One might expect
that a weakening economy would affect
donations to charitable programs. While
some reports indicate that this is imminent
on a national level, regarding overall giving
to Forbes Health Foundation it just isn’t so.
Donations to Forbes Health Foundation
are up 55 percent from last year from
roughly $958,000 to $1.4 million.
A study of 72 large philanthropic organizations
released by Target Analytics in
July showed that the number of donors and
revenue declined nationally from the first
quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008.
This is the first decline in donors and revenue
since they had been tabulated in 2001.
The index tracks gifts of less than $5,000.
Congruously, the number of donors to
Forbes Health Foundation in this giving
range has declined slightly, compensated
for by an increase in the amount of each
individual donation.
This summer, Giving USA released its
2008 report on giving which reflects donations
of all amounts across the US, showing
that Americans donated $306 billion
in 2007 – up only 3.9 percent from the
previous year. Experts said the modest
growth may be short-lived, as many charities
reported concerns that rising gas prices,
declining investments and turmoil in the
housing and credit markets could hamper
their fundraising.
Religious organizations received the biggest
share of donations, accounting for 33.4
percent of the total followed by Education
and Human Services. Health organizations
ranked fourth at $23 billion or 7.6 percent
of the $306 billion. This represents growth
of 5.4 percent from the previous year.

Kevin Bennett had been having minor chest pain for about a month but didn’t tell his wife,
Brenda, because he didn’t want to believe it was worth the worry. After all, this 44-year old,
six-foot-four-inch man was able to operate heavy equipment all day for Dominion and return
home to work his cattle farm in Palestine, West Virginia until 10:30 p.m. every night.
“You just think it is your age or whatever,” said Kevin. “You don’t want to believe it’s
your heart.”
In May, Dominion scheduled Kevin for training in the McKeesport area of Pittsburgh,
a four hour ride from his farm. Kevin said that assignment placed him in a situation that
saved his life.
While in training, the severity of his chest pain erupted and traveled down both arms.
At that point he knew he was in trouble and asked the trainer to take him to an emergency
room. The trainer brought Kevin to Forbes.
“I will say that it could not have happened in a better place,” said Kevin. “The people –
the healthcare – not once did I question anything.”
Kevin now chuckles remembering that at first he ‘failed’ every test he received – electrocardiogram,
blood enzymes and stress test. Dr. Abdulrab Aziz performed a heart catheterization
on Kevin in The Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center which opened in March
with the help of $10.4 million from Forbes Health Foundation donors. A stent could not
open Kevin’s coronary arteries.
“When they told me they were going to have to open me up it concerned me a little, but I
knew I was in the right place,” said Kevin.
Brenda, on the other hand was scared. “I felt like I had been hit by a truck when I got the
call,” remembers Brenda. Their two teenage daughters, Kaitlin and Karly were “really scared.”
Dr. Michael Culig, The Dardanell Center’s medical director performed Kevin’s coronary
artery bypass graft surgery. “Dr. Culig was very comforting when he talked to us,” Kevin
said. “He said he had done
several thousand of these.”
What impressed Kevin
the most was that every
morning a team of doctors
and other professionals
would meet in his cardiovascular
intensive care
room to address any
problems, involving him as
part of the process. Any
problems were worked out
before they left the room.
“You know those call
buttons?” Kevin said.
“You don’t need them.”
“It was very important
to us to do everything
we could to help ease Mr.
Bennett’s fears as he was a
long way from home,” said
Dr. Culig.

In comparison presidential campaigns
raised $580 million in 2007 according
to the Federal Election Commission, less
than one quarter of one percent of the
total raised for charitable purposes.
The much-anticipated “Big Transfer of
Wealth” from the baby boomers to their
heirs and charities has begun. Nationally,
charitable bequests rose to more than
$23 billion, an increase of 6.9 percent from
the previous year when bequest gifts had
only risen 5.9 percent across 1991 to 2005.
Charitable bequests at Forbes are up
25 percent to $233,476 for fiscal year 2008.
Forbes Health Foundation received
marked increases in several funds including
Oncology, Gloria Kasey Education, Hospice
Gifts and Hospice Equipment this fiscal
year. These funds are heavily supported
by employees whose donations increased
44 percent over last year for a total of
$65,000.
Two newly created funds have also made
a discernable difference. The new Foot
and Ankle Fund, under the direction of
Dr. Robert Mendicino, provides support
for the Foot and Ankle Residency Program.
The Cardiovascular Operational Excellence
Program entitled Redefining Chronic
CARE is rapidly gaining support from
individual donors. The Highmark
Foundation supported this cutting edge
program in the Ed Dardanell Heart and
Vascular Center with a grant of $262,500.
The program is under the direction of
cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Michael Culig.

