New, effective handling system with straddle carriers A completely new handling system is to be tested and assessed at the Port. Five used straddle carriers have been bought from Bremerhaven for the purpose. Using these trucks, handling of containers can hopefully be rationalised considerably. ”The purchase of the straddle carriers enable us to study their use as part of the continuing process of developing the port,” says Bengt Niklasson, Technical Manager at the Port. ”We are ensuring that the Port of Helsingborg will continue to be the customers’ natural choice. Rational container handling is one of our concepts for success.” 250 per cent better! One great advantage of handling containers with straddle carriers is that the containers can be placed more closely, providing more space in a given area. The containers are placed in rows, forming a passage one-anda-half metres wide between the rows. The width is currently much greater. This means in theory that we can increase our storage capacity by 250 per cent. Compared to reach stackers, straddle carriers do not need the same turning radius and therefore do not need as much space to do their job. In addition, the lifting height makes it possible to lift a container over three stacked containers, i.e. a total of four containers high. Good value trucks ”When we got the chance to buy five trucks at a price of less than what half a new truck costs, we took it of cour- 8 se,” says Bengt Niklasson. ”We acted fast and placed an order before anyone else had the time to react. The trucks are of the Noell make and were supplied with newly renovated engines. One reason for the very good price is that no direct aftermarket exists as most ports buy in new trucks.” Training for Port truck drivers The straddle carriers were sent by barge from Bremerhaven and arrived at the Port of Helsingborg in December. Before delivery was made, a group of Port staff went to Bremerhaven for training and test driving. To be able to drive operatively, 6 - 8 weeks’ training per driver is required. ’Hamlet’ sails for Elsinore.
