In Loving Memory of
My Mother
I envisioned a hospice as a demonic domicile filled with malevolent phantoms and death.
The eight days in March 2007 that my mother, Anne, spent at Forbes Hospice, however,
taught me that this image was rooted in my own fears of death, not in reality. I discovered
that Forbes Hospice is a home. Its family of caring nurses, aides, counselors, and administrators
welcomed my father and me and turned my mother’s final days into ones of peace
and dignity.
The lobby wall of the hospice contains a tree of life; each golden leaf bears the name of a
loved one who passed away at the hospice. I initially shuddered at the hideous oxymoron
of “tree of life” and “hospice,” but I quickly realized that Forbes Hospice does emphasize
life by celebrating the patients and their loved ones.

As I prepared to enter the hospice, I braced myself
for the suffocating medicinal smell that I have always
associated with a senior care facility. Much to
my surprise and relief, I found myself inhaling the
appetizing aromas of soup. The hospice kitchen became
the place where my dad and I went to sip a
cup of tea, indulge in a homemade treat, heat up a
meal, or converse with other visitors who understood
how we felt.
We also visited the meditation room to find nourishment for our souls. The room’s simple
furniture and collection of supportive reading material provided my father and me with
a better perspective of my mother’s final days. In this quiet room, we could take deep,
soothing breaths that enabled us to think and reflect.
Like the rest of the hospice, my mother’s room had a home-like quality to it. Covering
my mother’s bed was a colorful afghan that some hospice angel had crocheted. The nurses
or aides always dressed my mother in a fresh nightgown (we favored the pink silk one),
combed her hair, and smoothed her chapped lips with ointment. These nurses and aides
spoke softly to my mother as they gently turned and massaged her back and legs. They
never allowed my mother to suffer any physical pain. Even though my mother could not
respond, they still treated her as a vibrant woman worthy of respect.
When my mother died, a hospice counselor came into
the room, held our hands, and led us in a prayer. The
nurse supported me as I made the requisite phone calls
to the funeral home and family. A week after my
mother’s passing, a representative of the hospice called
to see how my dad and I were doing. It was then that
we connected with Kevin Henry, the grief counselor who
embodies the professionalism and compassion of Forbes
Hospice and its staff.
On March 21, 2008, the one year anniversary of my
mom’s death, my dad and I added a golden leaf to the tree
of life. The leaf is in memory of my mother – and in
honor of Forbes Hospice and its nurses, counselors, volunteers,
and administrators.

and the Great Depression. There
are striking similarities between 2008 and
1974, when the U.S. economy was reeling
from raging gas shortages caused by the
Arab oil embargo. Charitable giving in
1974 fell by 5.4 percent, adjusted for inflation
and 5.7 percent last year. Unemployment
by the end of both 1974 and 2008
was 7.2 percent. In both 1975 and 2009 it
reached 9 percent.
If the comparisons hold up, The Chronicle
of Philanthropy predicts that giving
won’t recover to 2007 levels until 2012 at
best, assuming the recession ends this year.
Charitable giving in 2007 rose by 3.9 percent
from the previous year, a sharp contrast
to the decline of 5.7 percent in 2008,
the first decline in years. Giving to healthcare
fell 10 percent and represents 7 percent
of all charitable giving in the U.S.
The Association of Healthcare Philanthropy
recently cited a report by investment
bank Shattuck Hammond Partners and The
Charter Group consulting firm which noted
that funds raised by non-profit health services
could conceivably decline 15 to 20 percent
over the next few years.
Giving to Forbes Health Foundation in
fiscal year 2008 which ended June 30 is
somewhat congruous with national giving
trends. The total amount our loyal benefactors
donated was $963,960. This is
greater than the amount raised two years
prior, the year before the recession began
but still less than last year. Donors seem to
understand that the causes they support at
Forbes Hospice and Forbes Hospital have
not diminished in a challenged economy.

