Honouring Cav. Luigi Gambin1946-2010A Son’s EulogyThank you all for your presence here today. It is a great testament to the number of lives my father, Luigi Gambin, connectedwith across nations and across communities, that we are all assembled in this momenttogether to honor his next amazing journey into the mystery. Through myfather, I, Leonardo, have also had the opportunity to have gotten to know manyof you, and for that I am grateful. Luigi Gambin was always an ardent cultivatorand maintainer of family and social associations. He was the original Facebook, when you actually had to show your face and sign the book.He traveled extensively throughout his rich and fruitful life, but most of his travelingwas done to revisit his home country, or to visit the homes of friends and familyin neighborhoods both near and far. He was very proud of his original NorthernItalian culture, and made a tremendous impact in trumpeting its merits throughouthis adopted Canadian land using the power of his resonant baritone voice. With a tenacious Friulan work ethic, and his hands to the wheel, Luigi Gambinspent his entire adult life laboring admirably to create his paradise here inToronto, and though we are all saddened and upset that he was not able to reapthe fruits of his earthly eden for as long as he had hoped to, let us take solacein the idea that the paradise that is possible in other dimensions is greater stillthan the one that we are able to inhabit here.May Luigi Gambin's brave body rest in peace as his soul now adventures throughoutthe universe, and may we be blessed with the enduring warmth of his smile asthe wonderful memories of his life continue to project strongly inside the mindsand hearts of us all.Leonard GambinIn the face of tragedy, words often feel inadequate. But words are the tools with which we attempt to communicateour most complicated feelings. We were incrediblymoved to hear the many beautiful words thatcelebrated my father's life as his body was ceremoniallylaid to rest. Those words gave us both comfort andinspiration as we all proceed bravely into the eramarked by Luigi Gambin's absence. We'd like to sharea few more words to express our gratitude to all whowere involved in his mass, burial, and remembrance. The outpouring of affection and admiration for our fatherwas extraordinary. We have always been impressedwith the admirable qualities of the Furlancommunity as represented by The Famee Furlane, andduring the last week of October, we experienced thebest of everyone that calls the Famee their own. Thankyou all for your stellar send off of a great man. LuigiGambin would certainly have been proud to witnesshis community coming together with such integrityand strength.Mandi Gigi Gambin, you will be missed.Con amore, Leonardo and Lawrence Gambin........................................................................I would like to take this opportunity to thankeveryone and especially all the women that assistedin the care of my uncle. Of particular note, a groupof three whom I have dubbed G3 or the GambinGirls - Edda, Vicki, and Vanda; Oretta; and my sisterin-lawIvana. I used to tease him that having all thesewomen touch him, helped him heal. He didn't havethe strength to speak much by then, but the smilewas from ear to ear. A great big thank you to all otherswho supported his love of food during his stay! Two prominent men in my life also deserve a specialthanks. First, my boss Jamie, who allowed me asmuch time as necessary to care for my uncle. If onlyeveryone could work for such a man. Secondly andmost dear to my heart, my husband Anthony. He hasdevoted much of his time to do things for my unclethat no average man would do. Edda has a crush onhim now. Anthony and Barbe were buds and provedthat's what friends are for. I will be forever gratefulto you Anthony. My uncle and I had a very special and close relationshipthat began when I was little, having reminded mewhile in the hospital, that he took me to the exhibitionat a young age. I remember doing some clothesshopping with him as a preteen, and folks just couldn'tfigure out our relationship which always made ussmirk….let them guess!Of course, as we both grew older, the excursionschanged, but we always visited and enjoyed jawingabout all topics with a good single malt in hand andsometimes a cigar too! And on a few occasions of late,I wasn't afraid to give him a piece of my mind when Ifelt it was needed. Keep in mind, that I'm about 11inches shorter than he, a woman, and his niece; that'sthree strikes against me when shaking my finger up athim in my quasi soprano voice during my heated rant.He would look down at me once I finished, and in hisusual even-tempered baritone voice, would simply sayViiiiirrrrna. I felt better having gotten my message