DOCS @ 5
Like a great story? The Outfest documentary lineup has plenty of them, and we have a special
offer for you this year - five amazing documentaries at 5 p.m. for only $5 each in Sunset 5
(okay, one of them is in the DGA)…truly a bargain!
25 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TEDDY AWARD
Revisit - or see for the first time - classic films that won prestigious Teddy Awards, the
influential queer film award given for the last quarter-century at the Berlin International Film
Festival. We’re thrilled that Wieland Speck, one of the founders of the Teddy Award and
director of the Berlin Panorama section will be on hand to introduce the screenings.
CODEPENDENT?
Well, so are the ladies in CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME. Written
and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Madeleine Olnek (Outfest 2008 Grand Jury Award
winner for Outstanding Short Film COUNTERTRANSFERENCE), this is one of the funniest
movies of the year. A film for men, women and E.T.s alike.
PLATINUM
It’s the 10th anniversary of Platinum, where film, art and performance meet. The debauchery
of Platinum Oasis at the Coral Sands Motel from 2001 will forever be a part of Outfest lore,
and we invite you to bring a little bit of your own style to our events at REDCAT and our
special party NIGHT MOVES to celebrate this milestone year.
DOLLY
We love a little (or a lot of) Ms. Parton over here at Outfest, and we know you do too. Watch
TOP 10 TIPS
FOR 2011
SHORTS
They’re before features, they’re in programs and they’re stronger than ever this year. Treat
yourself and discover new talent, exciting voices and people who have mastered the craft of
short-film storytelling.
THREE BEWILDERED PEOPLE IN THE NIGHT
The Outfest Legacy Project and the Toronto International Film Festival joined forces to create
an all-new digital remaster of the film that launched Gregg Araki’s career in 1987. Los
Angeles looks a lot different than it did when he shot this (R.I.P. Ships), but the film holds its
own even now.
MUSIC NON-STOP
Check out HIT SO HARD about former Hole drummer Patty Schemel (followed by a live
performance by her awesome new band, Psychic Friend) and gorgeous country star Chely
Wright’s story WISH ME AWAY. Rikki Beadle Blair (FIT) has a brand new drama, BASHMENT,
set in the British hip-hop scene, and Sheldon Larry brings us a fabulous L.A.-based musical,
LEAVE IT ON THE FLOOR. And a real coup for us is a live performance at REDCAT by
Genesis P-Orridge’s band Thee Majesty.
HARMONY SANTANA
Remember this name because you’ll be seeing her in many more films in the future. She’s
heartbreaking, tough, and beautiful in our opening-night gala film, GUN HILL ROAD (her first
acting role) and one sassy and flirty mama in EATING OUT: DRAMA CAMP.
NOT TO BE MISSED!
We love all the films in the festival, but we want to give you the inside track on a few films
that might slip by you - ones that you won’t want to miss. Here goes: SHE MONKEYS; WE
WERE HERE; OLD CATS; THE FAMILY COMPLETE; BOY CHEERLEADERS; HAPPY, HAPPY; THE
WISE KIDS….
GUN HILL ROAD
Dir/Scr: Rashaad Ernesto Green, 2011, USA, 88 min.
We are thrilled to open Outfest 2011 with GUN HILL ROAD, a powerful and moving family drama told with
authenticity and honesty.
After three years in prison, macho Enrique (Esai Morales) returns home to the Bronx and finds things changed.
His wife, Angela (Judy Reyes), is distant, and his teenage son, Michael, has come out as Vanessa, a
transgender woman. Unable to accept his child for who she is now, Enrique clings to his masculine ideals while
Angela attempts to hold the family together by fiercely protecting Vanessa. Still under the watchful eye of his
parole officer, Enrique must become the father he needs to be or once again risk losing his family and freedom.
The heart of GUN HILL ROAD lies in two places: the richly drawn character of Michael/Vanessa (newcomer
Harmony Santana is unforgettable) and a father’s inability to escape the vicious cycle of his life. Writer/director
Rashaad Ernesto Green’s first feature film is told with gentle humor, sensitivity and a deep understanding of the
environment that defines its inhabitants.
