MauriceMandrake is a best-selling author whodoesn’t care about science, and tries toget patients to tell him what he wants tohear for his next best-selling book onnear-death experiences. Almosteverybody in the hospital detests him,but he donated so much money from hisprevious best-seller that he can get awaywith almost anything. Dr. JoannaLander is a psychologist doing seriousscientific research into near-deathexperiences, and Dr. Richard Wright isa neurologist who has just begun a studytrying to duplicate near-deathexperiences using psychoactive drugs.Joanna starts helping Richard with hisresearch project, and eventually allowsherself to be a research subject in hisstudy because of problems with his otherresearch subjects.
