Christmas Message from the Famee Furlane Toronto 

Once again it is the season to reflect 

on the year behind us and to look 

into the future. With next year bringing 

the 80th anniversary of our founding, 

there is a particular resonance to the 

expression: “one must know their 

history to find their future.” Our 

Famee is the product of our cultural 

identity and the personal commitment 

by the membership. This rich 

history is the true bedrock of the Famee Furlane. We celebrate 

this proud history and use its teaching to guide us into the future. 

In November of this year, the Coro Santa Cecilia celebrated a 

remarkable milestone of a fifty year anniversary. A banquet concert 

feted Furlan culture in glorious celebration with performance of 

the Coro, Voce di Friuli, and the Ballerins. These cultural traditions 

are true markers of our identity inspiring the entire membership. 

The year 2011 was characterized by much change including the 

not so subtle interest being generated by the youth within our 

community to become involved, be recognized and have a 

voice. Singularly the trend may not be easily recognizable but as 

a whole it has gathered force as evidenced by the multiple 

initiatives directed at and by the youth of our community. 

In October, the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia held the North 

American Youth Congress, with the collaboration of Ente Friuli 

nel Mondo, EFASCE, ERAPLE, Associazione Giuliani nel Mondo 

and others, hosted a successful North American Furlan Youth 

Conference. The participants came to Toronto participating in 

numerous workshops directed the Furlan cultural identity and its

residents, volunteers and staff, I would

The recent renovation and expansion of the first floor common 

areas, officially opened this past February, has enhanced the Villa 

Leonardo Gambin long term care residence and continues our 

efforts to be “best in class”. The Charity is extremely grateful to 

the donors who have contributed to the various fundraising 

activities which have assisted in ensuring that the home has 

prospered while the residents have enjoyed the best of care and 

quality of life. It is this support that turns dreams and inspiration 

into brick and mortar and sustains our Charity. We are truly 

blessed to have the support of our community.

efforts are made to support the 

special needs of our tenants and 

guests of our day-program.

it has received over the last eleven years from Matthew Melchior. 

I would like to thank Mathew for his dedication to the Charity and 

more importantly, making the quality of life so special for our one 

hundred and sixty-eight seniors and adults with special needs. We 

will continue to support him in his new role as President of the 

Famee Furlane Toronto. 

We will not rest on our past accomplishment but always think 

about elevating and maintaining the Villa Leonardo Gambin 

residence as a “best in class” home in Canada. My goal is to 

continue to work with our Board of Directors, and the great 

caring staff and volunteers at the residence to continue the 

journey of providing a genuine home experience that exceeds 

expectations.

place today. Closer to home, Famee Furlane Toronto 

demonstrated leadership by proposing to spearhead the 2012 

Federation Conference. This initiative was advanced by our very 

own social group, comprised mainly of “younger” citizens, was 

endorsed by your Board, and approved by Fogolars Federation 

of Canada. The conference is scheduled to take place at the 

Famee Furlane Toronto Thanksgiving weekend 2012. This is a 

first time initiative for a conference of this nature to be 

spearheaded by a younger generation. The success of this 

youth conference is a testimonial of the interest today’s youth 

has in its roots and in their Friulan community. Also, the Oak Leaf 

Gala, held in October to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 

founding of Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity, has never before 

played host to such a large contingent of young guests. 

While all of these happenings are most exciting, they also bring 

the realization of the need to create an environment to encourage 

and empower the next generation to continue the proud legacy 

of our Famee. It is our responsibility to facilitate a gentle 

progression while celebrating our rich history, to listen to their 

voice while simultaneously promoting our traditions. Our role is 

to in still a sense of confidence in their community and genuine 

pride in belonging to the Famee Furlane Toronto. 

Let us embrace this Christmas season in the knowledge that we 

have so much to be grateful and so much to look forward to. 

May the spirit of the holiday season be with you, your family and 

loved ones,

Chaired by Matthew Melchior and Dawn Alexander, the 

10th Anniversary Oak Leaf Gala provided the nearly six 

hundred guests present with an exciting and unique 

experience. Guests, including many leading members of 

the Vaughan and the Greater Toronto business and 

professional communities, unanimously agreed that the 

tenth anniversary gala celebration was unprecedented in 

flair, energy and gastronomic offering. 

Not only did the celebrants thoroughly enjoy the evening, 

they were able to reflect on the accomplishments of the 

Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity over the past decade, 

knowing that they were making a positive impact in the 

health and well-being of the residents of the long term 

care residence. This year’s gala raised approximately one 

hundred and sixty thousand dollars.

