People ill with the influenza virus spread theillness to others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or moredays after becoming ill. Spread of the H1N1 influenza is thought to be occurringin the same way that seasonal flu spreads.The World Health Organization recommends that the best way to minimize thepotential spread and risk to others is to follow good infection control practices.These include:• Avoiding close contact with people who appear ill and who have fever and cough• Washing your hands with soap and water frequently and thoroughly• Practicing good health habits, including getting adequate sleep eatingnutritious food, staying physically fit• Coughing or sneezing into your elbow, not your hands• Avoid frequent touching your mouth and nose• Maintaining a clean environmentThere are currently 36 cases within Ontario and 8 within York Region (this articlewas written during the first week of May). All cases are considered to be a mildstrain of the flu and those affected are recovering in their homes. Young Furlans of the FameeDotôr Matthew Moretto - Indalegrament!Matthew Christopher Moretto has recentlycompleted the graduate programme at theBaylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals inHouston, Texas. In 2008, Matthew graduatedwith a Medical Doctor with Honor degree fromthe Baylor College of Medicine, which is rankedamong the top medical schools in the UnitedStates. At commencement, he also received aspecial award as an Outstanding Student inOrthopaedic Surgery.Previously, Matthew completed his undergraduatestudies with a Bachelor of Science degree at his parents’ alma mater, theUniversity of Michigan. Matthew’s sister Olivia is currently completing her undergraduatestudies in business at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.Matthew and Olivia’s proud grandparents, Elio and Dina Moretto, and many oftheir Canadian relatives are members of the Famee Furlane in Toronto. Their parents,Angelo (forever a Canadian!) and Donna Moretto, live in Plano, Texas.Celeste BorgheseVarious groups at the Famee Furlane havebeen active in collecting funds for theEarthquake Relief effort for the Abruzzo regionof Italy. Celeste Borghese, Miss Teen Vaughan,has been helping out in raising awareness forthe effort. She was at the Famee for the EasterBrunch festivities on Easter Sunday and sheattended the Societa Femminile’s banquet.Celeste’s mother, Serena Borghese, is a memberof the Famee Furlane. Any contributions you wish to make will be acceptedat the main office.Reflecting More Than Light a Mosaic Shines at St. AndrewsSurrounded by dust and buckets of small tiles in everycolour imaginable, a man works fervently with bothprecision and patience. Each tile is cut and put inplace to form a breathtaking work of art that glistensin the light. The art-form of creating mosaics has beenaround for centuries and it is still as labour-intensiveand time-consuming as in the days of old. This factdoes not deter Mario Della Rossa as he continues towork along side his partner Luigi Nasato, on a mosaicthat will be on display in time for Easter at St. Andrew'sRoman Catholic Church in Toronto. His passion formosaics radiates.Mario’s enthusiasm for mosaics was encouraged byhis family at a very young age. Despite financialstruggles and the death of his father at an earlyage, the family was determined to support Mario’sstudies at the world renowned Scuola Mosaicistidel Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy. His family’s sacrificeand support became a source of inspiration toMario, who gratefully seized this privileged opportunity.He became fully dedicated to mastering thiscraft. The Scuola Mosaicisti recognized his talentearly on as he was chosen top of his class in hisfirst year.After graduation, his love for mosaics was placedon hold due to the economic hardships of thetime. As we fast-forward to today and manymosaics later, Mario continues in his spare time,this classic art form with the same zeal he hadmany years ago. As the current piece at StAndrews nears completion, another project hasbeen booked, and instead of being exhausted,he's elated. Indeed, Mario has yet anotheropportunity to share his passion with the worldand honour his family’s sacrifice.The Madonna mosaic in the Villa LeonardoGambin chapel was created and donated byMario Della RossaMonica Granzotto & Marvin CruzSeafood Night at Al FogolarFor the second