TREND 1: DIGITAL–PHYSICAL BLURhundreds of sensors working inside its planes. The toolswill allow Etihad to monitor planes in real time, reducefuel costs, manage plane maintenance, and even spotproblems before they happen. 17Enabling many of these advances is the concept thatdata can be acquired, analyzed, and acted upon in realtime. The underlying concept is hardly novel: it applied tothe earliest anti-lock brake systems on cars, and it’s trueof many more complex systems today. The difference,however, is that today’s digital-physical systems oftenhave orders of magnitude more data to help make moreinformed decisions within a window of opportunitythat matters.This “iteration capital” is a force multiplier at Ford Motor,where 3-D printers radically reduce iteration cycles inthe design process, saving an average of one month ofproduction time for new engine parts, for instance. 18 Atmotorcycle maker Ducati, design cycle time has beenhalved by leveraging 3-D printing. 19 And the U.S. Armyis experimenting with 3-D printers to eliminate the needto carry so many spare parts. The precision enabled bytoday’s additive manufacturing technologies is leveragedby GE to make parts that were simply not possible withprevious manufacturing technologies. 20 In all of theseexamples, companies are pushing decisions to the edgein ways that were never before possible.The entire transportation ecosystem is ripe for disruptionby digital-physical systems. When driverless carsbecome common, not only will they change commuters’experiences, they are expected to reduce the incidenceof traffic accidents, improve the density of road use,smooth subsequent planning for maintenance and newroad construction, ease long-term planning for othertransportation systems such as light rail, and muchmore. Overall, driverless cars will radically disrupt theshipping and logistics industries, fleet services, publictransportation, taxicabs, rental cars, agriculture, andmining industries. What’s more, insurance liabilitymarkets will likely undergo dramatic changes as carmanufacturers move to self-insure, offsetting theirdistributed risk via reinsurance markets.In case there is any doubt that such technologies arein our future, public policy—often the biggest laggardin innovation economies—is keeping pace.
