Candidates’ answers were usually detailed and relevant.However, they were not always well organised: organisation of subject matter (paragraphing etc) needs to beaddressed.Comments on specific questionsQuestions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 were not attempted by any candidates.Question 1The objective of this question was to evaluate the author’s language and style. Candidates should analysethe characters and their dialogue, as well as describing the writer’s style and its effectiveness, withquotations and examples from the drama to support their comments. However, this level of analysis waslacking and hence the performance was poor.Question 2Candidates performed very well here. Answers were apt and relevant to the question.Question 3This was well answered. However, answers should have been supported with quotations from the drama.Question 9Candidates performed well, producing good answers.Question 11This question was intended to assess critical ability. Candidates were expected to analyse the story,describing the key features of the plot and the writer’s narrative style. Instead, they simply commented onthe plot.Question 12Candidates performed well on this question.Question 13The performance here was unsatisfactory. Candidates were unable to explain how imaginary events wererelated to the historical facts in the novel and the impact this had.Question 14This question was well answered.Question 15This question was well attempted and all candidates performed well.51