Family and friend support for Kevin was not in short order. All the members of his
training class visited him throughout his stay. Dominion accommodated many members
of the Bennett family at a local hotel during his surgery and recovery.
Additionally, Kevin built a collection of personal friendships among the hospital staff
such as his dietary specialist and cardiovascular intensive care nurse. Nurses from the
Emergency Room and Telemetry unit checked on him regularly in the Cardiothoracic
Intensive Care Unit. A custodian from the night shift also stopped by every evening.
“You can tell the people are sincere,” said Kevin.
“The staff wasn’t only concerned about Kevin’s well being, they were concerned about
our whole family as well,” added Brenda.
Four days after the surgery Kevin went home. Two months later he was back to work.
“Dr. Aziz and the entire team in The Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center did a
remarkable job in helping this man resume normal life,” said Dr. Culig.
The need for cardiac rehabilitation was not an issue for Kevin. Tending to heavy-duty
work by day and 200 acres with 42 cattle by night was enough.
“I feel better than I have for a long time,” adds Kevin.
Donors Make a Difference

funded by Forbes Health Foundation donors during the last fiscal year:

Donors to the Forbes Hospice funds have generously
provided a number of program and equipment needs
over the past year that would otherwise not have been
possible. We were able to send staff to national and
international conferences so that they could gain the
latest knowledge in hospice and palliative care. We
provided 2,000 hours of respite care in four and eight
hour increments to families who needed a break from
the intensity of caring for a dying loved one. We were
able to send nurses to preparatory courses in hospice
and palliative care and subsequently afford them the
certification process. In all, we are most grateful to
our kind donors who help us care for our dear patients
and their families every day.

Lucy Rose Michna – A Story of Dedication and Gratitude
Michele Prior will tell you that Lucy Michna was not only her mother, but after the
death of Michele’s father during her teenage years, Lucy became like a mother, father,
sister and best friend all in one.
When Lucy, of Monroeville, was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2001, Michele and
her brother Michael were not sure how to cope. Lucy endured it with grace. After all,
this was a woman who became a widow at 42, went on to work as a bank teller to support
her family, raised two children on her own, and had endured joint replacement and
open heart surgery as well as other medical issues.
“She was a hard working woman of extreme integrity and faith,” said Michele who
lives in Forest Hills with her husband Barry and their two children. “She was mother,
father, grandmother, grandfather and everything to all of us.”
Lucy took pride in her clutter free home and yard and was known to scrub her mailbox
on more than one occasion. Her middle name was Rose and she enjoyed planting
pink rose bushes outside of her game room door.
Toward the end stages of Lucy’s cancer, Michele and Michael made the decision to
engage Forbes Hospice in her care.
“I had worried my whole life about who was going to help take care of my beloved
mom who had cared for us her entire life,” said Michele, a full time pediatric advanced
practice nurse at Allegheny General Hospital. “At Forbes Hospice we had more than
anyone could ever ask for. We had all those angels.”
Forbes Health Foundation donors donated $548,000 to Hospice programs last year.
Michele is grateful to Forbes Hospice for two main reasons. The in-patient unit and
its staff made the end-of-life process something a small family could manage. And they
talked with Lucy about the fact that she was dying when it was too difficult for Michele
and Michael to find the courage.
Those final months included some wonderful memories for Michele on the Forbes
Hospice unit. “The staff deemed my mother ‘Queen Lucy’,” said Michele. “They
treated our family like royalty.”
Michele and Michael arranged events such as a Valentine’s Day party and an alcohol
free happy hour in which the staff and volunteers eagerly participated. Lucy especially
liked the whirl pool spa treatments, back rubs and excursions to play Bingo in other
units of the building.
On March 11, 2007, Lucy Rose Michna passed away. Michele transplanted the rose
bushes from Lucy’s home to her own front yard where they still bloom sweet smelling
roses today.

Hospice Tree of Life.

“Forbes Hospice also took care of me and my brother as well.”

has written a book titled LHF MD: Love,
Humor, Faith: My Destiny – The Making

of the proceeds are being donated to the
Foundation’s Dr. Gloria Kasey Fund in
memory of Dr. Fuge’s friend and colleague
who died of breast cancer in December
2005. Donations from the sale of the book
have totaled $9,465 to date.
“Teaching, caring, helping each other
in our community is the basis for Forbes
Health Foundation,” said Dr. Fuge, a family
practice physician who has worked at
Forbes since 1985. “The gift of this book
and its proceeds to the Foundation is just a
different approach to serving and helping.”

