Focus on <strong>Telfed</strong>after years of sterling service volunteeringin the <strong>Telfed</strong> office. “On behalf ofthe <strong>Telfed</strong> family, we thank them for theirwonderful contribution to our activities,”says <strong>Telfed</strong> Director Sidney Shapiro.At an 86th birthday party held for Simonat <strong>Telfed</strong>, he spoke to <strong>Telfed</strong> Magazineabout volunteering on Machal in 1948.“When the war broke out, my brother<strong>and</strong> I joined the Hebrew Legion inJohannesburg. going to Bachar’s Farmfor training on weekends.”Then the day came to leave. “Our planestopped for four days in the Sudan where weslept on a boat berthed on the Nile. Beinga Moslem country, we had to be alert. Ifthey discovered we were Jews on the wayto Israel they would likely have attackedus. At night, we had other concerns - mosquitoes!Not sure which was worse.”After l<strong>and</strong>ing at a strip “somewhere inthe north of Israel, we were taken toa training camp.” Simon joined the 72Battalion, 7th brigade where he saw actionin the Northern Galilee, “where some ofour boys were killed.” Simon returnedto South Africa <strong>and</strong> made aliya with hiswife <strong>and</strong> three children in 1971.<strong>Telfed</strong> pays respects toMendel KaplanVice-Chairman Dave Bloom represented<strong>Telfed</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Southern African communityat Mendel Kaplan‘s funeral inCape Town last November. Bloom wasone of many who flew in from abroadto pay their respects. “The funeral <strong>and</strong>eulogies reflected Mendel’s larger thanlife personality.”Whilst in Cape Town, Bloom met withJewish communal leaders. At a meetingof the Western Province Zionist Councilwith the Director of the Jewish Agency,Moshe Vigdor, a wide range of subjectswere discussed including the ramificationsof the Goldstone report, groupaliya-flights, <strong>and</strong> the threat of legal actionagainst South Africans serving inthe IDF (See Cover Story).<strong>Telfed</strong> Youth Food ProjectIf you are a teenager <strong>and</strong> would like tostart your own grocery collection projectto help families in need of groceries, <strong>Telfed</strong>is running training sessions in Ra’anana.This programme is suitable for studentsin high school as part of their volunteercommunity services. Instructions are givenin simple English. Initiated by <strong>Telfed</strong>,Lev Lara’ev is a non-profit organizationdedicated to collecting groceries for theneedy.
