This years theme is “where wealthaccumulates and men decay”, an assessmentof the 21st century tiger economy.The Goldsmith festival has long been notedas a unique social, cultural and literary eventand this year features an outstanding arrayof informed, sometimes provocative andalways entertaining contributors. On FridayJune 2nd, under the chairmanship of PaulMcGrath TD, the official opening will beperformed by Fr. Peter McVerry, one ofIreland’s foremost champions of those onthe margins of Irish society.Then the Minister for Finance, Brian CowenTD, and Labour party Spokesperson onSocial and Family Affairs will debate thisyears theme. This will be followed by a paneldiscussion and finally musical entertainment.Saturdays events commence in the BogLane Theatre in Ballymahon, Co. Longfordwhere Kieran Allen of UCD and ConstantinGurdgiev of TCD will continue the debatefolowed by a lecture entitled, “Goldsmiththe Radical” by Athlone HistorianDr. Paddy Murray. A literary tour ofGoldsmith Country commencing at 2.30is followed by an evening of musicalentertainment in the famous “Three JollyPigeons” pub in Tang, near Athlone.The Festival ends on Sunday with poetryreadings from competitors in the GoldsmithInternational Poetry Competition, which thisyear attracted a huge entry. Renowned PoetsNoel Monahan and John F.
