The tenants at <strong>the</strong> terrace trulyenjoy keeping <strong>the</strong>se traditions alive.The Milk Bag Project Goes To SchoolOretta (seen in <strong>the</strong> picture) is visiting localschools to show teachers how <strong>the</strong> tenantsof Friuli Terrace are turning milk bags intosleeping mats for people in third worldcountries. Here she is showing teachershow to crotchet <strong>the</strong> thin strip of recycledmilk bags into a mat. Teachers are veryinterested in sharing this project with<strong>the</strong>ir students. They are encouraging <strong>the</strong>students to collect <strong>the</strong> bags and hope toalso provide <strong>the</strong>m with crotchet lessonsto create sleeping mats.Milk bags are still being collected by <strong>the</strong>Activity Office.On December 19, 20<strong>11</strong> artist Mario Della Rossa presented abeautiful work of mosaic art to <strong>the</strong> tenants of Friuli Terrace.The mosaic piece will hang in <strong>the</strong> lobby of <strong>the</strong> terrace for all<strong>the</strong> tenants and <strong>the</strong>ir visitors to enjoy.Christmas is a special time of year for <strong>the</strong> tenants of<strong>the</strong> Terraces. Part of <strong>the</strong> celebration is <strong>the</strong> elaboratepresentation of <strong>the</strong> nativity scene. VILLA LEONARDO GAMBIN RESIDENCEExotic Pets Visit <strong>the</strong> ResidenceOn a bi monthly basis <strong>the</strong> <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Leonardo</strong> <strong>Gambin</strong> Residence will be hostingHands On Exotics: animal assisted <strong>the</strong>rapy and activities for <strong>the</strong> residents.When <strong>the</strong>y arrived for <strong>the</strong>ir first visit of <strong>the</strong> year on Wednesday, January 18thvarious residents had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to meet Del, animal <strong>the</strong>rapist and hiswide range of <strong>the</strong>rapeutic exotic animals. These animals included Peanut, a 5foot Nile Monitor (lizard), Zoe, a 5 year old Catalina Macaw, lemurs, chinchillas,and a turtle to name but a few. Interactions with animals open up new pathwaysin <strong>the</strong> brain and help reduce cortisol levels—amajor stress hormone involved inalmost every ailment. Providing simplethings like laughter or a feeling of lovethrough an animal brings warmth to individualswho need it more than ever.Afya HortTherapy with SeanOffering a wide variety of workshops and demonstrations,residents, families, volunteers and staff have come to love<strong>the</strong> presence of Sean Chubbuck. Sean started coming to<strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Leonardo</strong> <strong>Gambin</strong> in 20<strong>11</strong> and has since shownresidents how to make maple syrup, chocolate, churnedbutter, ice cream and real wreaths. In January he facilitated<strong>the</strong> Hot Chocolate Workshop. Residents, as always hadan opportunity to experience <strong>the</strong> process of making hotcocoa <strong>the</strong> old fashioned way. Sean is an experienced horticultural<strong>the</strong>rapist who’s organization strives to improve<strong>the</strong> physical, cognitive, and emotional health of seniorsthrough non threatening facilitated activities and enabling<strong>the</strong>m to get in touch with nature, <strong>the</strong>ir surroundings as wellas <strong>the</strong>mselves.Craft Training withRita TesolinOn Monday January23rd Rita Tesolin,acclaimed Canadianjewellery fashiondesigner (and unwaveringsupporter of<strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Leonardo</strong><strong>Gambin</strong> <strong>Charity</strong>fundraising initiativesincluding its annualOak Leaf Gala), cameto <strong>the</strong> residence todemonstrate andinstruct volunteers andstaff on how to makebeautiful creationswith residents. Ritaalso brought along hermo<strong>the</strong>r, TersiliaTesolin and sister,Gabriella Tesolin whoassist her in makingher beautiful creations.It was an honour to have had such a creative and empa<strong>the</strong>ticperson visit and interact with us.Happy Birthday Maria Ciferni ScianittiOne Hundred and One Years YoungOn January 29th <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Leonardo</strong> <strong>Gambin</strong>resident Maria Ciferni Scianitti (a residentsince November 20<strong>11</strong>), celebrated herone hundred and first birthday. Auguri etantissimi saluti Maria!A deeply religious individual, Mrs.Scainitti’s great passion is saying <strong>the</strong>rosary and browsing through her biblewhich is always close at hand. She alsoenjoys reading books and newspapers.Mrs. Scainitti has a creative side as well,which is exhibited through her crochetingof items for her family. If asked to describe her, staff, volunteers, residents and family wouldsay she is lovable and has an affinity towards o<strong>the</strong>rs.Maria Ciferni Scianitti was born in 19<strong>11</strong> in Silvi Paesi, a small seaside town in Abbruzzo Italyto Nicola and Laura Ciferni, <strong>the</strong> town bakers. Maria was born into a family graced with poetsand composers: her great-great grandfa<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> composer Francesco Paolo Tosti.In 1932 she married Antonio Scianitti, a cabinet maker. They had five children: Lucia;Ottavio; Lilliana; Michelle; and Michelina. Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1952 with <strong>the</strong>family’s two eldest children. Maria followed in 1955 with <strong>the</strong> two youngest daughters.Maria and Antonio were married for over fifty years.
