The profileproduct maintains the same chemical and mechanical resistancequalities as the anodized versions with an aesthetic brightappearance which make it similar to gilt or chromed surfaces.Hot ExtrusionExtrusion processes involving Stainless steel are subject totremendous pressure and heat but are still dimensionally stableand maintain the high finish, wear and resistance of rolled profiles.The brushing & mid-polishing finish process is obtained throughquartz-fibre nylon rotary brushes which create the matt effecton the profiles visible surfaces but leave the characteristicsunchanged.Stainless steel - 304 GradeSteel belonging to the AUSTINTITE Category which composesthe most popular alloy aggregate for a performing product. It isresistant to the most commonly used chemicals, but it may spot ordarken on the top surface. In such cases, it is easily buffed out witha conventional polishing product to bring it back to its originalshine and can be cleaned with powerful cleaning agents.Stainless Steel – 316 GradeAs belonging to the same category, this alloy aggregate comprisesof Nickel, Chrome and Molybdenum. The latter conferring anexcellent resistance to the harsher conditions such as the presenceof Chlorine and Salt concentrates.Powder Coated AluminiumThe powder coating procedure starts with a chrome-phosphatepre-treatment to proceed then with a polyester powder base coatthrough electrostatic method. This results in an elevated toleranceto atmospheric agents and UV stabilization. The entire visiblesurface undergoes an average 60 micron coating. In addition, thecolour fastness by heat impression, supplies a further guaranteedresistance to mechanical impact and chemical aggression.Stainless Steel – Cold RollingStainless Steel profiles are produced through a cold rollingprocedure with a steady thickness control. They differ from thecorrespondent Brass or Aluminium profile version manufacturedwith the hot extrusion processes of which they maintainnevertheless, the application and dimensional characteristics.Stainless steel is effectively resistant to high mechanicalsolicitations and is particularly indicated for the chemical, foodprocessing and hospital environments to meet the stringentstandards of hygiene, durability and chemical resistancerequirements.BrassBrass profiles are characterized by a high tolerance to mechanicalstress which promotes them as highly recommended for flooringand coverings with intense transit, like industrial applications, andcan be used in correspondence to expansion joints. Profiles aremanufactured either from hot extrusion or cold rolling processes,with a steady sheet thickness control.Brass offers a high resistance to chemical agents normallypresent during ceramic tile laying. If there is a constant presenceof humidity, the Brass section may start oxidation, resultingin a slight darkening. Surfaces can be easily restored with aconventional polishing product to bring back to its original shine.Polished BrassVulcan brass extrusions are finished with special buffing machineswhich enhance the natural shine of the material without alteringthe mechanical properties. Over time there may be a slightoxidation but this will be easily restored to its original condition bythe use of a standard polishing product.Chromed BrassThe chrome finish effect is realised through a galvanic processwhich confers a Stainless Steel like shine to a brass profile. Thevisual impact is appreciated and the overall appearance gains fromit. Ground Surface Indicators (GSIs) are used wherepedestrians with impaired vision need alerting toimpending hazards and help with directional guidance.Individual VTac studs or, corduroy bars in stainlesssteel or brass can be used internally or externally forretrofitting. They do not detract from the attractivenessof the floor but rather enhance the look. The surroundingfloor surface shows between the individual GSIsgiving a superior architectural appearance. Referenceto “guidance via underfoot surface change signals”,conforms to DDA guidelines.Brass and stainless steel GSIs are solid grooved, withan optional non-slip nylon or photo-luminescent insertfor quality emergency walkways to benefit everyone.These studs are very suitable for worn stairs wherea straight line edge is not possible. Try it and see.Colour contrast valuesLuminescent contrast of Ground Surface Indicators(GSIs) is the difference in the amount of lightreflected from the base surface. These bars are based on the Current standard sizes that arerequested for alerting users as to level changes, especially on stairwells.Whilst there is a difficulty being able to apply all the current legislationto Listed and Heritage buildings, the material that these products aremanufactured from are much more sympathetic with the character that thesebuildings portray. They have been found to be suitable for this application.*(*These decisions are subject to the approval from the Area listed buildingsofficer, and the client and tenant usage.)The fitting of these bars is guaranteed by the hidden studs along the length,underside (at point A) and a recess for the adhesive (at point B) to ensurethat there is no clack when the material is trodden on. The cross section of(C) shows the extra legs depth down the length of a carpet bar. These giveproduct stability around a central fixing.It is important that all DDA work is set out in accordance with the setguidelines to maintain regular consistent underfoot signals.Set out plates are available from Vulcan to assist in the correct dimensioning.Specification ExampleCorduroy or Blister Level Change Warning treatment to be provided by retro-fitting of 400(+/-)x20x6mm raised Stud or Bar fittings as manufactured by Vulcan Architectural. These are to befitted to 50mm spacing and, as per the guidance notes produced in accordance with DDA/PartM Regulations, to a depth of 800mm starting 400mm back from top/bottom of step/slope and400mm only on landing/turning areas. If steps/slopes are open sided, allowance is to be made forcoverage 400mm beyond the width of the steps each side. fitting studs & barsSubstrate preparation is of the utmost importance. Clean, dry & free ofany contaminants gives a satisfactory long lasting adhered bond. Vulcanrecommend to use a 2 part adhesion system at all times. All studs can beretrofitted. Fitting on stair edges prevents wearing of carpet on the frontleading edge. See page 23 for diagram of screw fixing through tactile bars (D).As always, compatibility between substrate and adhesive should be tested ona small unseen area to ensure suitability. Manufacturers’ recommendationand instruction should always be followed. Vulcan supply a large range of Tactile Plates in GRP (external), Rubber (internal), &individual Bars and Blisters in Stainless and Brass.Any plates or areas for tactile products should be marked out and constructed in 400mmsquare modules. The surfaces of these GRP Tactile products are a C25 pedestrian grit.Normally buff in colour to be a variant from pavement/walkway blacktop. PVC (polyvinylchloride)Used only in interior situations. It passes the BS 5395 test of low risk of slipping in dry conditions.Available in 20 different colours, and suitable for DDA work. A flexible product, which is a matttexture finish, should be attached with an appropriate adhesive system and cleaned with a neutralcleaner, as more powerful chemicals will cause damage.PVC is unaffected by water but should not be used in wet areas due to an increase in slippage anddamage to the adhesive system. Dark colours may fade after prolonged exposure to sunlight. It isa non conductive material but still affected by expansion and contraction.
