16The so-called New Text (j<strong>in</strong>wen ) scholars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Han period sought <strong>in</strong>particular to identify correspondences between <strong>the</strong> various features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural world(both physical <strong>and</strong> metaphysical) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> hexagrams, trigrams <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Changes. These correspondences <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong>volved numerical correlations, s<strong>in</strong>ce—as with<strong>the</strong> Pythagoreans <strong>in</strong> ancient Greece—numbers provided cosmologically <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed<strong>in</strong>dividuals with a systematic explanation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe <strong>and</strong> its movements. Theyprovided a way <strong>of</strong> “domesticat<strong>in</strong>g” nature, <strong>of</strong> submitt<strong>in</strong>g it to <strong>the</strong> premodern equivalent <strong>of</strong>equations. From a practical st<strong>and</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t, an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> numbers enabled humanbe<strong>in</strong>gs to determ<strong>in</strong>e how best to situate <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> a harmonious relationship with<strong>the</strong>ir environment.Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Great Commentary, when numbers are comb<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> various ways, <strong>the</strong>y“exhaust all aspects <strong>of</strong> change;” thus, a mastery <strong>of</strong> numbers enables one “to know <strong>the</strong>future.” For this reason, a significant amount <strong>of</strong> this commentary is devoted to variousnumerological discussions. For <strong>in</strong>stance, we are told that <strong>the</strong> numbers <strong>of</strong> Heaven are one,three, five, seven <strong>and</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e (all yang numbers) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> numbers <strong>of</strong> Earth are two, four, sixeight <strong>and</strong> ten (all y<strong>in</strong> numbers). The sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five Heavenly numbers is twenty-five <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five Earthly numbers is thirty; toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y come to fifty-five. The GreatCommentary also describes <strong>in</strong> detail a method <strong>for</strong> div<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with fifty milfoil stalks that<strong>in</strong>volves divid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stalks <strong>in</strong>to numerical groups that symbolize y<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> yang (two),Heaven, Earth <strong>and</strong> Man (three) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> seasons (four). It is easy enough to imag<strong>in</strong>e how<strong>the</strong>se numbers, both alone <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation, came to be correlated with all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong>phenomena, from musical notes <strong>and</strong> heavenly bodies to divisions <strong>of</strong> time <strong>and</strong> space. Suchcorrelations revealed cosmic connections—spiritual resonances that existed between liketh<strong>in</strong>gs. As such, <strong>the</strong>y expla<strong>in</strong>ed how <strong>the</strong> universe operated <strong>and</strong>, more importantly, how itcould be manipulated.New Text scholarship marked <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> what would become known as <strong>the</strong> School<strong>of</strong> Images <strong>and</strong> Numbers (xiangshu ), <strong>in</strong> contrast to what became known as <strong>the</strong>School <strong>of</strong> Mean<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples (yili ). The <strong>for</strong>mer school emphasizedma<strong>the</strong>matical calculations <strong>and</strong> correlations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sort described above; <strong>the</strong> latter wasmore closely associated with so-called Old Text (guwen ) sources, <strong>and</strong> its exponentspaid primary attention to what <strong>the</strong>y saw as <strong>the</strong> “moral” content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judgments, l<strong>in</strong>estatements <strong>and</strong> commentaries to <strong>the</strong> Changes.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>fluential early <strong>in</strong>terpreters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yij<strong>in</strong>g was J<strong>in</strong>g Fang (; 77-37BCE). Known primarily as a div<strong>in</strong>ation specialist, but also identified as an exponent <strong>of</strong>New Text scholarship <strong>and</strong> an advocate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Images <strong>and</strong> Numbers approach to <strong>the</strong>Changes, he has been credited with <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong>/or populariz<strong>in</strong>g several calendricallybased schemes <strong>for</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g phases <strong>of</strong> change with markers <strong>of</strong> time. These systems<strong>in</strong>volved correlations between y<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> yang, <strong>the</strong> five agents, <strong>the</strong> eight trigrams <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>sixty-four hexagrams on <strong>the</strong> one h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> units <strong>of</strong> space <strong>and</strong>/or time associated with <strong>the</strong>ten heavenly stems <strong>and</strong> twelve earthly branches (operat<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dividually or <strong>in</strong>comb<strong>in</strong>ation), <strong>the</strong> twenty-four segments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> solar year <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> twenty-eight lunarlodges on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.
