TREND 2: FROM WORKFORCE TO CROWDSOURCEFast-tracking productdevelopmentThe open-source community is the original expandedworkforce—the trailblazers, united by ideas and interests, who helped write the rules and define the tools forfreeform ways of developing software. Collectively, these impassioned individuals make up a global armyof developers who are creating and improving freesoftware, bringing worldwide benefits server by server, device by device, for free. This expanded workforce has touched every organizationin some way. Witness the widespread use of two outputsof open-source projects: Hadoop and Linux. The first isthe engine that is powering the Big Data era; the secondis the kernel operating system embedded in 23 percentof installed enterprise servers, over 80 percent ofsmartphones shipped, and countless other systemsranging from embedded sensors to supercomputers. 9It can be argued that the open-source movement haschanged the face of software development just as muchas the move from punch cards to hard disks did. Opensourceinitiatives are foundational for companies suchas Yahoo and Google. Android is based on Linux; it isprojected to constitute nearly half of all mobile operatingsystems (smartphones and tablets) by 2017. 10Nowadays, the largest technology players all havesignificant roles in open-source development. Companiesincluding IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle—once stronglyopposed to all things open-source—are official, vital, and prolific contributors to the open-source community. The open-source paradigm has now moved to hardwaredevelopment, as seen with Facebook’s Open ComputeProject and Hewlett-Packard’s Pathfinder InnovationEcosystem Solutions initiatives. But it shouldn’t belimited to just tech companies. Businesses of all kindsshould engage in these open-source communities. Bycontributing ideas, time, and code, companies help setthe overall direction of product development, allowingthem to leverage not just software that is free butsoftware that targets their specific needs and problems.Software is also just one example of using the expandedworkforce for product development. From smart watchesto smart vehicles, the expanded workforce is beingemployed by bold companies to energize their product37ACCENTURE TECHNOLOGY VISION 2014
