University of the Third Age (U3A)<br />

The U3A is a worldwide educational movement for older people and there are many<br />

programs for the Manly and Peninsula area. These include history, language, drawing,<br />

painting and discussion groups. U3A would like to offer the following events as ‘open<br />

sessions’ for <strong>Seniors</strong> <strong>Week</strong> <strong>2010</strong>. All three leaders are delighted to have this opportunity<br />

to present a ‘showcase’ of what Manly and Peninsula U3A is about.<br />

An overview of science<br />

This is part of a series of lectures and discussions on a wide range of scientific topics by<br />

guest speakers.<br />

Contemporary Issues<br />

A forum for the discussion of questions of public interest. The course encourages active<br />

participation from all members of the group and each attendee is asked to select a topic of<br />

general interest for discussion.<br />

The Golden Age of Cinema<br />

The film to be shown is “Ninotchka” with Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. It is a delightful<br />

comedy set in Paris before WW2, written by Billy Wilder & Charles Brackett and directed by<br />

Ernst Lubitsch. Publicity at the time of its release in 1939 cried out – “Garbo Laughs” – and<br />

so did the audiences!<br />