PolentaFest 

The giant pot which cooked the record pounds of 

polenta.

On September 24th, 2011 the Windsor Furlan 

community entered the pages of Guinness World 

Records with the world's largest polenta officially 

weighing in at 6150 lb, easily breaking the previous 

record of 2,632 lb 5 oz set in Feltre, Belluno 

PoltentaFest, was hugely successful and was hosted 

by Fogolar Furlan Windsor. The carefully planned 

event included great food, activities for young 

and old alike and of course plenty of polenta! The 

10 ft wide " haldèrie" was formerly used for fruit 

juice and was housed in a special engineer 

designed cradle. For the record it took approximately 

4 hours for the 160 kg of burning coal to 

bring 2250 liters of water to proper boil. A number

My name is Luke 

Staniscia, a two-time 

recipient of the 

Salvador Scholarship 

and in my final year 

completing a five year 

degree program in 

Politics and Governance 

at Ryerson University. 

Throughout my years at 

Ryerson, I have played 

on the Varsity 

Basketball Team and I am currently team captain. 

It has always been a dream of mine to one 

day play professional basketball in Italy...ideally 

somewhere in Friuli. I am sending this as an 

expression of my appreciation for being awarded 

this prestigious scholarship. Being selected 

as a Salvador Scholarship recipient was integral 

in achieving my degree. I truly could not have 

been able to afford my schooling if it were not 

for the Salvador Scholarship and the Famèe 

of 10 ft oars were used as the "mèscul". What an extraordinary feat! Congratulations to all involved! 

Furlane. I would like to send a special thanks to 

Doreen Vanini and Armand Scaini who selected 

me for this scholarship and were very helpful in 

its administration. I would also like to thank my 

nonna, Ester Cancian (long time member of the 

Famèe Furlane Toronto as well as the Societa 

Femminile Friuliana) for bringing the Salvador 

Scholarship program to my attention a few 

years ago. So once again, thank you to everyone 

at the Famèe Furlane Toronto. You have 

all helped make my post-secondary education 

possible. I could not have done it without you.

Hunter’s Dream - Canada 

On January 20, 2012, The Famee Furlane, will 

organize a game night to celebrate the large 

number of our members who love the sport of 

hunting. 

Canada is a country that is rich in many 

resources, one of them is the availability of 

plentiful wild game, which provides a wonderful 

hunters’ playground. Canada is a hunter’s 

dream attracting hunters from far and wide. It 

is no surprise that many of our members are 

hunters. Some of them perhaps, learned to 

hunt from their fathers in Friuli, and have 

carried on the tradition. Others, blessed by 

the abundance of game life in Canada 

embraced the sport as adults. Whatever the 

individual circumstance, one thing that is 

common to all is their enthusiasm for the sport. 

In the fall months La Saletta is a buzz with 

Diamond Wedding Anniversary 

hunting tales that get bigger by the minute. 

There is a certain passion, determination and 

commitment when hunters drive long distances 

to a certain, “secret” location hoping to 

see a moose. However hunting in itself is only 

part of the story. Hunters look forward to a 

hunting trip not only for the adventure of the 

hunt, but as in other sports, an opportunity for 

friends to spend time together to renew 

friendship. One never knows the problems 

the group may encounter. For instance, I 

heard of the unexpected visit by a bear at the 

camp that helped himself to the week’s food 

supplies, or the time the moose got away. 

In the spirit of friendship we have organized a 

game night on Friday, January 20th, 2012, 

where we can share stories, view pictures and 

enjoy succulent food and good wine.

A way for youngsters to get acquainted with Furlan culture in a relaxed, fun way. 

Each session will include Furlan language and crafts. One-time topics are 

Furlan food, music, geography and dance.

Time: 9:30-11:30 AM

Famee Furlane Social Group 4th Annual 

Wine & Dine Event was held at al 

Fogolar on October 28th, 2011. The 

Fogolar restaurant was reserved for 52 

guests to enjoy fine culinary and wine 

servings. 

Luis Simeoni and his group did an outstanding 

job again this year. It was sold 

out early. Everyone went home having 

indulged in some outstanding wines 

and great dishes prepared by our chef 

Boris and his kitchen staff. The service 

was co-ordinated beautifully by 

Domenic and his restaurant staff.

apprezzato da tutti. 

