The celebration will climax with NIGHT MOVES: THE PLATINUM 10th ANNIVERSARY PARTY at the haunted Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles where hostess Nao Bustamante will guarantee you dance, sweat and squeal to the music spun by DJ AUTOMATON and DJ KIM AHN. Artists including: Ladyboys of Sweaty Sundays choreographed by Ryan Heffington, Heather Cassils, Christopher Kreiling, Vagina Wolf and the PERMS, Pigs in the Parlour and Drew Droege among others will pepper the party, hide in the shadows and perform work inspired by the space; TRIPLE X will fill the room with sexxxy, succulent sexploitation images … and you know we have more tricks up our sleeve. Spring Street, LA $10 cover at the door, $5 with Platinum ticket stub or Outpass If Ron Athey, Miss Vaginal Davis, John Cooper and Shari Frilot had consummated their relationship – and got knocked up – the beautiful bastard child could’ve been called Platinum. Back in 1998, Vaginal Davis screened a series of her short videos for then Outfest Programmer Shari Frilot. The reception was so delicious that it fueled Frilot’s desire to create a westcoast showcase for experimental film, video and live performance that attacked the boundaries of cinema. Three years later her vision was realized when she, Cooper, Athey and Davis curated the legendary, epic, infamous Platinum Oasis, an 18 hour durational overnight arts fest with 40 rooms of media, interactive and salon-style installations at the notorious Coral Sands Motel. It dropped the jaws of even the jaded. The event was repeated the following year and in 2003, the signature event featured Platinum SnapMeat (a collaboration between Frilot and digital media artist, Shu Lea Cheang) a futuristic sex trade scenario amidst a band of Mad Max lot lizards that rocked the historic Ambassador Hotel. In tandem with these immersive performative events, experimental programming has found its home in the Outfest program, and now Platinum has shacked up with the gorgeous REDCAT. Outlaws, renegades, art stars, trend-setters and underground smut have participated in Platinum through the years. Bruce LaBruce, Barbara Hammer, Hans Scheirl, Tom Chomont, Arthur Russell, Peter Berlin, Jenn Reeves, Penny Arcade, Catherine Opie, Juliana Snapper, among others… the list is longer than Carolee Schneemann’s scroll.
BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE Dir: Marie Losier, <strong>2011</strong>, france/USA, 75 min. BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE is a tender portrait of rebel performance artist and music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) and her soul mate and collaborator, Lady Jaye. P-Orridge’s contributions to the industrial and underground music scene in the 1970s take backseat to the couple’s great love affair and daring gender and identity transformations they underwent for their Pandrogyne project, where the pair received surgical procedures to merge into a third pandrogynous being. Winner of the Teddy for Best Documentary at <strong>2011</strong> Berlinale. SATURDAY | July 9 | 7:00pm | REDCAT PLATINUM SECTION THEE MAJESTY PERFORMANCE Thee Majesty will play a full set of their ambient soundscapes with spoken word performed by radical pioneering musician and artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV). Genesis is the subject of the documentary THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE and will be joined by collaborators avant-garde guitarist Bryin Dall (Hirsute Pursuit, 4th Sign of the Apocalypse and A Murder of Angels) and percussionist Edley ODowd (Psychic TV and Toilet Boys). This rare performance promises to combine poetry of a transgender creation story, music improvisation and hypnotic loops with blistering noise into a disorienting lullaby that is not to be missed.