- Kim Yutani, Director of Programming
Tickets: 213.480.7065 or www.outfest.org
Rashaad Ernesto Green is a graduate of Dartmouth College and NYU Grad Film, recipient
of the Princess Grace Foundation Award and Spike Lee Fellowship. The Bronx native was
included on the latest edition of Filmmaker Magazine’s elite 25 New Faces of
Independent Film list as well as indieWIRE’s 2009 Ten New Voices in Cinema. Rashaad’s
first feature and thesis film GUN HILL ROAD premiered in the 2011 Sundance Film
Festival U.S. Dramatic Competition, where it was picked up for distribution by Motion Film
Group, and is slated to release this summer.
15TH ANNUAL OUTFEST ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
FENTON BAILEY & RANDY BARBATO
Few acts can balance mainstream popularity with cult status and maintain their independence, singular vision,
and relevance – especially in the mood shifting LGBT landscape. For twenty years, Fenton Bailey’s and
Randy Barbato’s World of Wonder global entertainment company has been producing ground breaking and
landmark film, television, and web programming often reflecting lifestyles and subjects no one else is brave
enough to approach. Their ambitious work has had a profound impact on LGBT audiences, and we’re proud to
call them part of the Outfest family.
Emerging from the ‘80s punk scene as disco-pop-rock duo The Fabulous Pop Tarts and NYU’s Graduate Film
Program, the multi-media partnership between Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato morphed into World of
Wonder in 1990. Their immediate success gave birth to an immense and diverse body of work including
1997’s “The Real Ellen Story,” the 1998 Outfest award-winning “shockumentary” PARTY MONSTER; the
wildly popular documentary THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE that opened Outfest in 2000; and “101 Rent Boys”
also in 2000.
In 2003, Randy and Fenton became the first filmmakers to twice open Outfest – this time with a scripted
version of the “party monster” story (PARTY MONSTER). Over the years they have produced work for almost
every US Cable Network, including six seasons of “Tori & Dean” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” now shooting its
fourth season. They premiered their latest documentary film BECOMING CHAZ at this year’s Sundance Film
Festival and in May the film was broadcast on OWN as the first film in the Oprah Winfrey Documentary Club.
Randy and Fenton continue to expand their reach with everything from blogs to an art gallery and a coffee
table book. WOW. WOW.
CIRCUMSTANCE
Dir/Scr: Maryam Keshavarz, 2011, USA, Iran, Lebanon, 105 min.
In a vibrant contemporary Tehran, two beautiful teenage girls struggle for their
personal freedom. Atafeh and her best friend Shireen are full of youthful
exuberance and a healthy streak of rebellion as they drink, smoke and go dancing
at underground parties. When Atafeh’s brother Mehran returns from drug rehab,
he embraces a new way of life and joins the Morality Police - much to the surprise
of his affluent and liberal parents - and becomes increasingly obsessed with and
involved in Atafeh and Shireen’s intimate relationship.
Nikohl Boosheri (Atafeh), Sarah Kazemy (Shireen) and Reza Sixo Safai (Mehran)
smolder on screen in their fearless and complex performances. A feast for the
senses, CIRCUMSTANCE is the original vision of writer/director Maryam
Keshavarz, whose first feature effort creates a stylish and sensual coming-of-age
film, presenting a timely and important story of a new generation of women in Iran
who dream of a place where they can be free.
Winner of the Audience Award: Dramatic at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
- Kim Yutani, Director of Programming
Maryam Keshavarz’s first feature documentary,
THE COLOR OF LOVE, an intimate portrait of the
changing landscape of love and politics in Iran,
won numerous awards at film festivals and was
broadcast internationally. Her short THE DAY I DIED
garnered accolades at the Mar del Plata
International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand
International Short Film Festival, and New York Film
Festival, and it was the only short to win two
awards - a Teddy Award and an honorable mention
for the Jury Prize - at the Berlin International Film
Festival. CIRCUMSTANCE is Keshavarz’s first
narrative feature.
WEEKEND
Dir/Scr: Andrew haigh, 2011, UK, 96 min.
