With a resolute “cando” attitude, the Friuli Campus not only continues to be thehub of the social and cultural activities within our Friuliancommunity while simultaneously embracing the greater communitythrough the Friuli Terrace Seniors’ Residence and VillaLeonardo Gambin, Long Term Care Facility. The overwhelmingsupport and resolute commitment of our leaders and membershipover the years have produced this great legacy.With our history securely entrenched, we collectively must lookahead and acknowledge that changes and evolution to ourbeloved Famèe will continue in order to secure our future.Much like the roads traversed since inception have changedand evolved, so too will the roads ahead. Today we are at apivot point that requires us to work together to allow us toembrace and overcome our challenges. The association was establishedfour decades ago as a means by which families from the“paesi” of Valvasone, San Martino and Arzene (province ofPordenone in the region of Friuli - Venezia Giulia) could preserveand honour their rich cultural heritage.Throughout its history, helping others was never very far fromthe mindset of the members of the Valvasone Club. The association,under the leadership of its president Otello Ongaro aswell as the organizing committee used their special milestoneevent as an opportunity to raise funds for the Villa LeonardoGambin Charity’s long term care residence. Not only did theclub raise funds but it also donated a forty inch LCD television.The television was placed in the sixth floor activity room for the enjoyment of residents and their guests.The Gruppo Età d’Oro is another organization with an extensive history of community outreach andraising funds for charitable causes including the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity. Like the ValvasoneClub, the Gruppo Età d’Oro (spearheaded by an engaging executive: Luigi Tedesco, AntoniettaSantarossa, Bruno Blasutti, Domenic D’Agnolo, Lucia Quarin, Gina Comisso and Silvana Marson) hasbeen an unwavering supporter of the Charity’s long term care residence. Recently the seniorsorganization raised funds through its various special events to purchase a large flat screen televisionfor the expanded ground floor café – lounge. Best Wishes for 3 rd April!Dear Furlan friends of Toronto,On behalf of the Executive of the FogolârsFederation of Canada and myself, I would like toextend to you all my warmest wishes for April 3rd,2012.What is this anniversary about? It is the 935thAnniversary of the birth of Friuli. On April 3, 1077,the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Henry IV,created the Duchy of Aquileia and invested thePatriarch Sigeardo with the Feudal authority overthe territory. In so doing, he created the politicalentity that, today, we know as Friuli.It is a historical fact that by 1077, the large territory thatincluded what we today know as Friuli had alreadyachieved considerable economic and political maturityand there was already a quickly evolving local languagedistinctly different from Latin. It was not the Furlan oftoday but nonetheless a distinct language. ThePatriarchate had also developed very advancedpolitical institutions: for instance, in 1077, the firstParliament of nobles, clergymen and representativesof the urban communities of Friuli was created todiscuss the levy of taxes over the territory.By 1077, a serious rift had developed between PopeGregory VII and the Emperor, resulting in hisexcommunication.The Princes of the Empire seeing Henry IV as politicallyweakened, seized upon this opportunity to rebelagainst the Emperor. At Canossa, the Emperorresolved his differences with the Pope, and tried toreturn to Germany. Unfortunately for him, the rebelsblocked his passage through northern Italy. At thispoint, Sigeardo, an astute strategist, chose to alignhimself with the Emperor and assured him safepassage through Friuli also providing him militaryand logistic assistance for the journey.Undoubtedly, Sigeardo’s decision was a risky politicalgamble during such turbulent times. It did, however,prove to be auspicious since it prompted theEmperor to reward his loyalty by granting him fullpolitical and military power over the territory andthe power to coin his own currency, as well.Some would argue that were it not for theEmperor’s Bull that confirmed the temporal powerof Sigeardo over the land, history would have beenvery different today and there would be no Friuli aswe know it.Even if for many centuries the political powerscontrolling Friuli, since 1077, tried to thwart our cultureand language, such powers were never able extinguishthe flame of Friulian culture. Today, Friulian cultureand traditions and, most importantly, the language,have survived the test of time.Until a few years ago, this date had been lost in thenebulous past and barely mentioned in the historybooks. April 3, 1077, was only celebrated by a fewnostalgic poets, academics, and a smattering ofnationalist intellectuals.Since the 1990s, however, the Fogolârs, Fameis,and the Federation of the Fogolârs of Canada,inspired by their desire to maintain and cultivatetheir millennial culture, have urged all Friulians inFriuli and living abroad, to celebrate and showcaseFurlan culture tradition and language.Some Canadians might ask