offmy chest and he just smiled. Brat! We laughed, cried, and talked lots during his stay in the hospital. Despitethe situation, it was a treasured time. I had no ideathat Mr. Luigi Gambin was a man involved in so manyventures, involving a vast network of people and wasso loved and respected. To me he was and always willbe just my Barbe Gigi whom I miss deeply.Verna Zanardo........................................................................As Luigi's first cousins, we knew him well.We lived next door to each other in Italy and Vickywas his designated babysitter. She has many memoriesof those days, but one incident stands out inher mind. As she was taking Gigi for a walk in ourbeautiful stone sidewalks of Codroipo, he fell, hit astone and knocked out his front tooth.Gigi was so small and skinny that everyone calledhim "GIGIUTTI", translated from our Friulan Dialect,it means Little Luigi. We would never have guessedthat Little Luigi would one day be 6' 3" tall.As an immigrant in 1966, at the age of 19, he came toCanada prepared with the basic knowledge of theEnglish Language, as well as being a licensed electrician. Not too long ago, Gigi was reminiscing with us aboutthe time he first arrived in Canada. We visited him afew days after his arrival, and brought him a cartonof cigarettes. His comments were "up to now I couldonly afford to buy one cigarette at a time."Gigi always remembered his humble roots. We have fond memories of 2 cruises that we travelledtogether where we enjoyed each other's companyand had many good laughs. And so Gigiutti, we will miss you immensely, and thethree of us want to thank you for making us veryproud that we are GAMBINS.Edda Picco, Vicki Guerra and Vanda Lovisotto........................................................................Anyone can be on their best behaviour for a shortperiod of time under favourable conditions, but youreally don't know a person until you see them undergood, bad and ordinary circumstances. I am proudto say that I have been Luigi's business partner for33 years, which I believe qualifies me as an experton Luigi Gambin. When Luigi and I started business, we were both kidsand really didn't know each other very well. However,we were young and had nothing really to lose so weboth took a chance in starting a business together.Over time I discovered that Luigi was a man of manydifferent personalities. When there was work to do,he could not be distracted until the task was completed. In this respect, Luigi supervised several majorconstruction projects. Each had their own uniqueproblems that required a special touch, sometimesfirm, sometimes soft. Luigi always seemed to knowthe right amount of pressure to apply. I can't recall asingle situation when a problem got the best ofLuigi. He never gave up.Another side of Luigi was his great love of life and itspleasures. He loved to party and he always had timeto share good food, good scotch and good conversationwith friends. His face would light up and you couldfeel his enjoyment when he recounted, in vivid detail, stories of time spent with friends, hunting, fishing, travellingor just sharing a meal.Another of Luigi's qualities was his flexibility. When thesituation required it, Luigi could be extremely muleheaded and difficult. Yet, he was open minded andagreeable if he thought it was warranted. Sometimes, you never knew what to expect. But the attributes thatI will remember and cherish the most were his senseof honour, his honesty and his loyalty. Throughout ourthirty-three years in business together, Luigi and Inever had a written partnership agreement. It was notnecessary due to the great trust we had in each other.Luigi and I built and managed a very successful RealEstate Development Company resulting in financial securityand freedom but you would never know it speakingto Luigi. The old cliché fit Luigi perfectly. He couldwalk with Kings-but did not lose the common touch.I will miss him greatly.Ray Di Battista, Luigi's Business Partner and Friend........................................................................Luigi had asked me to be responsible for safetyon the Blue Meadow site in Brampton. The jokebeing that I was the most accident prone individualin the country at the time. However armed with mynew found authority, I diligently requested that allpeople on the site wear safety boots and hard hats.3