British filmmaker Andrew Haigh, winner of Outfest 2009’s Artistic Achievement
Award for his first feature, GREEK PETE, returns to the festival with his second
feature - already an acclaimed award-winner itself. With the same intimacy and
rare authenticity of his impressive debut, WEEKEND explores the relationship
between two young gay men that evolves from a drunken one-night stand into a
dynamic and complex portrait of modern gay romance over the course of a booze,
drug and sex fueled weekend, building to a delicate emotional climax.
The chemistry between coleads Tom Cullen and Chris New lights fire to a precise
yet free-flowing script that allows them to playfully explore the dimensions and
shifting moods of their characters. The film's natural rhythm utilizes the confines of
its construct to explicitly and unapologetically express themes that transcend
sexuality without ever denying it. WEEKEND advances the gay narrative - both
filmic and socially - in ways that few films have.
HIT SO HARD
Dir: P. David Ebersole, Scr: P. David Ebersole & todd hughes, 2011, USA, 101
min.
Patty Schemel, the hard hitting drummer of Courtney Love's seminal rock band
Hole, is not only a master of the sticks, but a true survivor. After growing up as
an outsider near Seattle she shot to stardom in the early 90’s and was engulfed
by the music scene. Patty casually documented her life as a rock star – at band
practice, on the road, backstage and in front of millions of people. She captured
rare, precious moments behind the scenes with Hole and Kurt Cobain and the
intense highs and lows of these dynamic relationships often shaped by an
addiction that consumed her and almost killed her.
Director P. David Ebersole has masterfully woven Patty’s Hi8 videos with
contemporary interviews of Patty, her band mates (including Love, Melissa Auf
der Maur and Eric Erlandson), other musicians, and important figures in Patty’s
life to craft a story that is as beautiful and inspirational as it is a significant
cultural record.
Dir/Scr: tom tykwer, 2010, Germany, subtitled, 119 min.
In one of his most singular and stylish films, German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (RUN
LOLA RUN) returns to Berlin for the setting of this seductive drama centered on an
upscale middle-aged couple whose routine coexistence is upset when they
separately encounter the same man and explore their sexual fluidity.
Complementing an inventive narrative with a slick visual polish and dynamic
soundtrack, Tykwer crafts a sophisticated film full of ideas and themes that range
from erotic to darkly comic to cruel and fatalistic. Sophie Rois (Hanna) and
Sebastian Schipper (Simon) deliver pitch-perfect performances as the married
couple, and Devid Striesow brings a unique dimension to his role as their unwitting
lover, Adam. When a complication threatens to expose their carefully guarded
secrets, the resolution is both surprising and inevitable.
THE PERFECT FAMILY
Dir: Anne Renton, Scr: Claire V. Riley, Paula Goldberg, 2011, USA, 84 min.
How far will one suburban housewife go to win the Outstanding Catholic of the
Year Award? Dedicated churchgoer Eileen Cleary (Kathleen Turner, in a
heartbreaking performance) will bend over backwards to portray her dysfunctional
brood as the Catholic ideal, even though her son (Jason Ritter) has just left his
wife for the woman he really loves, and Eileen’s daughter Shannon
(Emily Deschanel) is about to marry her lesbian lover.
In her feature film debut, filmmaker Anne Renton skillfully balances the dramatic
tension with a humorous undertone centered on Eileen’s struggle to reconcile her
faith and her goal of perfection with the reality of her life. A talented cast that
also includes Angelique Cabral and Richard Chamberlain bolsters this
unforgettable comedy-drama.
-Alonso Duralde, Feature Film Programmer
Anne Renton has studied extensively as an actor and
voice-over artist, and has worked in both
independent film and television. In 2007, Anne
directed and produced the award- winning short
film LOVE IS LOVE (Outfest 2007) featuring Emmy
winner Jane Lynch. A graduate of Sydney University
with a B.S. in Physiotherapy, Anne also served as a
and live performance that attacked the
boundaries of cinema.
