FAMÈE FURLANE BOCCIOFILA -A Long History, a Vital PresenceFamèe Furlane Bocciofila is one of theoldest organizations on our campus.In fact, it was here before the buildingwas erected.Soon after the Famèe bought the pieceof farmland that was to become ourcampus, a few eager, dedicated sportsmen,led by Amerigo Dosso, withdonated materials, built bocce courts.Each Tuesday night, some 30 menwould drive up from the city to play.The joy of playing continued and in1989, moved into new quarters withthe construction of a new buildinghousing bocce courts; where it continuestoday. At its height, Bocciofila hadclose to 300 members. Tournamentswere enjoyed with other Fogolârs,Hamilton, Guelph, Milton, Windsorand as far away as Sudbury andThunder Bay. Over the years, teamsfrom Friuli, even Brazil played on ourcourts.Once a year, at theFamèe’s SportsLeagues dinner, trophiesand prizeswere presented totournament winners.Various sponsorssupported teamsthroughout theyears includingSiena Cheese andDr. Chiarot.‘bowled’, replacing the often-usedoverhand pitch.Today Bocciofila at the Famèe is stillactive, with some 70 players in themen’s and women’s leagues. They canbe found at Friuli Terrace courts eachWednesday night, enjoying friendlycompetition. The game offers goodexercise and lots of camaraderie.Mario Danelon has been President ofthe Men’s League for over 20 years.Maria Piasentin is currently Presidentof the Ladies’ League, which wasformed in 1980. Each year at theirChristmas dinner, prizes are awardedto its members. The Leagues continueto be supported by Zentil UniversityPlumbing.Residents of both Villa LeonardoGambin and Friuli Terrace enjoy thefacilities as well. Terrace residentshave been playing since their buildingwas built, over 20 years ago. EachAt the end of the season, a get-together. It was developedto its present form by Italians. Today itis considered a national sport/pastimeand is played all over the country.There are professional teams in Italyand regular international tournaments.One major change to the sport hasbeen in the material the balls aremade of. They were once all made ofbronze; today the material is ‘raffa’, atype of plastic. The raffa balls are a littlelighter, allowing for the ball to beyear they join Villa residents andvolunteers in a tournament to winhandsome trophies.
