4 Mayoral Message Seniors Week in Pittwater I’d like to welcome you to another exciting celebration of Seniors Week in Pittwater and hope that you enjoy participating in the many and varied free events that are on offer. During the last 12 months the three northern beaches councils have produced a free guide for local residents in collaboration with the New Choices for Retirement organisation. The guide provides comprehensive information on services, leisure groups and facilities available for older residents. We have also updated the Retirement Housing Guide, which provides information on the accommodation options available to retirees over the age of 55 and suggests various publications and agencies that can assist. The 2010 Seniors and Care Guide and the Retirement Housing Guide 2010/2011 are both available freeof-charge from Council’s customer service centres, libraries and community centres so I encourage you to get your copy and explore the many options available. Pittwater Council has continued to work with other local councils and services in implementing the Manly Warringah Pittwater Isolation Strategy. A key initiative has been the development of the Neighbour Flyer, a resource that encourages community members to connect with an elderly neighbour through simple things such as having a chat, taking out the rubbish or collecting the mail. It also offers suggestions on how you can assist your neighbour if you are concerned about them, giving them information about services which may be available to them in their home. The flyer was advertised through local press, with the rates notices, and at Council’s Customer Service Centres and Community Centres. The main aim of the flyer is to continue to raise awareness in the community about social isolation and ensure that people who are isolated are linked to the support networks they need. Pittwater has a lot to offer older residents and connecting with local groups and services is a great way to receive additional support and get to know others in the community. The theme for NSW Seniors Week in 2010 is “Live Life” - and what better way to celebrate than by attending one or more of the events being run in your local area.
Mayoral Message Pittwater Council is supporting many local events during Seniors Week in March. Our libraries and community centres are hosting open days, information sessions, demonstrations and other free activities. The Coastal Environment Centre will be exploring the Warriewood Wetlands by boardwalk, leading a history walk as part of the regular monthly walks organised by Northern Beaches Creative Leisure and Learning. Key seniors groups like Avalon Active Seniors and Narrabeen Seniors are running their usual activities and offering them free for people to try during Seniors Week. Other groups are offering everything from computer courses to yoga, from woodturning to historical talks, and from sailing to movies! I’m sure you’ll get a warm welcome at any of these events.