The trend we see is that donors are
still giving regularly, some in smaller
amounts and many are giving in greater
amounts to cover the decline from others.
Forbes Health Foundation has altered
its development plan to adjust to the
new economy and the growing programs
at both Forbes Hospice and the
Hospital. Direct mail appeals which are
targeted for donor acquisition have been
reduced. Planned/deferred giving and
major gift opportunities continue to be
enhanced.
We will be calling to meet with you,
our long-term and cherished supporters
over the next months to discuss much
needed programs that are not funded
through reimbursement from insurance
or Medicare. These are programs that
make a difference in the care our patients
need.
One such program is Palliative Care
Education for hospital caregivers and
family members so that both are more
informed on the benefits that hospice
care provides a terminally ill patient and
their family. Many patients pass away
without the family even understanding
the merits or availability of hospice services.
Thank you for staying loyal to the patients
we serve during your own financial
challenges. Your commitment and
dedication has helped us to provide immeasurable
service to patients and their
families over the past year, many who
are suffering much greater hardships
than a declining portfolio.

Oncology Wall of Hope
Recognizes the Heroes
Forbes’ new Oncology Wall of Hope is a place where family members, patients, employees
and friends recognize that when courage, genius and generosity hold hands, all things are
possible.
Your gift to the Forbes Oncology Fund demonstrates your commitment to the battle
against cancer – in your own community. Your gift can be earmarked to honor special occasions
in your loved ones’ lives — holidays, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays, etc. – or to
celebrate the memory of someone special. Donor recognition plaques are in increments of
$200, $500 and $1,000 whereby a special message to commemorate or honor a loved one is
engraved on individual plaques in the shape of colorful flowers, butterflies and clouds respectfully
that are placed on the wall surrounding the granite title plate.
Donations to the Oncology Wall of Hope are used for improvements on the Oncology
Floor as specified by Arlene Lis, BSN, the nurse manager of Oncology. She needs your help
to make some vital improvements that will enhance patient comfort. Furnishings in the family
lounge must be replaced, and she would like to be able to equip all of the patient rooms
with microwave ovens and refrigerators. She also wants to create a Family Library with online

new radiology suite that will house a new 64-slice
CT scanner, in addition to the Hospital's current
8-slice scanner. PA State Senator Sean Logan was
instrumental in helping Forbes to secure the government
funds.

One of the most powerful scanners available
today, the 64-slice CT captures amazingly detailed
and accurate images of the heart, lungs, and arteries
in just seconds with minimal discomfort and
risk for patients. In addition to Coronary CTA,
the new scanner will provide high-quality imaging
and visualization of complex fractures, spine,
joints, vascular structures and other organs.
Computed tomography creates images by taking
a series of X-rays in tiny slices. Shorter slices yield
more detailed images. The state-of-the-art Somatom
Definition AS 64-slice CT scanner by
Siemens at Forbes delivers unmatched image quality
and allows for more precise diagnosis of car-
diovascular disease. With a short scan time of just seconds, the 64-slice CT scanner can
capture images of organs before the organs move, dramatically improving image quality.
In addition to upgrading the Radiology Department, the new scanner and suite will
bring CT services closer to the Emergency Department and help provide patients with
early detection to certain coronary and other life threatening issues. "CT Angiography
(CTA) is helpful as an initial non-invasive look at the coronary vessels for many patients,"
said Maureen Bidula, MD, Vice Chair of Radiology at Forbes. "If the coronary CTA is
normal, patients may be able to avoid further invasive testing. Coronary CTA may also
detect heart disease earlier, by revealing the formation of soft plaque before any narrowing
of the arteries has occurred."
Dr. Bidula also added that the scanner will give the department the ability to rapidly
scan and immediately post process images. This will help in delivering a quicker diagnosis
to patients who visit the Emergency Department at Forbes.

had a CT scan and she made me feel so comfortable getting this procedure done.
She is a wonderful person.

Planting Seeds of Compassion
at Forbes Hospice
Forbes Hospice has become somewhat of an oasis in the city thanks to the generosity and
creativity of a local landscape architect.
Mark McKenzie, owner of Landscape Architectural Services, LLC, recently donated more
than $8,000 of professional services to create the Forbes Hospice Compassion Garden. He
designed and installed the garden so that Hospice families would have a place to go for a
respite from the emotional hardships of having a loved one in hospice care. Mr. McKenzie
has a history of similar donations in and around the greater Pittsburgh region and refers to
this as his “philanthropy.”
The garden is both functional and aesthetic with ample seating, strategically placed boulders,
and shrubs and perennials planted to ensure seasonal interest.
“Before the garden was installed in the fall of 2008, there was no place for people to sit
outside,” said Mr. McKenzie. “I wanted to provide a comforting and convenient area outdoors
where someone could get away from it all to be quiet and reflect.”

