 26, 1929 asa Sergeant Major. He died April 28,1937 at age 65. He remained singleh<strong>is</strong> entire life. By the way, he wasborn November 11, 1873 whichwas celebrated as Arm<strong>is</strong>tice Dayfollowing World War 1, which <strong>is</strong>now known as Veteran’s Day.There <strong>is</strong> a Belleau Wood Memorialin the Cook County ForestPreserve at Rand and Ballard Rd.in Des Plaines Illino<strong>is</strong>. Youcould feel the excitement, everyoneeager for the ribbon cutting. But notso fast, we had speeches to make andpeople we needed to thank. It wouldbe impossible to recall all that wassaid. Healy Jr.,Library Fund Chairman recalled theevents of the Library Fund dinners, thedinner committees and the entertainment.The arts wing was filled withmany luminaries. Among the guestswere Charles Sheahan, Consul Generalof Ireland and h<strong>is</strong> wife, Alice. MartinHealy’s s<strong>is</strong>ter Eileen, and her husbandJohn Morrow. The library book repositoryhas been dedicated to the memoryof Martin’s parents, Martin J. HealySr. from Swinford, Co. Mayo and h<strong>is</strong>wife Mary C. Henneghan, from Tourmakeady,Co Mayo. Also in the crowdwas Neil Hartigan, former LieutenantGovernor and Appellate Court Judge;Bill Mitchell and h<strong>is</strong> wife, Carolyn.Jim Sloan was m<strong>is</strong>sing as he had goneto California to spend time with h<strong>is</strong> son,1st Lieutenant James Sloan, USMC.(l to r): Teárlach Ó Cathail, Peg Reid, and Denn<strong>is</strong> Sherwood ready theIr<strong>is</strong>h <strong>American</strong> Heritage Center library for its opening to the public.Denn<strong>is</strong> Daly, a major benefactor wastheir with h<strong>is</strong> wife, Dorothy. The Heritage Singerssang “The Soldiers Song and The StarSpangled Banner while the Ir<strong>is</strong>h <strong>Music</strong>Academy provided traditional musicfor the occasion.
