TEDDY
AWARDS 25
In 1987, Manfred Salzgeber and Wieland Speck gave souvenir teddy bears to Gus Van Sant and Pedro Almodovar at a
gay bookstore in Berlin in recognition of their achievements in LGBT cinema. What began organically has grown into an
institution: The Teddy Awards are the foremost international recognition that can be bestowed to an LGBT narrative,
documentary and short film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The awards have boosted films in the marketplace,
and the ceremony is a highlight of the Berlinale. Having served as president of this year's 25th anniversary jury, I found it
both an honor and a serious responsibility to uphold. Whether presided over by Tilda Swinton or Javier Bardem, the Teddy
is a glittering sui generis award that celebrates what we stand for.
teacher is dating a woman, but when he finds himself in a gay bar, he meets and falls in love with a young man. Through this
relationship he finds the courage to accept who he is entirely. Significantly, the film premiered in 1990 at the Berlin Film
Festival, the same night that the Berlin Wall came down.
GO FISH
Dir: Rose troche, Scr: Rose troche & Guinevere turner, 1994, USA, 83 min.
Director Rose Troche and co-writer Guinevere Turner created a new standard for lesbian-themed films. Capturing everyday
life in Chicago set within a Sapphic world, this scrappy black-and-white romantic comedy tells the story of Max (the
captivating Turner) looking for love in all the wrong places until she meets her unlikely match for her in gawky Ely (V.S.
Brodie). Sexy, funny and full of inside jokes, GO FISH remains a classic.
Winner of the Teddy Award for best feature film in 1994.
LAW OF DESIRE
Dir/Scr: Pedro Almodóvar, 1987, Spain, subtitled, 102 min.
One of the most creative, provocative and prolific filmmakers alive today, Pedro Almodóvar’s canon of films represents one of
the greatest bodies of work in film history. This film portrays a love triangle between a gay film director; his transgender sister
and actress (Carmen Maura), and a murderously obsessive stalker (Antonio Banderas). Coming a year before his international
sensation WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, Almodóvar has said that LAW OF DESIRE “is the key film in
my life and career.”
Winner of the Teddy Award for best feature film in 1987.
THE MAN WHO DROVE WITH MANDELA
Dir: Greta Schiller, Scr: Mark Gevisser, 1999, UK/South Africa/netherlands, 82 min.
FROM THE LEGACY PROJECT COLLECTION
The man who drove with Mandela was Cecil Williams, an acclaimed gay white theatre director living in South Africa who
assisted with the inception of the black anti-apartheid movement. From Greta Schiller, director of the acclaimed
documentaries PARIS WAS A WOMAN and BEFORE STONEWALL, this remarkable documentary relates Williams’ story while
skillfully drawing parallels between the plight of South African blacks and the dilemma of a gay man of conscience living in a
society that prohibits expression of his identity and core beliefs.
Winner of the Teddy Award for best documentary in 1999.
Todd Haynes’ career continues to hit new heights with films like FAR FROM HEAVEN and most recently, the awe-inspiring
HBO mini-series “Mildred Pierce”, but it was his debut feature POISON that established him as the great hope of the New
Queer Cinema of the early ‘90s. Twenty years later, POISON remains bold and fresh, exploring sexual obsession, deviance
and passion in a fashion that continues to defy age.