Mr. McKenzie was personally aware of the need for such a garden.
In addition to serving as a volunteer at Forbes Hospice, his father
and aunt were both cared for there, and his mother has also been a
Hospice volunteer for 28 years.
Although this garden has been in the planning stages for many
years, the first step was in spring of 2006 when two of his father’s favorite
trees were planted in his memory.
“It really is remarkable,” said Maryanne Fello, Director, Forbes
Hospice. “It had been a longstanding goal of ours to do something
like this, and the Compassion Garden really creates a kind of oasis
for families to go when they need a break. Mark has shared how he
sees the world with us at Forbes Hospice, and we are very grateful
for his vision.”
Mark's vision remains incomplete, however. He added that the
garden is an ongoing project and has now taken on a life of its own,
which officially qualifies it as living art.
Mr. McKenzie still donates his time and creativity working with
local artists and intends to continuously improve the space. “I’m
there frequently to do what is needed; be it planting, watering, pruning
or promoting the garden to Hospice families,” he said. “It’s invariably
a source of conversation. I’ve met so many great people and
families working on this project. It’s my little spot and it comforts
me.”

Forbes Regional Welcomes New CEO
Gary J. Strong assumed the role of President and Chief Executive
Officer of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional
Campus on June 8.
Mr. Strong most recently served as Executive Vice President
and Chief Administrative Officer with the Allina Health System
in Minneapolis, a $2.7 billion, 24,000-employee health system.
During his tenure, Allina implemented a series of system-wide
performance improvement initiatives.
Prior to joining Allina, Mr. Strong served at Fairview Health
Services in Minneapolis, holding positions of increased responsibility
over an eight-year period. As Senior Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer at Fairview, he managed all operating
Gary Strong entities of a $2.3 billion, 18,000-employee health system. The
system included the University of Minnesota Hospital and Children’s Hospital; six community
hospitals and a 300-employee physician group.
Mr. Strong began his career as Director of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in
Topeka, Kansas, and subsequently held the positions of Vice President of Operations and
Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Millard Fillmore Health System in Buffalo, NY, and Vice
President of Operations and CIO at Via Christi Health System in Wichita, Kansas.
He is a graduate of Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, and received his master’s degree
in business administration at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY.
Giving Can Maximize
TAX SAVINGS
Most charitable gifts to Forbes Health Foundation are made in the form of cash or checks
and can eliminate or reduce income tax on up to one-half of your adjusted gross income
(AGI). Donations in excess of that amount can result in tax savings in as many as five future
tax years. The higher your tax bracket, the more you save.
STOCKS, BONDS, MUTUAL FUNDS AND REAL ESTATE
Gifts of securities (individual stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares) and certain other assets
that have increased in value since you have owned them can result in even greater tax savings.
Not only are such gifts generally deductible from income tax at full value if owned for
longer than one year, they also enable you to bypass capital gains tax that would have been
due on the sale. Such gifts can eliminate tax on up to 30 percent of your AGI.
Donating appreciated real estate or other personal property can mean that a full deduction
is realized free of the capital gains tax.
DEPRECIATED ASSETS
If you own an investment that has decreased in value, you may consider selling the investment
and making a charitable gift of the cash proceeds. This creates a loss you may be able
to deduct from other taxable income along with the amount of the cash contribution. In
some cases, the combined amount of the deductible loss and the charitable deduction may
total more than the current value of the asset.
RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS AND IRAS
If you are over the age of 59½ and have an IRA or other tax-favored retirement account,
you may prefer to withdraw an amount sufficient to fund your charitable gifts for the year.
Although you will normally report the income on your tax return, when you itemize your
deductions, you are entitled to a corresponding deduction for the amount of the gift. This
can result in a “wash” for tax purposes, with no tax owed on the amount withdrawn.

