Main FeaturesThe BVM-L and PVM-L Series incorporate TRIMASTER technologies. These have been customized forexclusive use in both BVM-L and PVM-L Series monitors, and provide the high reliability, accurate colorreproduction, precision imaging, and picture-quality consistency required by today’s most demandinghigh-performance and master monitoring applications.Using these technologies, BVM-L and PVM-L Series monitors not only achieve the quality of theirpredecessors – BVM-A and BVM-D Series CRT monitors – but also add innovative features for today’snew high-performance and master monitoring needs.Superb Picture Quality and Stable Color Temperature■ Accurate Color Reproduction• Nonlinear Cubic Conversion Color Management SystemThe nonlinear cubic conversion color managementsystem of BVM-L and PVM-L Series monitors uses a unique3-D LUT (look-up table) to reproduce precise wide colorgamuts meeting SMPTE and ITU standards, thus offeringmore accurate color reproduction. This system offershighly accurate tracking throughout the entire grayscale. The combination of this color management system withthese monitors' high-performance backlight systems - ahigh-purity LED backlight in the BVM-L Series and WideColor Gamut CCFL in the PVM-L Series - allows both typesof monitor to accurately reproduce color gamuts thatreplicate broadcast standards such as ITU-R BT.709, andEBU and SMPTE-C phosphor standards. In addition, BVM-L Series master monitors offer a unique“D-Cine*” gamut that reproduces the wider color spaceused for digital intermediate work.Unlike earlier CRT monitors, that offer only one colorgamut per model, the BVM-L and PVM-L Series allowthese color gamuts to be selected and reproduced onthe same monitor – a feature only made possible by thesemonitors' unique technologies.* “D-Cine” is a color gamut emulating the color gamut described inSMPTE RP 431-2-2007. The chromaticity of the green-red region is notcovered in full, however, the color shift is subtle in this region.■ Ultra-high Precision Uniformity BVM-L SeriesCorrectionHistorically, LCD monitors have a reputation for pooruniformity. The new BVM-L231 and BVM-L170 mastermonitors display superb brightness uniformity at every pointof the screen, performance that is achieved by aligningthe LED backlight located beneath the LCD panel. Thisis improved by two new and advanced technologies:precise adjustment of the LCD panel characteristics and asophisticated LED backlight control system. At the factory, grayscale levels are precisely measured inseveral key regions of the panel. Any differences detectedin these regions are corrected using an RGB LUT (look-uptable) adjustment system. This sophisticated LED backlightsystem then maintains the alignment using multiple opticalRGB sensors aligned together with the R, G, and B backlightLEDs. These sensors continually monitor and control boththe backlight luminance level and the color balancebetween the RGB LEDs. If color drift is detected, boththe color feedback system and the light intensity systembalance the corresponding LEDs – red, green, or bluein that specific region to maintain accurate luminanceuniformity. The combination of these two technologies allowsBVM-L231 and BVM-L170 master monitors to provide the levelof uniformity performance required for critical imaging.0.9000.8000.7000.6000.5000.4000.3000.2000.1000.000510500520530550570D-CineEBUSMPTE-CL231 NATIVE590610490700~780480470380~4100.100 0.200 0.300 0.400 0.500 0.600 0.700 0.800V positionH positionR-LUTB-LUTG-LUTLevelUniformity6

■ Multiple Color Gamuts PVM-L Series(SMPTE-C, EBU, ITU-R BT.709)The PVM-L Series incorporates the same color conversionsystem as the BVM-L Series – the nonlinear cubicconversion color management system – that uses aunique 3-D LUT (Look-up table) to reproduce precise colorgamuts throughout the entire grayscale. Also while widecolor gamut CCFL backlights can in general reproducewider color gamuts than conventional CCFL backlights, not all wide CCFLs are compatible with broadcast colorgamuts. The WCG-CCFL backlight of the PVM-L Seriesis designed to emulate BVM-CRT color gamuts. Andcombined with its unique color management system, this enables the PVM-L Series to accurately reproducecolor gamuts that emulate broadcast standards suchas SMPTE-C, EBU, and ITU-R BT.709 phosphors standards.Unlike earlier CRT monitors, which offer only one colorgamut per model, the PVM-L Series allows these colorgamuts to be selected and reproduced on the samemonitor – a feature made possible only by Sony’s uniquemonitor technologies. With the PVM-L Series, white can be reproduced uniformlyright across the screen. At the factory, grayscale levelsare precisely measured at each area of the panel andif differences are detected between areas, they areaccurately corrected by electrical means.