FOURTH OF JULY COMMITTEEWe are pleased to provide this annual message on behalf of the Orleans Fourth of JulyCelebration Committee. The 2008 Orleans Fourth of July celebration began with the Parade held on Friday, July4, 2008. This year’s Parade had one of the biggest crowds ever and the weather wasbeautiful. The following evening the Fireworks were held at Rock Harbor at dusk. Theweather that evening was hampered by a bit of rain and fog but in spite of the poorweather, the fireworks went off as scheduled. The display was spectacular and thespirit of those watching was not dampened by the weather. Again, the Fireworks werefully funded by the Friends of the Fourth through private donations. Many thanks fromthe Committee and the Town of Orleans. Additionally, we would like to thank theOrleans Police and Fire Departments for their time and hard work. It was muchappreciated. The theme of this year’s parade was “Our Town by the Sea”. A fourth grader at theOrleans Elementary School, Alexander Fay-Smith, created this slogan and entered it inthe Orleans Elementary School Parade Theme Contest.Steve Edwards was this year’s Grand Marshall. Steve worked for over three decades asa Member of the Orleans Fire and Rescue, and for the last number of years, as theTown of Orleans Fire Chief. Chief Edwards also served as the Town of OrleansEmergency Management Director for many years. As always, there were many creative entrants in the Parade this year, with muchenthusiasm for the new environmental category. We had 69 parade entries, a greatturnout, and we happily welcomed new groups and many faithful returnees.2008 Parade WinnersBusiness Category1 st - Fritz Haubner Memorial AwardThe Farm2 nd - Fitness Revolution3 rd - Salt Water GrillFamily/Supporting Families1 st - Stewart Family2 nd - Bee Mobile3 rd -The Real Estate CompanyGeneral1 st - Bob Ward Memorial AwardOrleans Animal Hospital2 nd - Meeting House Preschool3 rd - Orleans CardinalsEnvironmental1 st - Nauset Fish Market2 nd - Green Energy3 rd - Orleans Pond CoalitionWe are looking forward to next year’s Fourth of July celebration activities.
