The Forbes Health Foundation is pleased to
be able to financially support the Hospital’s
physical expansion and addition of new
services. The families and individuals in our
service area rely on Forbes for high quality,
high-tech care in a state-of-the-art facility.
In support of the needs of our patients
today and tomorrow, the Forbes Health
Foundation has raised and provided funds
for a number of projects.
The Foundation approved $367,500
toward the addition of nine new treatment
rooms to Forbes Regional Hospital’s Emergency
Room, which will take it from 29 to 38
beds. This one-million-dollar expansion,
which will be completed by December, will
allow us to provide faster, more specialized
care to the patients we serve. With the closure
of UPMC Braddock and Excela’s Jeannette
Hospital, we expect Emergency Department
visits next year to climb from 46,000 to
55,000, and are proactively preparing for
that growth.
Staying current with technology is key to
providing high quality care. To that end, the
Foundation provided funding this year for

Walter Chebatoris Jr. lived a life filled with
love and accomplishments. He was a husband
and a father, a son and a brother, a railroader by
trade, and the kind of guy people relied on in
Pittsburgh’s Sheraden neighborhood.
He was also a veteran who held his World
War II service close to his heart. The Army
drafted him in 1942 and he served as chief clerk
at a military hospital in Devises, England, about
50 miles outside of London. The experience
affected him so strongly that he and his wife
returned to Devises many years later to visit the
site of the former hospital and to reconnect
with friends.
Walter died Sept. 26 at Forbes Hospice, comfortable and surrounded by
his loving family: Lucille, his wife of 61 years; and children Mark, Kurt and
Mary Jo. As one of the nation’s pioneer hospice programs, Forbes Hospice has
led the way in improving care at the end of life and continues to reach out to
meet the changing needs of the population. Forbes Hospice has launched a
program that aims to honor veterans such as Walter as they face the final
weeks and months of their lives. One aspect of the program is matching the
patient with a volunteer who is also a veteran, engaging the patient in conversation
about the years spent in service to our country and finding other ways
to honor the patient’s military service.
A second component of the program is journaling to capture veterans’
war experiences in the form of written legacies. A Forbes Hospice volunteer,
who also is a professional writer, visits with the veteran and takes notes on
their conversations. She then writes an article based on those conversations
and presents it to the family. The benefits here are twofold: the veteran has
the comfort of a visitor who is interested in his or her stories, and the family
gains new insight into their loved one’s life experiences in an article that they
can share with other family members.
Forbes Hospice Director Maryanne Fello said Forbes Hospice always
strives to meet the unique needs of each person, and with so many veterans
living in southwestern Pennsylvania, this special effort to reach veterans is a
natural fit.

Breast cancer is the second most
common malignancy to strike
women and reducing time from
diagnosis to treatment is crucial
to successful outcomes.

“I am deeply moved by this special program we have developed to honor
our dying veterans,” said Ms. Fello. “It’s our turn to serve those who have
served our country so well.”
Kurt Chebatoris grew up listening to his dad tell tales of World War II, and
enlisted in the Marines in 1977. He now serves in the Army Reserves and did
a tour in Iraq. Having a chance to retell his story was tremendously important
to his father, Kurt says.
The Chebatoris’ experience inspired leaders at Forbes Hospice to create the
veterans program.
“Being part of the military is such a tremendous, life-changing experience.
Most veterans, as they get older, find it is something they want to talk about,”
he said. “How do you help veterans in hospice?” Kurt asked. “Let them tell
their stories. I think you will find that every story is different.”
Lucille Chebatoris knew the importance of military service to Walt, and appreciated
the way Forbes Hospice honored the man who was the love of her
life. “I used to say to him, ‘Oh Walt, you’d find the good in the devil,
wouldn’t you,’” she said with a smile.
“I could not have asked for better parents,” Kurt echoed. The care Forbes
Hospice provided his father was exceptional, he said. “They made it extra easy
on all of us, considering the circumstances. I felt very comfortable that when
we weren’t there, he was being taken care of.”
Plates With Purpose Raise
Money for Forbes Hospice
In 2004, Forbes Hospice Director, Maryanne Fello,
contacted her friend, Mary Irwin-Scott of Riverside
Design Group, to design a plate as a gift for Forbes
Hospice’s 25th Anniversary. What was originally
intended to be a one-time partnership has flourished
into a long-term fundraising project for
Forbes Hospice.
�e plates, created with recycled glass, feature a butterfly,
which is the national symbol for Hospice. �ey
were presented to the founders of Forbes Hospice at the 25th Anniversary celebration.
After seeing people’s positive reactions to the plates, Maryanne saw an opportunity
for ongoing fundraising.
Six years later, the proceeds from the sale of these beautiful plates has raised
thousands of dollars for Forbes Hospice. After seeing the success of this partnership,
Riverside Design Group reached out to other local organizations and Plates
With Purpose was born. �ey have created unique designs for 11 other Pittsburgh
non-profits.