■ Precision Imaging• Full HD Panel with 10-bit DriverThe BVM-L and PVM-L Series both achieve a highresolution and stunning color depth using a full-HD 1920 x1080* LCD panel and precise 10-bit driver.* The BVM-L231 and PVM-L2300 incorporate a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolutionpanel.• Exclusively Developed I/P Conversion TechnologyThe BVM-L and PVM-L Series use a sophisticated I/Pconversion technique that keeps the artifacts typically seenin LCD monitors to a minimum, such as edge jaggedness, conversion errors, and picture delays of less than one field.■ Picture-quality Consistency• High-accuracy Display EngineThe BVM-L and PVM-L Series use a 12-bit display engine, which allows images to be reproduced with high precisionfor accurate evaluation and manipulation.• Panel CalibrationEach and every BVM-L and PVM-L Series monitor iscarefully calibrated at the factory on an individualbasis, providing a high level of accuracy and stability forcharacteristics such as gamma and uniformity.• Color Feedback SystemUsing a color feedback system, the BVM-L andPVM-L Series achieve the stability that’s required forhigh-performance and master monitor applications.7

Operational ConvenienceBVM-L and PVM-L Series monitors have unique features which are made possible only by Sony’s flatpaneltechnologies. These monitors also benefit from the same acclaimed functions and operationalconveniences of their predecessors, BVM-A Series and BVM-D Series CRT master monitors. In addition, the BVM-L170 and PVM-L1700 incorporate a robust protection panel and a DC batteryoperationcapability, features which are extremely desirable in the field.Variety of Display ModesMost flat-panel monitors can only display progressiveimages at the input signal’s frame rate. However, theBVM-L and PVM-L Series have two additional and unique■ Black Frame Insertion DisplayCombining its high-frame-rate operation*¹ with uniqueBlack Frame Insertion technology, BVM-L andPVM-L Series master monitors dramatically reduce motionblur; a characteristic that is inherent to LCD devices. Asfor the BVM-L231 and BVM-L170, these monitors employBlack Frame Insertion using a method called backlightblinking. Sony's backlight blinking operates by turning thebacklight emission on and off within the duration of oneframe*². This newly developed method minimizes blacklevel rise in dark portions of the image.*1 Supports 120-Hz and 100-Hz frame rates.*2 This is not a dynamic backlightsystem where the light level variesaccording to the average picturelevel.display modes – Black FrameInsertion Display and Interlace Display:■ Interlace DisplayIn Interlace Display mode, the BVM-L and PVM-L Seriescan display interlace input signals as interlace fields. As with the Native Scan function, Interlace Displaymode offers faithful reproduction of the input signal andthe displayed interlace fields are free from the picturedegradation that can occur as a result of the monitor’s I/Pconversion process.100/120HzInterlace Display100/120HzBlack FrameInsertion DisplayNative Scan (pixel-to-pixel display)Conventional flat-panel monitors reproduce imagesusing scaling and I/P conversion due to their fixed pixelcounts and progressive scanning processes. NativeScan function is a unique display mode that reproducesimages without changing the input signal’s pixel count. For example, when an SD signal is input, BVM-L andPVM-L Series monitors will reproduce the image at apicture size of 720 x 487* pixels. For SD input in particular,Native Scan function also allows the image’s display sizeto be doubled to 1440 x 974* by duplicating and doublingeach pixel both horizontally and vertically.1920 x 1080 Native Scan 720 x 487 Native Scan* The 525/59.94i signal specified by Rec. Picture & PictureThe unique Picture & Picture function of the BVM-L andPVM-L Series allows simultaneous display of two inputsignals on the monitors' LCD screen. This function isextremely convenient for making instant adjustments totwo input sources, because there is no need to individuallyadjust the different characteristics of two monitors. This function comes in handy for adjustments between twocameras, special-effects creation, time-lapse shooting, and computer-generated graphics work. The BVM-L Seriesoffers four Picture & Picture modes, while the PVM-L Seriesoffers one mode:■ Side by Side■ WIPEBVM-L onlyThe two picture images are downscaled using adigital filter and displayed side by side. This feature isconvenient when making white balance adjustments ordetermining shooting angles between two cameras. The area of the two pictures to be displayed is selectedusing a vertical WIPE pattern, which is controlled from theBKM-16R. This function is useful when picture detail of thetwo images must be examined on a pixel basis. This isnormally used to review still images.