us why, as Canadians,we celebrate the 3rd of April. Others might saythat we are indirectly promoting Furlan isolationism.To these we answer that, as Canadians, we arefortunate to live in a rich multicultural society,which encourages us to celebrate and be proud ofour own origins. Hence we celebrate the nationaldates of this nation, Canada Day, Civic Holiday inOntario, St Jean Baptiste in Quebec. As Canadiansof Italian and Friulian origin, we also commemoratethe 2nd of June, Festa della Reppubblica Italianaand April 3rd, La Fieste dal Popul Furlan.Sometimes, jokingly perhaps, we are told that as,Friulians, we have unclear allegiances. Not longago, someone asked me whether I identify myselfwith Italy, Canada or Friuli.I replied that, of course, I am Canadian first butthat I cannot deny my heritage. It is a part of meand makes me who I am. It is my family’s history.The fact that I celebrate my mother’s birthday, aswell as, my wife’s and daughter’s, does not createa conflict. To the contrary, celebrating the threeof them makes me appreciate them all the more.There is absolutely no conflict with whom I identify.Today, as Friulian-Canadians we celebrate laFieste dal Popul Furlan on the 3rd of April, tohonour our cultural roots and our ancestry, byrenewing the promise to maintain our language,culture and traditions. We do this not becausewe believe we are better, but simply because weare proud of who we are and because we believewe serve this nation better by showing theFriulian portion of the multicultural mosaic. Wecan be good Canadians, good Furlans as well asgood Italians.It is in this spirit that we invite all Friulians in Canadaand around the world, to celebrate the 3rd of April.I would also like to take this opportunity toextend to Matthew Melchior, the Board ofDirectors and all the members of the FamèeFurlane of Toronto, our best wishes for your 80thanniversary. Dolomite Ski Club at Mt. TremblantThe Dolomite Ski Club enjoyed their annual ski trip to Mt.Tremblant from February 2 to 5. Fifty-eight fun loving people intotal – some flew, most travelled on the "party" bus and somecame in from the Ottawa and Montreal Fogolars. The trip startedwith a wonderful bus ride filled with wine, great food, lots oflaughter and even singing! Ski conditions were terrific andweather was great, with bright sunny skies on Saturday. Fridaynight was a communal “pot luck” gastronomic event; not evenroyalty feasts on such tasty delights. The gang was then entertainedby two of our skiers Henry and Mitch… THEY WEREGREAT!!! We all became their backup singers; the entertainmentwas rewarded with a standing ovation. Who would everguess that Gianna Ceschia is such a “Neil Diamond” fan, andwhen Mitch started in on Elvis; the ladies went nuts. We allarrived home safe and sound, thanks to our great bus driver.This year we had a number of “newcomers”. They enjoyed themselves tremendously and promise tocome back next year.If you know of folks who like to ski, let them know about our little group. We need to carry on thetradition that was started by a few members of the Famèe Furlane. We are about to celebrate our40th year and promise to make it extra special!!!! Join the fun, friendship and skiing.Contact 905-851-1166 for membership information.The Epiphany: Legend of the SpiderOn the eve of the Epiphany, bonfires mark the arrival of the befana and the Magi’svisit to Bethlehem commemorates the event for the Christian world.Not so long ago, children gathered around the hearth to listen to grandmother narratesome of her favourite stories or legends. It was with this in mind that this scenewas recreated in frontof the fireplace in theCanada Room to celebratethe Epiphany.Legends are tales tiedto historical events.The Legend of theSpider, narrated byLorraine Innocentinand performed withstick puppets, was presentedto theyoungest members ofthe Famèe Furlane .The Women’s Auxiliary spenthours planning and preparingfor this year’s presentation anddelighted its captivated audience.The legend highlightedthe Holy Family’s flight toEgypt and the effort of a lonespider, who had spun an intricateweb across the entrance ofthe cave where they hadsought shelter for the night.Tell us more – a captivated audience enjoying TheLegend of the Spider.Puppet masters awaiting their cue!The web deterred King Harold’s army fromharming Baby Jesus and the Holy Family was freeto continue its journey to Egypt.Preparing props - creative minds putting theirtalents to work.As the children were gettingready to leave, along with the traditionalgifts of tangerines andcandy, they took away an importantlife lesson: love for family andrespect for creatures great andsmall.To all involved a very specialthank you for your efforts, dedication,creativity and commitment.Renata MorasuttFamèe Furlane Women’s AuxiliaryHere comes the “befana” -Lorraine Innocentin.Along with traditional treats the kids alsowere gifted with special life messages.6

