CLINICAL REPORTSURGICAL REPAIR OF UPPER EYELID LACERATION IN A HORSE*1 2Mir Aamir Ali and Honnappa T.GEquine Hospital Bangalore Turf Club ltd, Bangalore, IndiaINTRODUCTIONUpper eyelid damage is more significant inhorses because the upper lid moves 75% more on theequine cornea than does the lower eyelid (Brooks2002). Eye Lid trauma needs to be corrected earlyand accurately as possible to prevent undesirable lidscarring and secondary corneal desiccation andulceration.HISTORYAND CLINICAL EXAMINATIONA three-year-old horse was presented to equinehospital with the history of fall and injury around theorbit and clinical examination revealed a lacerated eyelidwith an injury in the periorbital area. (Fig 1)layer was sutured a close to the lid margin as possiblewith 3-0 polypropylene. Simultaneously the periorbitalarea was sutured with stainless steel staples.(Fig2)JIVA Vol. 9 Issue 2 August 2011Fig 1. Lacerated upper eyelidRESULT AND DISCUSSIONHorse was anesthetised using xyalazine(@0.5mg/kg body wt i/v (Ilium xyazil-100, Troylabs) and ketamine @2mg/kg body wt i/v (ketamil,Troy labs) and the wound and eyelid margin wasaseptically prepared for surgery .The laceration wasclosed in two layers and the first layer of sutures wereplaced midway between conjunctiva, eyelid stromaand eyelid margin in a simple interrupted patternusing 4-0 polyglactin- 910. The closure of thelaceration was accomplished with the suturescommencing from the eyelid margin. The second54Fig 2 .Upper eyelid after SuturingPostoperatively Neosporin ophthalmicointment was applied thrice daily and tetanusprophylaxis was confirmed. The sutures were removedon 12th postoperative day and the wound healeduneventfully.Eyelid lacerations are frequently encounteredinjuries involving mainly the lower eyelid and theincidence of upper eyelid laceration is not common.Any abnormality in the function of the upper and lowereyelids predisposes the globe to secondary diseases dueto loss of the lipid part of the tear film, unevendistribution of tear and excessive exposure of the globeto UV light, which is provided by the eyelids (Brooks1999,2002,2007,2008; Gilger 2005). If let untreated oramputing the eyelid flaps would end in complicationslike chronic conjunctivitis, exposure keratitis, recurrentcorneal abrasions, trichiasis and cicatrial entropion or1Equine Hospital Bangalore Turf Club ltd, Bangalore, India2Dept. of Animal Reproduction Gynecology and Obstetrics,KVAFSU, Bangalore, India* Corresponding author email: alivetbtc@gmail.com
