So, you w<strong>an</strong>t to be <strong>an</strong> academic!• Here, thoughts <strong>an</strong>d ideas to be presentedare entirely my own• Backdrop- long years <strong>of</strong> experience inacademia <strong>an</strong>d industry• Also, networking with academics aroundthe world• Not all traits listed c<strong>an</strong> be present in everyacademic (except in a super-academic!)academic!)-they are listed for <strong>an</strong> Ideal <strong>Academic</strong>


Typical Tasks <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Academic</strong>• Teaching• Research- primarily initiation/supervision• Service- to Department, Faculty,University, Society, Pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>an</strong>dIndustry/Business• Distribution <strong>of</strong> time/effort between abovedepends on institutional culture <strong>an</strong>dseniority <strong>of</strong> individual


Import<strong>an</strong>t <strong>Traits</strong>• Willingness to work very hard with not-soso-attractive compensation : nine-toto-five syndromeis a recipe for failure in academia• Common misconception among the lay people isthat academics have a “cozy” job- far from it inmost major institutions!• Remember that practically the whole world willjudge your perform<strong>an</strong>ce as <strong>an</strong> academic !• Your record is public information <strong>an</strong>d accessibleto <strong>an</strong>y one who wishes to have access!


Import<strong>an</strong>t qualities required• Ability to be self-critical, accept external criticism<strong>an</strong>d be creatively destructive <strong>an</strong>d innovative• Dislike <strong>of</strong> status quo is key to innovation inteaching, research <strong>an</strong>d service• Must recognize time-dependence <strong>of</strong> researchresults, teaching/learning technologies• Must be able to think productively, creatively<strong>an</strong>d critically• Willingness to share 100% <strong>of</strong> knowledge withothers without reservation


Qualities (contd(contd)• Must keep abreast <strong>of</strong> current literature onpedagogy, instructional technology, <strong>an</strong>dresearch in areas <strong>of</strong> interest• Must have breadth in research area <strong>an</strong>d depth insub-areas ( a recognized expert!)• Must be a leader <strong>an</strong>d not follower• Must be able to impart leadership skills• Have excellent oral/written communication skills• Must inspire confidence <strong>an</strong>d enthusiasm instudents under tutelage


Qualities (Contd(-2)• Must be a team player• Must think globally but able to act locally• Must be <strong>an</strong> excellent role model• Must be able to develop a network <strong>of</strong>peers• Must enjoy difficult tasks <strong>an</strong>d assignments<strong>an</strong>d carry them out with real enthusiasm• Must focus on quality at all times


Qualities needed for success• Excellent inter-personal skills• Ability to interface with students, peers,academic <strong>an</strong>d industrial colleagues• Genuine desire to make lastingcontributions to students’ careers,institutional visibility <strong>an</strong>d pr<strong>of</strong>ession on <strong>an</strong>international scale• Willingness if required to sacrifice personalgains in some inst<strong>an</strong>ces


Qualities required-contd• <strong>Academic</strong>s must uphold highest ethicalst<strong>an</strong>dards- also must become role models• Must not hold bias <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong>y kind• Must have logical mind, strong motivation• Must develop critical thinking skills while beingcreative at all times <strong>an</strong>d in all tasks- teaching,research or service• Must possess a global outlook• Must take pride in peers’ <strong>an</strong>d students’ successas a measure <strong>of</strong> own accomplishment


Ethics- a key issue• Increased global competition c<strong>an</strong> lead totemptation to employ undesirable me<strong>an</strong>s tosucceed superficially- highly undesirable trait!• Ethical behavior is a must in teaching, research<strong>an</strong>d service• Always give due credit, never claim credit forothers’ work (present or prior, here orelsewhere!)• Ethics c<strong>an</strong> make or break a career!


A list <strong>of</strong> desirable traits for <strong>an</strong> Ideal<strong>Academic</strong>!• This list is very broad <strong>an</strong>d long- not allacademics or academics-toto-be c<strong>an</strong> possess alldesired traits. Aim to have as m<strong>an</strong>y as possible!• Possesses: Resourcefulness, initiative, keeninterest <strong>an</strong>d motivation , deep <strong>an</strong>d currentknowledge <strong>of</strong> field, self-learning learning ability etc.• Attracts respect <strong>of</strong> peers <strong>an</strong>d students, valuestime, makes contributions to institution,pr<strong>of</strong>ession ,society etc• Is committed, hardworking, excellentcommunicator, leader not follower, a desirableteam member, etc


How c<strong>an</strong> one measure academicsuccess ?• No magic measurement scale accepted universally!• You know it when you see it!• Highly subjective judgment –based on objective criteriacommonly listed by institutions• Various criteria for teaching, research <strong>an</strong>d servicecontributions- a weigted average is what really counts.Different institutions give different weights to each- bestto try to excel in all• Difficult but feasible!• See websites <strong>of</strong> well known institutions <strong>an</strong>d visit criteriafor promotion <strong>an</strong>d tenure for details!


Some criteria <strong>of</strong> success• Each individual may have a different list –basically mustmeet one’s s own criteria first!• Teaching: Student <strong>an</strong>d peer evaluations, past students’perform<strong>an</strong>ce , authorship <strong>of</strong> texts etc• Research: More obvious: publications in archival peerreviewed journals, international conferences, invitationsto give keynotes, plenary lectures, seminars,workshops ,consult etc, editorships, monographs,h<strong>an</strong>dbooks , patents international awards <strong>of</strong> recognitionetc, international pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>an</strong>d recognition- focus onquality <strong>an</strong>d not qu<strong>an</strong>tity. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong>past research students.• Above list is not all-inclusive


Closing Remarks• Presents some personal viewpoints on what <strong>an</strong> ideal <strong>an</strong>dreal academic should be like• No one is a superm<strong>an</strong>- don’t t expect all qualities in oneindividual.• Some qualities are absolutely necessary e.g. ethical,willingness to work hard, good communication skills etc.Others are highly desirable• Some traits must pre-exist exist prior to taking up <strong>an</strong>academic position; others will follow with goodmentorship <strong>an</strong>d commitment to excellence.• Good academic environment must be provided byinstitutions if they wish to excel themselves. <strong>Academic</strong>smake the institution!


Some traits <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> Ideal Researcher/Research Student• M<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> the same characteristics expected<strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> academic are also desirable for <strong>an</strong>ideal researcher/research student• Not all traits c<strong>an</strong> be found in oneindividual• Some are prerequisites, some are co-requisites while others must developunder proper mentorship <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> IdealMentor!


Some desirable traits- A list• Has inititaive• Is resourceful• Is motivated• Is slef-starterstarter• Is self-learnerlearner• Is logical• Is ethical• Is critical in thinking processes
