Over $4.5 Million Committed ThroughA total of $4.5 million has been raised incash and pledge commitments since thelaunching of The Time is Now strategicinitiative in May 2011. Included in the$4.5 million is a $100,000 gift of in-kindservices for this initiative.Athletic field construction on Mar. 13, 2012.The September groundbreaking on ourathletic field was the first project madepossible by this initiative. Constructionof our rectangular field is well under way,with the projected completion date in lateMay. While we are working on additionalfunding to fully renovate the baseballfield as part of the whole athletic renovationproject, several improvements onthe baseball field are currently underway,including new grass and and a new fencethat helps reclaim an expanded right field.The school expects to host its first homefootball game on the new field this fall.Mark your calendar for Saturday, Aug. 31,when the Knights will host <strong>Bishop</strong> Iretonat 3 p.m.TechnologyInitiativesDuring the fall, O’Connell was able toestablish a campus-wide wireless networkas a backbone for a host of technologyinitiatives.iPads in the ClassroomThanks to a generous individual donationthrough the Time is Now initiative, theschool has created a mobile iPad lab, completewith 25 Apple iPads, a mobile cart,a charging station and educational apps.The classroom iPad set has been makingthe rounds in the hallways of O’Connell.Teachers interested in integrating thistechnology into their curriculum workwith the administration and the IT departmentto schedule their use. The iPadshave been used in AP Psychology and inhistory classes for concept mapping andfor self-paced review, providing instantand individualized feedback. In governmentclasses, the iPads have served as anin-class research tool.In biology, the iPadshave helped studentsprepare for an upcominglab.The response by bothstudents and facultymembers to the effectivenessof the iPads asa tool in the classroomhas been overwhelming.Thanks to thegiving spirit at the 2012Gala, a second set ofiPads will be arriving atO’Connell shortly.BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)During the last quarter of the school year,O’Connell will pilot a BYOD (Bring YourOwn Device) program. With the wirelessnetwork in place, students will be ableto use personal smart phones, tablets,netbooks or laptops as directed by theirteacher. The pilot program this springwill be limited to specific classes, with afull-fledged program to be launched inthe fall.Technology issues repeatedly surfacedin our strategic focus groups last year asan area in need of critical upgrading.