Abbiamo trascorso una giornata fantastica con tanta allegria e tanta collaborazione da parte di tutti. 

Il 9 di novembre, il nostro gruppo ha festeggiato la Castagnata, con caldarroste ed un bon taiut. Il 14 di 

dicembre, festeggiamo il Banchetto di Natale, ricco di premi e di festa dando anche l’addio al 2011. 

Con i primi di gennaio 2012 si inizzia il rinovo delle tessere. Qesta e una buona oportunita per nuovi socci,

Congratulations And Thank You To Coro Santa Cecilia 

On November 12, 2011, Coro Santa Cecilia celebrated its 50th anniversary with a 

few hundred friends at a dinner at the Famee Furlane. The members sang a number 

of songs to reflect the work and time of each of the four directors the choir has 

had over its lifetime. 

The choir was established in 1961 under the director of Lino Springolo and named 

it for Santa Cecilia, the patron saint of singers. Over the years, three other directors 

led the choir, being Giuseppe Macina from 1970 to 1979, Daniele Colla from 1980 

to 1982 and Bruno Deotto, who took over in 1982 and leads it to this day. Bruno 

joined the choir in 1961, and eventually became its leader. He has a great love of 

music, studying formally in Italy, then continuing with self-studies over the years. 

Coro Santa Cecilia’s repertoire includes Friulian folkloric music, religious and classic 

songs, sung in its unique four voice harmony. 

Over its 50 years, the choir has performed many times for Famee members at 

concerts and special events. It has performed for other clubs at their events, 

travelling across Canada to sing at functions and congresses at many fogolars. 

Invitations came from other parts of the country. Its singing of the Perosi Mass at 

Ste Anne de Beaupre in Quebec brought about an emotional response from the 

audience. Those attending the funeral service of Senator Peter Bosa were moved 

at its singing of Aquileia. It has sung to illustrious audiences at Queen’s Park in 

front of the Premier, in Ottawa for then Prime Minister Trudeau, and even for 

Queen Elizabeth II. The choir participated in Expo ’67.

many of these trips were organized by then president Luigi Gambin. The choir 

performed in and outside of Italy, pleasing audiences wherever it went. Other 

recognition came in the form of prizes; the choir took 1st Prize in the Freedom 

Festival competition and 1st Prize at the Kiwanis Festival it entered. 

The first 25 years of the choir were documented in a book by Gianni Grohovaz (still 

available on-line). And over the years, choir members made time to produce a 

record, a cassette and a 40th anniversary CD. Many of the members have been 

with the choir from the beginning. Although it is not a professional choir, they 

take the music seriously, attending practices each week. They’ll perform next for 

Famee members and friends at the annual Arie di Natale on December 11. Coro 

Santa Cecilia has been a major part of this event since it began.

Anthony Tosoni 

Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. Anthony 

Tosoni invented the pill form for the renowned antibiotic, 

rendering its production and preservation easier. 

The great scientist from Castelnovo del Friuli, born in 

1920 in Pordenone province and deceased in 1985, 

was one of the most important figures of the Italian 

community in the GTA. In 1947, he was the first 

Italian to receive a doctorate from the University of 

Toronto, completing his PhD in biochemistry. He 

also registered several patents in his area of study 

during the early ’50s to late ’60s period. 

Famèe Furlane in Woodbridge has decided to 

honour his memory, inaugurating a bronze plaque 

at Friuli Terrace (60 Friuli Court) and dedicating a 

“conservatory” room for him. 

The celebration was held last Sunday (September 

11/11), as per the wishes of his good friend Armand 

Scaini, current president of Friuli Terrace, in the 

presence of Tosoni’s wife Marie, children Joan, Anne 

Marie, Marie, Paul, Louise, and several grandchildren. 

Also attending the event were a full contingent from 

the Knights of Columbus and Father Fitzpatrick from 

the St. Michael’s College School. 

Nino (Tosoni’s nickname, short for Anthony) emigrated 

to Canada via New York in 1920 with parents Sante

Friuli Terrace, after 

over 20 years as 

Activity Director.

Over the years, she had guided the tenants to create the 

famous Christmas Bazaar, has led them on many, many trips, 

and got them singing and dancing, among other activities. 

Holidays and special days were celebrated together. 

Tenants got involved in many charitable works, knitting 

items for babies and preparing packages of food or practical

babies and children, and hats and slippers for adults. 

On October 22 the tenants of the 

terrace were entertained by “Sot le 

Piargule” a choir, visiting from Friuli. 

