Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)The Department <strong>of</strong> Labor provides Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) for <strong>Mille</strong><strong>Lacs</strong> <strong>Band</strong> members that reside in Aitkin, Benton, Crow Wing, Pine, Morrison, and <strong>Mille</strong> <strong>Lacs</strong>counties and for Minnesota Chippewa Tribe members residing in Hennepin, Anoka andRamsey counties. This programs provides individualized planning for participants to accesswork readiness training, support services, employment services and assistance to meetbasic needs, including food, medical and child care costs.General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Assistance/Adult Basic Education(ABE)GED and ABE are achieved through a combination <strong>of</strong> independent and classroom study.Instruction is also available for basic education needs. Technology Centers in eachreservation district and Urban Office provide opportunities to access computers foremployment and educational needs and computer instruction. The department is currentlybroadening its training options to include <strong>Ojibwe</strong> language and cultural awareness, jobseeking training, employment skills training, driver training, and family financialmanagement and budgeting. Trainings are <strong>of</strong>fered throughout the year.Department <strong>of</strong> Labor Work ProgramThis program provides subsidized employment opportunities for eligible adults and youthgiving them opportunities to gain employment skills and on-the-go experience.Elder Supplemental Income ProgramThis program provides up to $500 per month payments to assist <strong>Mille</strong> <strong>Lacs</strong> <strong>Band</strong> Elders whoare at least age 55 and are determined disabled by the Social Security Administration orwho are age 62 or older to assist them in meeting their basic needs.20
