The agenda went over coatings ingeneral, generic types <strong>and</strong> why corrosion protection is importantin the offshore oil <strong>and</strong> gas business. The next Lunch <strong>and</strong> Learnwill be October 7 at Oil States Industries, an MTS member.YP group members showed their support for the Houston <strong>Section</strong>Golf Tournament by donating MTS YP logo pens <strong>and</strong> MTS YP shirtsto the auction.Puget SoundThe annual BBQ <strong>and</strong> Summer Social was held in June on theRV Golden Dolphin. Hosted by Ross Laboratories, the event wassponsored by the Puget Sound <strong>Section</strong>, the Hydro Society ofAmerica <strong>and</strong> the Oceanic Engineering Society of IEEE. Chair:Fritz Stahr, stahr@uw.eduSan DiegoThe section welcomes new leadership. Thenew chair is Scott Mau, a research fisheriesbiologist with the Southwest FisheriesScience Center of the NOAA National MarineFisheries Center. He replaces BarbaraFletcher. Mau uses ROVs for his fisheriesresearch on rockfish <strong>and</strong> abalone. He hasbeen active in section leadership for manyScott Mauyears, helping to run the section-sponsoredMATE regional ROV competition, as a supporter of the section’sstudent intern program <strong>and</strong> as section vice-chair. “As chairI am looking forward to being a part of the great things oursection will be doing this year.” The new vice-chair is DavidVelasco, the general manager for Brazil at MTS member SonTek/YSI. Velasco moves to the vice-chair position from that of secretary.Stan Logan, customer service manager at MTS memberTeledyne Impulse, took on the job of secretary <strong>and</strong> previouslywas a section councilor for three years. Beth Berkley with MTSmember SeaBotix will continue as treasurer.In June, 70 people gathered for the annual Corporate AppreciationDinner to thank the section’s corporate members. Theevent also recognizes those who have served on committees, aswell as any departing <strong>and</strong> newly elected section officers. Raffleprizes were donated by Sidus Solutions, SeaBotix, SonTek/YSI,<strong>and</strong> Teledyne RDI, who were all present at the dinner. Winners ofthe local science fair, which the section supports, were also onh<strong>and</strong>. The top science fair winner in the senior division, PrithviUndavalli, won $1,000 for “Encrypted Parallel FM Transmissionwith Arduino Chipsets.” The section awarded lesser amounts tosecond <strong>and</strong> third place winners, <strong>and</strong> the top three projects in ajunior category. Some other winning topics were “DNA Barcodingof Invasive Species in the San Diego Bay” <strong>and</strong> “OTC Medicationsare Affecting Aquatic Life.” “Recognizing the science fair winners<strong>and</strong> having them each give a brief presentation of their project isone of the highlights of the evening,” noted Logan.
