Abstract:<br />
Telecommut<strong>in</strong>g refers to the substitution for work at the workplace with work at home or other locations<br />
close to home. The <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> telecommut<strong>in</strong>g stems from its potential benefits <strong>in</strong> trip reduction,<br />
congestion mitigation, cost sav<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>of</strong>fice space, <strong>in</strong>creased productivity, and better home-work balance,<br />
etc. This paper presents a study <strong>in</strong> explor<strong>in</strong>g the factors that <strong>in</strong>fluence people's telecommut<strong>in</strong>g behavior<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g the 1995 <strong>National</strong> Personal Transportation <strong>Survey</strong> (NPTS), 2001 and 2009 <strong>National</strong> <strong>Household</strong><br />
<strong>Travel</strong> <strong>Survey</strong> (<strong>NHTS</strong>) data. This paper contributes to the field by provid<strong>in</strong>g a comprehensive analysis<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g national survey data as well as exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the trend over the years. More importantly, the analysis<br />
advances the understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the characteristics <strong>of</strong> those who telecommute by detailed category <strong>of</strong><br />
telecommut<strong>in</strong>g frequency. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> this study are essential as a first step toward the capability <strong>of</strong><br />
estimat<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g telecommut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the travel demand forecast<strong>in</strong>g process.<br />
