Establishing a Water Resource Management Policy<br />

Sustainable water supply and water source preservation has become an important priority among all electronics companies including <strong>Samsung</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong>.<br />

Responding to growing industry needs, international business organizations for CSR including the EICC and WBCSD have created corporate<br />

water resource management guidelines.<br />

Recognizing the growing importance of global water resource management, <strong>Samsung</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong> has established water policies with a focus on enhanced<br />

stakeholder communication and minimization of management risk.<br />

Minimizing Water Management Risk<br />

<strong>Samsung</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong> set a 3% water use reduction target per production unit by 2015. We then collected water use data to identify plants with the highest<br />

water use, established a monitoring structure, identifi ed reduction measures, and implemented cost effective measures to minimize business risks<br />

associated with water use and environmental impact.<br />

Semiconductor production is a core business of <strong>Samsung</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong>, which is exposed to signifi cant business risks associated with water shortages.<br />

Recognizing its risk, we have analyzed water risk and developed redundant water supplies as well as an emergency response system to avoid any negative<br />

impact upon business. We also understand water risk as a serious global issue and are expanding monitoring efforts to collect data from our operations<br />

and verifying the reliability of effi cient water consumption.<br />

<strong>Samsung</strong> <strong>Electronics</strong> is establishing a comprehensive water management system which reduces the cost and pressure on water resources by promot-<br />

corporate citizen of global community.<br />

Strive to minimize water risk impact by our business activities.<br />

Analyze the impacts of our products, production activities and services make on water resources and<br />

minimize risks by identifying and implementing new technologies.<br />

Instill an awareness of the importance of water resources as a part of our corporate culture.<br />

Integrate the importance of water resource protection and sustainability management into the<br />

corporate culture and ensure responsible water resource management by employees with the highest<br />

consideration for the impact on local communities and the environment.<br />

Proactively cooperate with public water policies.<br />

Proactively contribute to the establishment and implementation of water resource management policies<br />

by international institutes, the government and local authorities in line with relevant guidelines.<br />

Disclose company policies and activities on water resource management.<br />

Disclose company’s policies and activities related to water resource use to stakeholders including local<br />

communities in a transparent manner.