The choir performed songs in Furlan, 

many of them written by the members 

themselves. Joining them was the 

mayor of their town. The last time 

this choir visited the Terrace was 22 

years ago, and the tenants were 

thrilled to have them back for another 

performance.

many other Italian families, but the young Tosoni 

demonstrated his potential by completing five years 

of high school in four. 

The family could not afford to further the education 

of such a promising child who however, won a $200 

scholarship offered by the Kinghts of Columbus and 

enrolled at St. Michael’s College. Tosoni wanted to 

study languages, but being Catholic and Italian, he 

was concerned about being able to carve out a 

career in the sector, so he chose biochemistry. He 

took on various summer jobs such as ceramic tile 

setter and newspaper saleperson. 

At the age of 21 he was elected president of Famèe 

Furlane in Toronto, as he was the following year 

(1941-1942) too. Tosoni accepted the responsibility 

items to be sent overseas or to shelters in the neighbourhood. 

There was always an activity on the go to help those 

less fortunate. 

Oretta was constantly on the lookout for fabrics, wool and 

items that would be used by tenants to create items to sell, 

or to be packed into kits for others. 

She leaves a legacy of activities, of involvement in the community, 

and memories of many good times. The Friuli 

Terrace Choir is becoming known in the neighbourhood and 

highly commended for its fine voices and pleasing sound. 

Oretta may be officially retiring but she will still be active 

around Friuli campus, volunteering her time and lending her 

vast experience to many committees.

during a very delicate time – the Second World War 

was fully underway. “Nino saved Famèe by taking on 

that responsibility,” Scaini says. “During those years, 

presidents of Italian clubs were arrested and taken to 

concentration camps, but Nino had no fear. He was a 

member of “Canadian officials’ training corps” university 

and was aware that no one would touch him.” 

In 1944 Tosoni joined Connaught Medical Research 

Laboratories, and under the supervision of Doctor 

Peter Maloney, worked to develop techniques for 

crystalizing penicillin, which led to the development 

of the famous pill. Modest, reserved, and very 

religious, Tosoni was proud of his Friulan roots and 

in later years dedicated himself to cuisine, seeking 

out recipes from his native land. 

Olga Zorzi Pugliese, a University of Toronto professor, 

dedicated some text to Tosoni. 

“Nino has been an example for our community’s 

youth,” Scaini concludes. “We will never forget his 

character and his charisma.”

This past November an official delegation from the People’s Republic of China visited the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity’s long term care residence. The Ruian 

delegation, organized through the Economic Development office of the City of Vaughan, included: Guan Xiuyun, Municipal People’s Government Deputy Mayor;

Dr. Chen Leads Discussion on Influenza: Me and You and the Flu

team organized a special 

evening. On Wednesday 

October 26th, residents, family 

members, friends, and staff 

enjoyed the festivities which 

included an elaborate dinner and 

entertainment. 

The third instalment of the 2011 Your Health Talk speaker series held on 

Wednesday, September 28th saw Dr. Danny Chen (Physician Lead, Infection, 

Prevention and Control, York Central Hospital) present information on the seriousness 

of influenza (especially among the very young and elderly), how it is 

spread and compelling reasons why healthcare workers and the public should 

get the annual influenza vaccine. The audience was thoroughly engaged and 

during the question and answer session Dr. Chen had the opportunity to 

demystify the influenza vaccine as well as addressing daily routines that can 

help prevent the spread of influenza (especially during “flu season”). 

The “Your Health Talk” speaker series is a community outreach service initiated and presented by Villa Leonardo 

Gambin Charity and York Central Hospital. The next topic, Dementia, Delirium, Depression presented by 

Dr. Peter Zelina (Chief, Department of Psychiatry and Medical Director, Mental Health Program) is scheduled for 

7:00pm on Wednesday, November 30th at the Charity’s long term care residence (Multi-purpose Room). For

Halloween Bash 

On Monday October 31st, residents, staff, 

volunteers and friends were enchanted with 

Ghosts and Ghouls, Witches and Princesses, 

Pirates and Punk Rockers. Villa Leonardo 

Gambin residence hosted a Halloween Bash like 

no other. With live entertainment by Oskar & 

Friend, the residents were treated to a parade 

of characters dressed in costume, cake and 

refreshments in the Multi Purpose Room. All 

Resident Home Areas also took part in a pumpkin 

carving contest. The pumpkins were on display 

in the lobby area, awards were given for best 

costumes and most creative pumpkins.