A smile that engulfed the room, a presence thattouched everyone, a spirit that was effervescent. Thoseare just a few of my memories of Luigi Gambin. He wasproud of his family, his friends, his community, his country, and his heritage. And he gave unselfishly to all ofthose. His pride was not of arrogance or conceit but ofgrace and gratitude for Sergina, his parents, his family,as well as the opportunities that he transferred into success. He was both a leader and a servant and his manycontributions will endure to remind all of us how fortunatewe have been to know him and also for future generationsto appreciate what a great and good man hewas. Rest peacefully, my friend. The Honourable Frank Iacobucci, C.C., Q.C.........................................................................What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness,a longing for one more day, one more word, one moretouch, we may not understand why Luigi left this earthso soon, or why he left before we were ready to saygood-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember notjust that he died, but that Luigi lived. And that his lifegave us memories too beautiful to forget.I count myself fortunate to have known Luigi and I wastruly inspired by his leadership and words of wisdom.Somehow, I can’t help but believe that Luigi has goneand will pave a better way for us.We will miss you my good friend! In God We TrustSincerely Jerry Buligan........................................................................From evenings spent at the Famee making upcomingevents as successful as possible, to finding ways to encourageon-going community engagement and supportfor the Famee and the Friuli campus, I will always rememberyour unwavering dedication to causes thatneeded both financial support and a good dose ofhuman kindness. You are Furlan to the core and the nonplus-ultraof what the Furlan community has done to berecognized in this country as well as the one we left behind.Together with my family, and the many friends andcolleagues that have been blessed to know you as aleader, to work along side you as a colleague, and others, like me, who knew you as a loyal, dedicated and supportivefriend...Mandi. We will never forget!Gianni Ceschia........................................................................Now we have to bid good bye to a good friend. Ihave been privileged to have known Luigi for over 30years.Luigi participated in our annual Feast of St. Anthony, atHoly Angels Church, singing with the Coro of Santa Cecilia. And I have live pictures in my mind of Luigi, greetingthe guests crossing the ship’s gang plank at the Pier21 “Welcome to Canada” events, and also Luigi beingthe symbolic Canada immigration officer stamping thePier 21 Festa Souvenir passports as if the people werearriving to Canada via Pier 21.I will always remember you. I will miss you. Rest in peace myfriend.Mandi Mandi GigiYour friend, Ralph Chiodo........................................................................Luigi inspired and enriched all who came in contactwith him. What a bond he created between people. This kind, gentle, humble man was very generous andgave freely of himself to help others. His imposing physicalpresence was no match for his large heart as he embracedall challenges with selflessness, determinationand great courage.Luigi, a class act in every way, - philanthropist, orator anda great leader of people. I have had the great privilegeof knowing you and will never forget you.Rose Simone........................................................................have known Gigi since 1978 when the Santa Cecilia choirmade their home at the Famee Furlane. For the past 32years, we worked together in organizing many cultural events, picnics, golf tournaments, banquets and social activities.Gigi was a member of the Famee Furlane Board, VicePresident and President of the Famee Furlane. Duringthis time, we built the Friuli Terrace Senior Apartmentand the Villa Leonardo Gambin Long-Term Care Facility. At all meetings, Gigi always made positive leadershipcontributions. Together we went through wonderful andchallenging times at the Famee in order to achieve thebest for all members. Gigi put together a hard workingand dedicated committee to build the Villa LeonardoGambin Long-Term Care Facility. In my eyes, Gigi wasa solid and compassionate leader in our community. We also are saddened by the sudden loss of his wifeSergina. She was always supportive of Gigi’s activities. On behalf of the board, staff, volunteers and residents ofFriuli Terrace, Gigi and Sergina may you rest in peace.Mandi,Armand Scaini, Friuli Terrace President........................................................................The first thing you would notice is his size. It wouldhave been easy to be intimidated had it not been forhis smile, the twinkle in his eye. I had the honour ofworking with Luigi Gambin from 2001 to 2008, first onthe committee for the Friuli Long Term Care, and thenon the Famee Furlane Board. He was both leader andteam player. He was as comfortable speaking to acrowd of 500 people as he was sitting at a table talkingwith you and sharing a glass of wine. He is sadly