Digital Mammography
Unit and Comprehensive
Breast Cancer Program

With the addition of new technology and
a Breast Care Coordinator, Forbes Regional
Hospital offers patients comprehensive
breast imaging and treatment services.
These changes are part of Forbes’ continued
commitment to offer the best care possible
to patients in their own community.
Forbes has installed a second digital mammography
unit. The GE Essential Digital
Mammography unit is a full field digital
unit with a large field view and is considered
the gold standard in digital mammography imaging.
In addition to offering patients state-of-the-art breast imaging technology,
Forbes Regional Hospital has added services to support patients in
what can be an incredibly difficult situation. “Our goal through imaging
and coordination of services is to provide a pathway for quicker
diagnosis and more timely treatment,” says Maureen Bidula, MD,
Vice Chair, Radiology, at Forbes Regional Hospital.
Forbes Health Foundation was awarded an $84,000 grant from the
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh Affiliate. With this funding,
Forbes has hired a Breast Care Coordinator. In this role, Karen
Schwaderer, RN, BSN, OCN ® , assists women who have abnormal
findings on a mammogram or ultrasound. Karen helps patients navigate
through the health care system by coordination of follow-up care with
specialists such as surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.
Schwaderer says that patients love this service since it gives them
someone to reach out to in a very stressful time. “In the past, patients
were left to their own devices to make follow-up care appointments,
which is incredibly overwhelming,” she said. “I help them navigate the
system and also give them a sounding board to voice their concerns and
fears.” She also facilitates finding financial assistance for patients who are
uninsured or underinsured.
Breast Care Coordinators are a fairly new service being offered at
hospitals, but one that is quickly growing throughout the nation.
“With disjointed health care, Breast Care Coordinators have become
imperative to helping patients identify resources and plan their care,”
says Schwaderer. In addition to follow up care, she can also assist
patients in locating more specialized services such as genetic counseling,
lymphedema care, and plastic surgery.
Reese Jackson Named
Permanent CEO
After five months as the
interim president and
CEO at Forbes Regional
Hospital, Reese Jackson
has accepted this position
on a permanent basis. Mr.
Jackson is an experienced
healthcare executive, and Reese Jackson
his leadership is proving very valuable.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Jackson
spent time consulting health systems on operational
excellence, and had previously
served as the chief operating officer of the
Valley Health System, president of Winchester
Medical Center (Winchester, Virginia),
the senior vice president of
operations of the Saint Francis Health System,
and as administrator of Saint Francis
Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition,
he has held other important operational and
business planning roles at the Spohn Health
System (Corpus Christi, Texas), Santa Rosa
(California) Memorial Hospital, and the St.
Joseph Health System (Orange, California).
He earned his bachelor of arts degree from
Texas Tech University, a master's of health
administration from the Medical College of
Virginia and his Juris Doctor from the University
of Richmond.
Mr. Jackson will continue to guide Forbes
Regional through the execution of its strategic
plan, which is aimed at growth in the
eastern suburbs.
More than 200 Golfers Play in First
System-Wide Golf Classic
More than 200 golfers played in the first
WPAHS Golf Classic held at the Pittsburgh
Field Club on September 20.
This outing was the first System event,
allowing the participating hospitals to pool
resources and share profits. Forbes Regional
Hospital is among the four beneficiary
hospitals, which also include Allegheny
General Hospital, Alle-Kiski Medical
Center, and West Penn Hospital. Several
members of the Forbes Health Foundation
Board had foursomes at the event.

for Lecture Series
The Podiatry Foundation of Pittsburgh has awarded Forbes Health Foundation
and The Foot and Ankle Institute of Pittsburgh a $48,000 grant to help
to support the Scott Alter, DPM Memorial Lecture Series. The Podiatry
Foundation has supported this lecture series since 2008. Drs. Alan R. Catanzariti,
Director of Residency Training Programs, and Robert W. Mendicino,
Chief of the Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery, oversee the program.
The 2010-2011 Lecture Series will offer six educational programs from September
2010 through June 2011 that enable foot and ankle surgeons, podiatrists,
and residents to stay abreast of the latest developments in podiatric
medicine. It also offers a convenient opportunity to obtain the CME credits
required of podiatrists and other medical professionals to maintain licensure.
“We are sincerely grateful to the Podiatry Foundation of Pittsburgh for its
support of these important programs,” Dr. Mendicino said. “The Scott Alter,
DPM Memorial Lecture Series is an important educational resource for Pittsburgh
area foot and ankle surgeons, podiatrists, residents, and others.”
The lecture series offers cutting edge topics in foot and ankle surgery, such as
management strategies for ankle arthritis, diabetic complications, common
problems treating the foot and ankle, and new technology and innovations.
The program has raised funds or received grants of nearly $1,000,000 over
the last decade allowing for such programs and/or minimizing capital or other
expenses for its training program.