Three years later her vision was realized when
she, Cooper, Athey and Davis curated the
legendary, epic, infamous Platinum Oasis, an
18 hour durational overnight arts fest with 40
rooms of media, interactive and salon-style
installations at the notorious Coral Sands
Motel. It dropped the jaws of even the jaded.
The event was repeated the following year and
in 2003, the signature event featured Platinum
SnapMeat (a collaboration between Frilot and
digital media artist, Shu Lea Cheang) a
futuristic sex trade scenario amidst a band of
Mad Max lot lizards that rocked the historic
Ambassador Hotel.
In tandem with these immersive performative
events, experimental programming has found its
home in the Outfest program, and now Platinum
has shacked up with the gorgeous REDCAT.
Outlaws, renegades, art stars, trend-setters
and underground smut have participated in
Platinum through the years. Bruce LaBruce,
Barbara Hammer, Hans Scheirl, Tom Chomont,
Arthur Russell, Peter Berlin, Jenn Reeves,
Penny Arcade, Catherine Opie, Juliana Snapper,
among others… the list is longer than Carolee
Schneemann’s scroll.

BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE
Dir: Marie Losier, 2011, france/USA, 75 min.
BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE is a tender portrait of rebel performance artist and music pioneer
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) and her soul mate and collaborator, Lady Jaye.
P-Orridge’s contributions to the industrial and underground music scene in the 1970s take backseat to the
couple’s great love affair and daring gender and identity transformations they underwent for their Pandrogyne
project, where the pair received surgical procedures to merge into a third pandrogynous being. Winner of the
Teddy for Best Documentary at 2011 Berlinale.
COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER
Dir: A.L. Steiner & A.K. Burns, 2010, USA, 69 min.
COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER playfully meshes the
erotics of a community of lovers, friends and
collaborators where the personal is not only political,
but sexual. This queer, trans and women-centered
project is heavily inspired by seminal 1970s porn - yet
the film demands that this representation not only be
included but attacks the canon of pornography itself.
CAC is set to a soundtrack of Chicks on Speed,
Electrelane, K8 Hardy, Lesbians on Ecstasy, Light
Asylum, Thee Majesty and MEN and includes original
compositions by Justin Bond, Ashland Mines & Wu
Get ready for “one small thrill” after another as Outfest travels to the Lone Star state for one unforgettable night with Miss
Mona and the girls! Dolly Parton stars as the proprietor of the most tuneful house of ill repute in musical comedy history, but
not even her especially close relationship with local sheriff (Burt Reynolds) can save her business when a nosy TV reporter
(Dom DeLuise) starts kicking up a fuss. Featuring great songs like “I Will Always Love You” and “Hard Candy Christmas,” this
beloved musical promises a wild night of hootin’ and a-hollerin’.We can't say too much, but we wouldn't dare ask our
Romeo and Juliet has never been more provocative than in this contemporary all-boy staging. Writer/director Alan Brown
transfers the setting from fair Verona to a high school military campus where a small group of boys from rival schools act out
the tragedy in real life. This bold adaptation eschews convention and challenges common perceptions of masculinity, gay
youth and the military. Anchored by solid performances, the film balances the tough dialogue, tender romance and unique
setting with an erotic rhythm and a few surprising twists.
TEDDY
AWARDS 25
In 1987, Manfred Salzgeber and Wieland Speck gave souvenir teddy bears to Gus Van Sant and Pedro Almodovar at a
gay bookstore in Berlin in recognition of their achievements in LGBT cinema. What began organically has grown into an
institution: The Teddy Awards are the foremost international recognition that can be bestowed to an LGBT narrative,
documentary and short film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The awards have boosted films in the marketplace,
and the ceremony is a highlight of the Berlinale. Having served as president of this year's 25th anniversary jury, I found it
both an honor and a serious responsibility to uphold. Whether presided over by Tilda Swinton or Javier Bardem, the Teddy
is a glittering sui generis award that celebrates what we stand for.
teacher is dating a woman, but when he finds himself in a gay bar, he meets and falls in love with a young man. Through this
relationship he finds the courage to accept who he is entirely. Significantly, the film premiered in 1990 at the Berlin Film
LAW OF DESIRE
One of the most creative, provocative and prolific filmmakers alive today, Pedro Almodóvar’s canon of films represents one of
the greatest bodies of work in film history. This film portrays a love triangle between a gay film director; his transgender sister
and actress (Carmen Maura), and a murderously obsessive stalker (Antonio Banderas). Coming a year before his international
sensation WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, Almodóvar has said that LAW OF DESIRE “is the key film in
THE MAN WHO DROVE WITH MANDELA
Dir: Greta Schiller, Scr: Mark Gevisser, 1999, UK/South Africa/netherlands, 82 min.