missed, but we are inspired to carry on with the goals anddreams we shared.Angela Bosa Slokar........................................................................A gentle giant of a man who’s devotion to his family, friends and Furlan Community made him a true inspirationto all those who knew him. Gigi devoted numerous hoursto his many interests, The Santa Cecilia Choir, Opera York,The Friuli Campus, just to name a few. He gave of his timeto all, always supportive and never judgmental.Gigi our hearts are heavy with your loss; although youare no longer with us, you will never be forgotten....MandiGigi.Mary Francescutti, Director, Friuli Benevolent........................................................................A smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes – This ishow I will remember Gigi Gambin. His unpretentious natureput those around him at ease. Although his physicalstature and position as President could have allowed Gigito stand above us, he chose to make his place workingbeside us. At the Famee Picnics and the Golf tournaments,he donned his apron and got to work at the grillor stove. After the job was done, he always rememberedto acknowledge the work of the volunteers. It was thesesimple words of thanks and his willingness to roll up hissleeves that inspired me to become involved with theFamee Furlane once again. His pride in our heritage andthe accomplishments of the Furlan community was infectious. He loved to travel and even before one of thegroup trips was over, he was planning the next. I will treasurethe time we spent on our trips to Alaska and Europeand am ever grateful to Gigi and Sergina for sharing theseadventures with me.Mara Querin........................................................................My Dad, Renzo had always been a part of the Famee. As his “honourary son”, he wanted me to become involved. As a tribute to him, when I was asked to join theBoard of the Famee, I said yes. I was elected and in lateJuly of 2002, I attended my first Board meeting, chairedwith respect – and restraint – by Gigi. Imagine my surprisewhen the Board brought in a birthday cake for mybirthday on July 31st! Then I found out that Gigi’s birthdaywas also on that date! Even though the cake was forGigi, I always appreciated the wonderful reception.Gigi continued to provide that warm reception at all themeetings of the Famee I attended as a Board memberand during all work we did together while I was on thatBoard. After I changed to the Board of Friuli Benevolent,we continued our work and even though we had someheated discussions over the years, I never felt that he hadanything but the best interests of the Famee and Furlansat heart.Gigi was a smart, funny, gentleman.Oh yeah, he also barbecued like an angel!Rest in Peace Gigi. You will be missed.Marisa Zanini........................................................................5

We share the Famee’s senseof loss in Luigi’s passing. With love, Opera York........................................................................Il Presidente Cav. Pietro Girardi........................................................................Luigi Gambin can best be described as a “ProudFriulan”. As President, of the Famee Friulane, heworked tirelessly, to fundraise and to motivate othersto become involved, with Villa Gambin. “Gigi” wasa good friend and will be missed by all!In death, as in life, Gigi and Sergina will walk, sideby side for eternity.May God Bless!Mario Querin and Members of Club Villottese........................................................................In fond memory of our dear friend, Luigi Gambin,President of the Famee Furlane Toronto. He was akind hearted and generous person, always with asmile. He understood the importance of keepingalive the Friulian traditions. It was an honour to haveknown him. He will always be remembered in ourthoughts and prayers.Mandi Gigi.Anita Sabucco, President, Societa FemminileFriulana Toronto........................................................................Per noi Cordovadesi, Luigi Gambin era sì: il Presidentedella Famee Furlane, ma era sopratutto unamico e gli amici come lui non si dimenticano.Esterina Toneguzzo Presidente Social ClubCordovado........................................................................The friendship between Luigi Gambin and OperaYork began with the booking of the Coro Santa Ceciliafor “Opera under the Stars” at Fundale Park in1997. This concert was part of the Vaughan SummerConcerts in the Parks Series. The concert was hit! Toour excitement it created a traffic jam that blockedtraffic on Islington for 20 minutes. After a few moreconcerts and a production, Lu joined Opera York asa director and also began the partnership withOpera York and Famee Furlane .10
