THE OUTFEST LEGACY PROJECT
FOR LGBT FILM PRESERVATION
The Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, a collaboration between Outfest and the UCLA Film & Television Archive,
is the only program in the world dedicated to saving and protecting LGBT moving images from deterioration and neglect.
Access: Thanks to the contributions of our
filmmakers, as well as the generous support of
our Outfest members, the Legacy Project
Collection has grown steadily to become the
largest publicly accessible collection of LGBT
moving images in the world, with over 15,000 films.
Conservation and Preservation: Beyond
actively collecting LGBT film and video media for
permanent conservation and preservation, the
Legacy Project funds the restoration of damaged
films and videos to their original release quality.
Education: The Project conducts LGBT public
education and extensive outreach to filmmakers,
archivists and educators including a bi-monthly
screening series at the Billy Wilder Theater in
conjunction with UCLA.
QUEER THROUGH THE YEARS
FROM THE LEGACY PROJECT COLLECTION
From tea rooms to drag queens to lipstick lesbians,
this series of short films presents a fun and eyeopening
look at how our community and culture has
changed since the 1970s. The clips and movies in
QUEER THROUGH THE YEARS have been selected
from the world’s largest queer history collection at the
ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. In 2007, ONE
deposited its collection of rare film and videotape with
the Legacy Project at the UCLA Film & Television
Archive. Co-curated by Thomas De Simone
U.S. PREMIERE OF HIGH-DEFINITION TRANSFER
FROM THE LEGACY PROJECT COLLECTION
In this rare screening of Gregg Araki’s funny and
gritty first feature, a bisexual love triangle forms
amongst twentysomething, angst-ridden
Bohemians. David, a gay performance artist, is best
friends with Alicia, a film student who has a cute
boyfriend named Craig. Affections grow between
Craig and David, causing even more despair for the
three friends. Stylish, entertaining and shot guerrillastyle
in Los Angeles streets and coffee shops on a
tiny budget, Araki’s debut is a must-see gem.
The Legacy Project and Toronto International Film
Festival created this brand new high-definition
transfer from the original 16mm film elements,
including remastered audio.