Health System Welcome New CEOs
Christopher T. Olivia, MD, assumed the role of President
and Chief Executive Officer of West Penn Allegheny Health
System on March 17.
Dr. Olivia previously served as President and CEO for
The Cooper Health System (CHS) in Camden, New Jersey
where revenue more than doubled and discharges increased
by over 60 percent during his tenure. He also led The Cooper
University Hospital to the number one ranking in market share
for hospitals in South Jersey and an investment grade financial
rating.
Dr. Olivia earned his undergraduate degree at the
Christopher T. Olivia, MD Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree with
honors and academic distinction from Hahnemann Medical
School. He served his internship at Colombia University’s Morristown Memorial Hospital
Program where he was Intern of the Year. Dr. Olivia also earned an M.B.A. from the
Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dawn Gideon joined The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and
its Forbes Regional Campus as President and Chief Executive
Officer on May 5 with 25 years of diverse experience.
For the last three years, Ms. Gideon was a Managing Director
and Interim Management Group Practice Leader for the Huron
Consulting Group, one of the nation’s largest health-care performance
improvement firms.
Among her many achievements with Huron, Ms. Gideon
served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Restructuring
Executive for Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center in
New York, a $1.7 billion organization.
Ms. Gideon began her career as a planning and marketing
associate with the former Forbes Health System (FHS) where
over 10 years she served as Vice President for Planning and Marketing, Chief Executive
Officer and Executive Director for Forbes Metropolitan Hospital, and Senior Vice President
for Strategic Planning and Chief Operating Officer for FHS.
Ms. Gideon earned both her undergraduate degree and a Master of Public Health degree
from The University of Pittsburgh.

Forbes’ Efforts
to Redefine
Chronic CARE
The Highmark Foundation awarded a
$262,500 grant to the Forbes Health Foundation
to support a new program that uses
manufacturing-based quality principles to
dramatically change the way heart patients
are cared for at The Western Pennsylvania
Hospital – Forbes Regional Campus.
The new program, called Redefining
Chronic CARE, is a three-year concentrated
effort that is changing the organizational
culture by adopting Toyota production
system concepts. St. Vincent College’s
Kennametal Center for Operational
Excellence is teaching, training and
demonstrating the concepts.
The effort is timely as the population
surrounding Forbes Regional grows older
and more vulnerable to heart disease. As
of 2006, 47 percent of people in Forbes’
service area are age 45 or older, compared
to a national average of 37.6 percent.
Congestive heart failure is the leading
cause of admissions to Forbes Regional.
“The Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular
Center at Forbes already has the best
available equipment, facilities and people,”
said Michael Culig, M.D., the Center’s
medical director. “This forward-thinking
grant from the Highmark Foundation
will allow us to build a system aimed
at error-free, complication-free care for
cardiac patients.”
Forbes Health Foundation has raised
a total of $352,000, including physician
and community contributions, toward
the project. Dr. Culig has personally
contributed $60,000 to the project.
At daily meetings, Dardanell Center team
members evaluate outcomes and change
procedures based on staff and patient
feedback. Patients, meanwhile, become
more deeply involved in their own care.
They “own” their medical information
with 24-hour access via a USB device
and have the option to become part of a
Web-based community.

As Murrysville residents, Jerry Loyacona,
DMD and his wife Patti believe that
donating to their community hospital is
an important way of giving back to the
community in which they live.
The Loyacona’s have made The
Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes
Regional Campus an important part of
their family and look to Forbes for all of
their medical needs. Their youngest of
their three children was born at Forbes
and according to the Loyacona’s, they
have always had a very positive experience
at the Hospital.
In 2004, Jerry and Patti decided to
give back to the hospital that had always
been there for them through a generous
gift of $25,000 to the Hospital’s capital
campaign.
“Health care is ever changing and with our donation, we are helping to ensure that
Forbes is providing the most up-to date medical services to our community,” said Dr. Loyacona,
an orthodontist who has been in practice for more than 19 years. “I feel it is important
to give to Forbes because in order for it to grow and continue to provide advanced
services to the patients it serves, we need to help support it.”
“Jerry and Patti have been dedicated to our mission since the Foundation began,” said
Mary Lee Gannon, president and CEO, Forbes Health Foundation. “They see the value
that a full service hospital brings to the quality of life in their community and they have
taken action to insure that their friends, neighbors and family members have access to
quality and comprehensive care.”
According to Mrs. Loyacona, support to the hospital should not only start and stop on
a monetary level. “Not only do I feel that it’s important to give a donation to the Hospital,
but I also feel that donating your time is just as valuable,” said Mrs. Loyacona.
Since giving their gift in 2004, Mrs. Loyacona has contributed her time every year to the
Harmony Ball, serving on the committee and gathering prizes for the event’s silent auction.
She is also very active in the Poinsettias for Patients program, sells raffle tickets and helps
out in any way she can with other Foundation-related activities. “Every little bit helps in
raising funds for the Hospital,” said Mrs. Loyacona.