Hunter’s Dream!Passion for the sport of hunting was celebrated at the FamèeFurlane on January 20. A specially prepared wild game menuwas enjoyed alongside an infectious spirit of camaraderie, andun bon tai di vin. Famèe Furlane Chefs, Boris Rubitsov and DylanCaswell in collaboration with Chef Gianni Ceschia prepared asophisticated menu which consisted of a variety of delectablyplated presentations including duck, pheasant, venison, bisonand boar; an array pleasing to any game lover’s pallet.The evening also brought with it an opportunity for avidhunters to share stories and revisit hunting expeditionsthrough a series of slides. The “Pelee Island” group added tothe evening’s atmosphere by sporting colourful hunting vests.Matthew Melchior complimented the Famèe Furlane stafffor an excellent job and thanked all who participated,especially the organizers and sponsorship by Luciano andLuisa Drigo and The Honorable Julian Fantino MP.Matthew added “We are looking forward to doing it againnext year – buy tickets early as it was sold out!”2012 is the Famèe Furlane Toronto’s 80th anniversary andthe game night was but one in a series of activities plannedin celebration of this milestone.20 - Something Group Celebrates the New YearAs a way of kicking off the new year, the FamèeFurlane 20-Somethings Group hosted a Friulianinspired get-together dinner at al Fogolâr onJanuary 18th. FAMÈE FURLANE BOCCIOFILA -A Long History, a Vital PresenceFamèe Furlane Bocciofila is one of theoldest organizations on our campus.In fact, it was here before the buildingwas erected.Soon after the Famèe bought the pieceof farmland that was to become ourcampus, a few eager, dedicated sportsmen,led by Amerigo Dosso, withdonated materials, built bocce courts.Each Tuesday night, some 30 menwould drive up from the city to play.The joy of playing continued and in1989, moved into new quarters withthe construction of a new buildinghousing bocce courts; where it continuestoday. At its height, Bocciofila hadclose to 300 members. Tournamentswere enjoyed with other Fogolârs,Hamilton, Guelph, Milton, Windsorand as far away as Sudbury andThunder Bay. Over the years, teamsfrom Friuli, even Brazil played on ourcourts.Once a year, at theFamèe’s SportsLeagues dinner, trophiesand prizeswere presented totournament winners.Various sponsorssupported teamsthroughout theyears includingSiena Cheese andDr. Chiarot.‘bowled’, replacing the often-usedoverhand pitch.Today Bocciofila at the Famèe is stillactive, with some 70 players in themen’s and women’s leagues. They canbe found at Friuli Terrace courts eachWednesday night, enjoying friendlycompetition. The game offers goodexercise and lots of camaraderie.Mario Danelon has been President ofthe Men’s League for over 20 years.Maria Piasentin is currently Presidentof the Ladies’ League, which wasformed in 1980. Friuli Football Club (Friuli FC)On the heels of a great 2010 season, Friuli FC began the 2011campaign with the intentions of repeating the same doubleleague and play-offs championships. With much of thesame team returning; the beginning of the season startedoff well. Friuli played simple defence first approach andremained undefeated until the season midway pointbefore another squad was able to defeat Friuli FC for thefirst time in almost two years.One streak ended, another begins. Friuli started a run that finished the season infirst place. Two time division champions; Friuli FC! A new play-off format did notallow Friuli to rest. First round victory required the squad to replay the sameopponent as they were awarded a wild card as best loser of the first round.Snake bite! Friuli FC lost theirsemi final game in penalty kicksand the dream of a second consecutivedouble championshipwas gone. Here she is showing teachershow to crotchet the thin strip of recycledmilk bags into a mat. Teachers are veryinterested in sharing this project withtheir students. They are encouraging thestudents to collect the bags and hope toalso provide them with crotchet lessonsto create sleeping mats.Milk bags are still being collected by theActivity Office.On December 19, 2011 artist Mario Della Rossa presented abeautiful work of mosaic art to the tenants of Friuli Terrace.The mosaic piece will hang in the lobby of the terrace for allthe tenants and their visitors to enjoy.Christmas is a special time of year for the tenants ofthe Terraces. Part of the celebration is the elaboratepresentation of the nativity scene. These animals included Peanut, a 5foot Nile Monitor (lizard), Zoe, a 5 year old Catalina Macaw, lemurs, chinchillas,and a turtle to name but a few. Interactions with animals open up new pathwaysin the brain and help reduce cortisol levels—amajor stress hormone involved inalmost every ailment. She alsoenjoys reading books and newspapers.Mrs. Scainitti has a creative side as well,which is exhibited through her crochetingof items for her family. If asked to describe her, staff, volunteers, residents and family wouldsay she is lovable and has an affinity towards others.Maria Ciferni Scianitti was born in 1911 in Silvi Paesi, a small seaside town in Abbruzzo Italyto Nicola and Laura Ciferni, the town bakers. Maria was born into a family graced with poetsand composers: her great-great grandfather was the composer Francesco Paolo Tosti.In 1932 she married Antonio Scianitti, a cabinet maker. They had five children: Lucia;Ottavio; Lilliana; Michelle; and Michelina. Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1952 with thefamily’s two eldest children. Maria followed in 1955 with the two youngest daughters.Maria and Antonio were married for over fifty years.