In the Words of Our Patients…
I recently was diagnosed with breast cancer by
the doctors at Forbes. I wanted to write this
letter to thank the people involved in my care
and let you know what caliber of employees you
have. I know you always hear from the people
who are unhappy with their care, but probably
don’t hear from the rest of us often enough.
First of all, I wanted to thank Dr. Frank
Perrone. When I had my mammogram, Dr.
Perrone reviewed my films and saw something
very small that he wanted to get a better look at.
He could very easily have decided to just have
me come back in three months so he could get a
better look, but instead he persevered and had 15
views taken, most of which were done by Karen
Ventosa. She did her best to do her job without
hurting me and trying to make me comfortable,
considering we were in some very weird
positions.
He then referred me for an ultrasound, which
was done by Cara Pattock. Cara was extremely

She and Dr. Maureen Bidula did a biopsy and
both showed concern for me and made sure I
understood what they were doing and why and
tried very hard to put me at ease about the whole
situation. I never felt like I was “just another
body” with any of these people and truly felt
they care about their patients.

professional, but also cared about how I was
feeling and made a bad situation bearable.

I brought my husband to the Emergency Room as
he was experiencing chest pain. He was taken to the
back immediately while my daughter and I got him
registered. Registration took only minutes and then
we were taken back to the room where my husband
was. As soon as we walked in, Dr. Cameron Bobbett
said the EKG showed he was indeed having a heart
attack and did we have a cardiologist we would like
to use.
We asked for Dr. Michael Steinfeld who within minutes
arrived to his room and agreed he was having a
heart attack and needed to go straight to the Cath
Lab. The ER staff worked quickly and efficiently to
get my husband up to the Cath Lab, keeping us informed
the whole time as to what exactly was happening.
Dr. Aashish Dua performed a cath that resulted in
two stents to his right main coronary artery and we
were told he would have to return in a few weeks

I have to commend you on an excellent staff! From
the time we arrived in the ER, went to the Cath Lab
and then to CTICU, everyone was professional, courteous
and genuinely concerned for my husband’s well
being.
My husband was discharged on Thanksgiving Day.
I must say from not only my husband and I but from
my children, their husbands and wives and my grandchildren,
thank you for giving us the most thankful
Thanksgiving Day ever! Without everyone who
played a part in helping treat my husband that morning,
this may have had a very different outcome.
We will be forever grateful for the excellent care he
received at Forbes Regional Campus!

These donations help to provide a variety of services including:

In the Words of Our
Patients…
I wanted to take a moment to compliment you on the excellent
staff you have in the Women’s and Infants’ Care Center. During
my labor, my nurses Bobbi Lloyd and Joanna Jordan were both
caring and very professional. They answered all my questions and
helped calm me through a very scary experience. They reassured
me of any worries that I had and made me feel assured that I was
receiving the best possible care for my daughter and myself.
After delivering, my nurses Sheri Beckett, Barb Waite, Barb Turriziani
and JoAnn Rocknage were absolutely wonderful. They
took the time to explain infant care and were especially patient
and helpful with teaching me to breastfeed my daughter. I felt
that they took the time to instruct me on what I needed to know
to be successful after returning home from the hospital. Even
after I returned home and had questions, I was able to call and
speak with Naydine Hanna who offered her support, advice and
assistance.
You have a wonderful, supportive, and knowledgeable maternity
staff that makes their patients feel as though they are receiving
the most individualized care based on their needs and the
needs of their new baby.

Forbes Touches Lives

On March 24, 2004, a husband and his wife had the surprise of a lifetime while visiting
family in Monroeville from their home in Beijing, China. The two were expecting
their first child, but not for weeks. The two had many uncertain feelings of how life
would change after having their first child, but above all, being without health insurance
and having no means to pay for the procedure, was even more unsettling to them.
During the visit, the wife went into labor and delivered a healthy baby boy on the
Forbes Labor and Delivery Unit. Recently, the Forbes Health Foundation received a
phone call from a Chinese translator calling on behalf of the proud father. The translator
went on to explain that the family was treated so well at Forbes and to this day had
not forgotten the generosity he and his family received during their stay. The translator
added that the family was in a much better financial situation and wanted to repay the
favor. One week later, a $5,000 gift to the Forbes Health Foundation for Forbes Regional
was made in the son’s name.
Each year, there are many families just like this who are unable to pay for their treatment.
The Forbes ER has never turned a patient away due to an inability to pay. In Fiscal
Year 2008 alone, Forbes provided $14.5 million in uncompensated care to the
community, up 33 percent from the previous Fiscal Year.
