The donorestablished the Cindy Walls Scholarship Fundnot only for girls and boys who are members ofcross country or track teams, but in general forstudents who meet certain academic achievementsand contribute to the betterment of the<strong>Bishop</strong> O’Connell community. 11th AnnualGala & AuctionFlagship Fundraiser Supports O’Connell ProgramsMore than 350 parents, alumni, facultyand friends of O’Connell gathered at theMcLean Hilton on Saturday, Feb. 4 forthe school’s 11th Annual Gala. This year’stheme—Knights Around the World—helped transport attendees to a magicalplace, where beautiful baskets and specialgift items were neatly arranged amidstflags and decorations from foreign lands.The evening began with a cocktail hourand silent auction, where the most popularitems were the homeroom baskets thatvaried in theme from single-cup coffeemakers to designer purses and spa packages.The guests enjoyed a three-course dinnerin the main ballroom and a fast-pacedlive auction where vacation homes, specialschool packages, and a reserved pew atgraduation created added excitement. Oneof the highlights of the evening was thepresence of Sir Lancelot, the miniatureEnglish Bulldog, who was auctioned offto the highest bidder. In the end, “Lance”went home to a very, very happy family.In addition to the auction, raffles and otherfundraising efforts of the night, generousattendees contributed $28,000 to theschool to purchase a second set of AppleiPads for classroom use. The event grossedclose to $200,000 to help advance the missionof O’Connell by supporting importantprograms at the school, including technologyinitiatives, facility improvements andfaculty development.The <strong>Bishop</strong> O’Connell community is gratefulto the sponsors of this year’s Gala, thegenerous donors who contributed uniqueand wonderful auction items, and to theindividuals who attended and made thissuch a successful evening.