FROM THE LEGACY PROJECT COLLECTION
The man who drove with Mandela was Cecil Williams, an acclaimed gay white theatre director living in South Africa who
assisted with the inception of the black anti-apartheid movement. From Greta Schiller, director of the acclaimed
documentaries PARIS WAS A WOMAN and BEFORE STONEWALL, this remarkable documentary relates Williams’ story while
skillfully drawing parallels between the plight of South African blacks and the dilemma of a gay man of conscience living in a
society that prohibits expression of his identity and core beliefs.
The highly anticipated BBC film adaptation of Sarah
disappoint, with all the mystery, betrayal and hunger
you would expect from the author of Fingersmith
intertwining secrets and desires reflect the precious
humanity and havoc of the war that serves as their
backdrop. A hauntingly beautiful story, this poignant film
PAUL GOODMAN CHANGED
MY LIFE
Dir: Jonathan Lee, 2011, USA, 89 min.
Lesser known today than his more celebrated counter
culture contemporaries, Paul Goodman is mostly
remembered for his book Growing Up Absurd (1960),
which gave voice to a generation of young people and
helped define a New Left. He was an openly bisexual
philosopher, poet, essayist, and pacifist whose work
was essential to the emerging gay movement of the
early 1970s. Privately, he lived his life with equal
devotion to a wife and family he cherished. Using a
wealth of archival footage and interviews with family,
friends, and scholars this film is a moving tribute to
Goodman’s writings and legacy, and a thoughtful
exam of his unapologetic lifestyle.
THE BEST LITTLE
WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS
Dir: Colin higgins, Scr: Larry L. King, Peter
Masterson & Colin higgins, 1982, USA, 114 min.
Get ready for “one small thrill” after another as Outfest
travels to the Lone Star state for one unforgettable
night with Miss Mona and the girls! Dolly Parton stars
as the proprietor of the most tuneful house of ill repute
in musical comedy history, but not even her especially
close relationship with local sheriff (Burt Reynolds) can
save her business when a nosy TV reporter (Dom
DeLuise) starts kicking up a fuss. Featuring great
songs like “I Will Always Love You” and “Hard Candy
Christmas,” this beloved musical promises a wild night
of hootin’ and a-hollerin’. We can't say too much, but
we wouldn't dare ask our audience to stay quiet when
they see those lyrics onscreen!
Miss Margaret Cho is back, and she has a few
things she’d like to share with you. From her
Palins during “Dancing with the Stars” to musical
interludes featuring Cho’s witty original songs, this
new concert film from our favorite all-American girl
also never look at the “American Idol” contestants
the same way again, but you’ll just have to hear
Margaret explain that one.)
status and maintain their independence, singular
vision, and relevance – especially in the mood shifting
LGBT landscape. For twenty years, Fenton Bailey’s
entertainment company has been producing ground
breaking and landmark film, television, and web
programming often reflecting lifestyles and subjects no
one else is brave enough to approach. Join the
PUNKS
Anniversary Screening
Dir/Scr: Patrik-Ian Polk, 2000, USA, 104 min.
Before his hit series “Noah’s Arc,” Patrik-Ian Polk
made a splash at Outfest 2000 with his debut
feature PUNKS. Infusing its hip-hop and R&B
rhythms into a completely black gay world in West
Hollywood, PUNKS is a romantic comedy featuring
Marcus, a successful 20-something photographer
who becomes infatuated with his completely
gorgeous and supposedly straight neighbor Darby.
Full of fresh characters, snappy dialogue and great
performances, it’s a pleasure to revisit the notoften-seen
