ATHLETICS·SPEECH·WINTER GUARDErick Gavin ’10 repeats as theIHSA Men’s 110 meter High Hurdles State Champion.Julian Childers ’12 placed 9th in IHSAState Tennis Singles competition.Erick Gavin joined some elite company on May 29 whenhis effort of 13.90 earned him a second straight IHSA statechampionship in the 110-meter hurdles in the State Trackand Field meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.The winning mark also set a school record in the event forGavin, who will continue his career at the University ofMichigan. Ironically, the only other Marian Spartan to winmultiple state titles also became a Wolverine. Casey Taylor ’05won the IHSA women’s triple jump state championship in 2003,2004 and 2005.Overall, Marian Catholic has captured ten individual IHSAstate titles in athletics.Men’s tennis continues to climb the ladder toward the state’selite, as the Spartans posted their highest state tournamentfinish since 1980 with 12 points and an 18th place statefinish this year.Sophomore Julian Childers led the way with five victoriesat the state tournament for a 9th place individual finishin singles, as he followed up East Suburban CatholicConference and IHSA Sectional titles. Senior D.J. Rogalateamed with sophomore Mitch Zavesky for a 3-2 doublesrecord at the state tournament.With several key members returning, Marian will try tobuild on the most successful two-year dual meet record inschool history (45-5).Youth was served in women’ track and field, where a pairof Spartan underclassmen qualified for the IHSA Statemeet. Freshman Imani Haynes earned 12th place in thestate in the 110-meter high hurdles, while sophomore PaigeCrawford was 27th in the state in the 400-meter dash.Marian also captured third place in the ESCC meet, with apair of relays setting conference meet records.MARIAN CATHOLIC GROUP INTERPRETATIONEARNS STATE TITLEState Champion Group Interpretation members areJaboukie Young-White, Adam King, Conor Keane,Kyle Fitzgerald, seated. Imbued with religious stereotypes, “Protestants Cry, Too” alsoportrays a family’s change of heart once their stern and ultra-religious father softenshis view.Marian Forensics Director Mark Donaway is proud of the team’saccomplishments.“With a multi-cultural cast, the students embraced the story to perfection,”he stated.6

Having won 1st place in theScholastic Open Class in 2009, the Marian Guard was promoted toWorld Class this year with the hopes of making it into the finals of15 teams from among 25 teams competing. By capturing 5th placeoverall, the Marian Guard made history as they placed higher in theirfirst year than any other newly promoted team.The guard’s show is titled “Ashes to Ashes.”Guard members, dressed for a funeral, deal with overwhelminggrief felt at the loss of a loved one with “Ashes to Ashes.” As agravedigger fills a freshly dug grave with shovelfuls of dirt from awheelbarrow, a sobbing widow holding a black umbrella is escortedthrough the scene as she tries to manage her sadness. When shecollapses at the graveside, unable to bear her loss, a close friendpicks her up and consoles her, holding her as they slowly exitthe floor. The performance has an undeniably somber theme,but the capacity crowd in Dayton was moved by their portrayal,responding with a standing ovation.Fieldandfloor.com ranked Marian Catholic among the top four intheir review of all the performances in Dayton, high school teamsand independent teams included, saying, “This was the kind ofcolor guard production and masterful performance that reshapesperceptions and futures.”“Welcome to YOUR Alumni Association” is at thecenter of a new effort to engage more alumni affiliationto MCHS through the Alumni Association. Althougheveryone who graduated from Marian Catholic isautomatically a member of the organization, now is thetime to connect our alumni with the association.The Alumni Association will become a centerpiece of ourAlumni Relations program. It will concentrate on socialfunctions for alumni as well as offering an establishednetwork and opportunities to connect with the schoolboth locally and from a distance.Promotion of the MCHS Alumni Association will kickoffat the Homecoming Alumni Gathering on Friday,Sept. 24 in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. LeadershipCenter after the homecoming game against Notre Dame.With more time and planning, a general meeting of theMarian Catholic Alumni Association will be held inOctober 2010.Serviced by the Alumni Relations office, the group will be“powered” by Alumni Representatives who will serve as abridge between Marian Catholic and alumni. Graduatingclasses, and affinity groups (band, athletics, fine arts,etc.) will be another “go to” resource among the classor group, serving as the communication link betweenthe school, the Alumni Association, and promoting themission among a vibrant community.The Association invites national as well as local membersto become part of the network of representatives.