theme night of the year Nick Strazimiri, the manager at theFamee, prepared for us an elegant seafood feast on April 3rd. The chefs at theFamee, Dylan Caswell and Boris Rubtsov created a variety of non-traditionalseafood tastings for the 70 eager guests.The loudest group of the seafoodnight poses for a group shot.For hor d’oeurves, we had coconut shrimps,seafood wontons, salmon puffs and lobstercakes. This of course was preceeded by aProsecco toast to the chefs. The appetizerwas a seafood terrine served with bittergreens in a sweet lemon dressing.The set menu for the evening was accompaniedby several white wines as an appropriatepairing with a seafood theme. The pastaplate was lobster cannelloni in a tarragoncream with smoked tomatoes accompanied by the first white wine – Le DueTorri.The entree consisted of a fish fantasia: Salmon, Snapper and Tuna rolled in abasil butter sauce served with vegetables and potatoes. This was all accompaniedby the second white wine of the evening Malvasia delle Venezie.Nick would also like to remind everyone that in addition to these theme nightsevery couple of months, Al Fogolar has introduced Wednesday Night FamilyNight dinners. Every Wednesday Al Fogolar has a set menu 4 course dinner withchoices for a pasta plate and an entree for $25. The Social Group 1st Annual Wine Tasting DinnerLast winter the Social Group converged on Rossini’s restaurant to spend what we thought wouldbe just be a dinner out with fellow Furlan's. Well, the event was a “fieste di taiuts” to remember.Sergio Zanetti of Rossini’s and Luis Simeoni of the Famee selected a menu and wine pairing toserve us that night that on a scale of 1 to 10 was a “12”...as in a 12 course pairing! Each coursewas out-done by the next. The food was absolutely “delish” as they say and the wines were firstclass. What makes this restaurant so successful is, well, not only that a Furlan is working his magicin the kitchen, but the service by all the staff was impeccable. The superb selection of wine (notreadily available in our local liquor stores) was graciously supplied by Luis Simeoni, a member ofthe Famee and the Social Group. We thank Luis for always introducing us to some absolutely greatvintages. From compassion to action, our volunteershave shown us time and time again how instrumentaltheir role is here at the home. Through their dedication,support and passion they have truly been an inspiration anda pleasure to work with. On April 21st the programmedepartment hosted a “coffee break” for the volunteers andon Friday, April 24th honoured them with a luncheon.Good Friday ProcessionOn April 10th the residents re-enacted the Good Friday Procession, recreatingJesus’ last days on earth. This was our 3rd annual Procession and it wasenjoyed by the residents, families as well as tenants from Friuli Terrace.Thank you to all our volunteers who gave oftheir time to help make this a memorable event.Pasquetta Party - Easter CelebrationOn April 13th the residents celebrated Easter with their Pasquetta Party. Thisincluded entertainment by Rosario D’Amico, as well visits from family andfriends and plenty of dancing.Intergenerational Outing: VLG Residents visitVenerable John Merlini Elementary SchoolOn April 23the residents, volunteersand staff traveled to Venerable JohnMerlini Elementary School wherethey were honoured along withgrandparents of the students whoattend the school. There was plentyof entertainment, refreshments,prizes, gifts, and homemade sweets.A special thank you goes out to thestaff and students of VenerableJohn Merlini Elementary School fortheir hospitality.Upcoming Events at Villa Leonardo Gambin• Every Thursday afternoon the residents play bocce at Friulli Terrace Bocce Courts (from 2:00pm to 3:00pm)• Residence summer BBQ’s will be commencing in early June• June 11th and July 2nd respectively, residents will be visiting and having lunch in the town of Kleinburg from 11:00am - 1:30pm• Residents will be going to Marylake on June 18th and July 16th• Belly Dancers will be arriving to celebrate Fathers Day in the Multi Purpose Room on June 21st• There will be two outings to Boyd Park in June as well as in July• Tuesday June 30th, the residence will celebrate the June Birthdays with Johnny Sax and Vince Sgambelluri• Havanna Express will be performing on July 12th in the Multi Purpose Room• Our July Birthday’s will be celebrated on Tuesday July 28th with Greg Benoit.11
