It led to thoughts about other Lewes eating establishments with views, or (dare she suggest it without tempting fate to send us a summer of rain) where you can eat outside. If it’s a view you’re after, the outdoor tables in Pelham House’s pretty garden offer lovely ones over the Downs and to Newhaven beyond, similar to those from the terrace behind the White Hart. The Grange Café has the best garden setting, but Shelley’s garden is also pretty, albeit with sadly fewer mature trees and shrubs than there were a couple of months ago. The smoking ban, of course, has led to more outdoor eating possibilities. The Lewes Arms’ new bandstand-like section to the right of the pub door is a fine place to eat, though bear in mind its primary purpose. The Brewer’s Arms and the Elephant have also created new gardens, albeit paved ones: the Brewers have planted herbs to make it feel like less of a yard. Those of you who haven’t ventured into Prezzo’s have missed out: there’s a nice terrace which sits, almost literally, in the shadow of the castle. Finally, to my favourite three al fresco spaces in Lewes. Most Lewesians never make it as far as the Swan, which is a mistake. It’s worth it just for the garden round the back, where you can eat in the company of a colony of white doves hanging out on the roof. If it’s solitude you’re after, though, or a place for an illicit tryst, Station Street’s Garden Room Café and Lewes Patisserie have pretty, almost secret, garden areas to sit out in.