Giving Can Maximize Tax Savings
Most charitable gifts to Forbes Health Foundation are made in the form of cash
or checks and can eliminate or reduce income tax on up to one-half of your adjusted
gross income (AGI). Donations in excess of that amount can result in tax
savings in as many as five future tax years. The higher your tax bracket, the more
you save.

Gifts of securities (individual stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares) and certain
other assets that have increased in value since you have owned them can result in
even greater tax savings. Not only are such gifts generally deductible from income
tax at full value if owned for longer than one year, they also enable you to bypass
capital gains tax that would have been due on the sale. Such gifts can eliminate
tax on up to 30 percent of your AGI.
Donating appreciated real estate or other personal property can mean that a full
deduction is realized free of the capital gains tax.

If you own an investment that has decreased in value, you may consider selling the
investment and making a charitable gift of the cash proceeds. This creates a loss you
may be able to deduct from other taxable income along with the amount of the cash
contribution. In some cases, the combined amount of the deductible loss and the
charitable deduction may total more than the current value of the asset.

If you are over the age of 59½ and have an IRA or other tax-favored retirement
account, you may prefer to withdraw an amount sufficient to fund your charitable
gifts for the year.
Although you will normally report the income on your tax return, when you
itemize your deductions, you are entitled to a corresponding deduction for the
amount of the gift. This can result in a “wash” for tax purposes, with no tax
owed on the amount withdrawn.

The Oncology Fund
Arlene Lis
On the Oncology Unit, we are privileged to work with many
wonderful patients and family who are heroes and warriors in
their fight against cancer. While working with these special people
it has been a blessing, due to the funds received by generous
donors, to be able to provide comforts that are not normally
found in a hospital setting. These comforts, made possible due
to generous patients, family and staff, include but are not limited
to the remodeling of patient rooms to include microwaves and
refrigerators, a family waiting area that has a shower, bathroom,
microwave, refrigerator, couch and TV and up-to-date staff
education.
Our goal on the Oncology Unit is to provide the best care possible and to make the
difficult cancer journey a little less difficult. Our goals are much more attainable with
each improvement and comfort we can provide due to our donors’ generosity.

In the Words of Our Caregivers …
We are very fortunate to have the Patient/ Family Support
Fund available to support our patients’ needs. Many times
our patients come to us by ambulance but have no way to
return to their homes when it is time for discharge. Because
of this fund, we are able to provide transportation by bus,
cab, or wheelchair van as the need arises to ensure a safe
transport home for our patients.
We are also able to use the fund to provide medication
assistance. Often, patients do not have the money to buy
medications once discharged. While the social workers
and case managers investigate opportunities for low cost
or no cost medications, we will provide up to one month
of medication free of charge when other options are
not accessible.
Our patients are grateful for the assistance of our Foundation
donors who provide for them with this fund.

This spring we had the second-annual Gloria Kasey memorial lecture to
memorialize our friend and dedicated colleague. We invited three physicians
who knew her, Drs. Beth Stifel, Kate Neely, and Theresa Nolan, to
talk about Dr. Kasey’s life and practice and how much she meant to each
of them. This was a wonderful opportunity for her extended family to join
hospital and medical staff to remember the legacy of this extraordinary physician.

Baby Steps Fund
OB nurses Bari Servello and Naydine Hanna at
the Baby Steps wall.
The new Women’s and Infants’ Care Center
is thriving. We gratefully use donations to our
Baby Steps Fund to keep our patients and staff
educated with the most up-to-date methodologies.
We provide cutting edge patient teaching
supplies for our parents who have delivered and
those preparing for childbirth in our prenatal
classes. Six registered nurses attended seminars
to enhance our patient care in the areas of
advanced electronic fetal monitoring, labor
support, and breastfeeding. Our plans for 2009
include staff education in perinatal loss and
training two more grief counselors. We will also
continue to provide advanced electronic fetal
monitoring and breastfeeding education.

Redefining Chronic Care Fund
This Operational Excellence program encourages
real time problem identification, root cause
analysis, and problem solving with the goal to
eliminate waste. We have used the tenets of this
to classify and to prioritize problems on a daily
basis. Our goal is to provide the best in patient
care and to develop a culture focused on patient
needs.

history and physicals, discharge summary,
laboratory results and other key information
which enables the patient’s care givers to have
instant access to critical medical information
regarding the patient. The information is easily
transportable and additional information can be
added as necessary.

A Little Taste of Casablanca at the 2008 Harmony Ball
Approximately 450 guests enjoyed the night’s festivities and helped raise a net
amount of approximately $100,000 for this year’s Harmony Ball and Community of