■ ButterflyBVM-L only■ BlendingBVM-L onlyThe two inputs are displayed as line-symmetric imageson the left and right halves of the screen. By adjustingthe H-position controller, the two images can bemoved inward to the middle of the screen. An instantcomparison of the moving images can then be madeeasily and accurately, without the user having to movetheir eyes. The two picture images are overlapped for display, andthe mix ratio is adjustable. This function is useful to verifywhether a foreground signal is accurately keyed into thebackground signal, or when combining shoots with liveaction and computer-generated effects.Pixel ZoomPixel Zoom is a function for magnifying images. Aselected area of the displayed picture can be enlargedon a pixel basis, up to eight times in size both verticallyand horizontally. Because this function does not usescaling, the desired picture content is magnified anddisplayed faithfully to the raw input signal. This function isuseful when evaluating precise picture edges, such as forchroma keying.* This function is effective when the input signal is displayed in"Native Scan" mode.Error Signal12

HD Frame CaptureThe HD Frame Capture function of the BVM-L andPVM-L Series allows a picture frame from the HD-SDIinput to be captured and saved as a picture file onMemory Stick media*. This picture file can be used as areference for various purposes; for example, as for picturetoneadjustments between past images and for cameraframingadjustments.* Both standard-size Memory Stick media and smaller Memory Stick Duo/Memory Stick PRO Duo media can be used. A Memory Stick Duo adaptoris not required.Black Detail ModeAspect Correction ModeA major difference between CRT and LCD monitors is theshape of their respective pixel arrays. CRT monitors usea non-square array, while LCD displays adopt a squareshapedarray. Aspect Correction mode is a techniqueused by LCD displays including the BVM-L and PVM-L Seriesto overcome this difference and emulate the look of aCRT image. Using a scaling technique, this functionarranges the SD input signal to emulate a CRT’s nonsquarepixel array in a horizontal direction. It also appliesthe appropriate scaling algorithm depending on thevideo format, NTSC or PAL. An interlace display mode canalso be applied when necessary, enabling the monitor toreproduce familiar-looking SD images.Due to the mechanism of an LCD panel, backlight leakagefrom the panel surface is unavoidable. Black Detail modeprovides more accurate monitoring of black detail in dark,low-APL images. Utilizing a sophisticated backlight systemand a unique signal-processing algorithm in the BVM-Land PVM-L Series, the black region of the video level iseffectively enhanced*. This mode is recommended as anauxiliary function.* Video levels higher than 75% are clipped for display. In this mode, theclipped areas can be indicated with a zebra pattern.SD 4:3SD 16:9(Squeeze)Normal Scan Native Scan (x2) Aspect CorrectionExample of NTSC signal on the 16:10 aspect panel - BVM-L231487 x 2487 x 2Gamut Error DisplayBVM-L only60%down-cd/m21.00Factory PresetBacklight Luminance -60%Black Detail Modecd/m2120100Brightness806040200Black DetailMode75%Video LevelContrast100% 109%BVM-L231and BVM-L170 master monitors incorporate aGamut Error Display function that detects irregular signalinput. S-LOG GammaBVM-L only2048 Image SlideBVM-L onlyBVM-L231 and BVM-L170 master monitors incorporategamma tables to reproduce images captured usingS-LOG Gamma technology. S-LOG gamma is a techniqueused in Sony’s digital cinematography camerasthat allows the full latitude of the camera CCD to bemaintained throughout the production chain. Unlikeconventional systems, in which highlight contrast iscompressed, S-LOG Gamma logarithmically converts thevideo signal using characteristics similar to film negatives. This keeps the camera CCD dynamic range intact, even inextreme highlight areas. Both the BVM-L231 and BVM-L170allow reproduction as an inverse function of the camera’sS-LOG gamma signals. Two display modes are offered:1) S-LOG FullThis mode displays the full dynamic range of the videosignal captured from Sony’s digital cinematographycameras. The 2048 Image Slide function of the BVM-L231 andBVM-L170 allows 2K*¹ resolution images to be mapped,pixel-to-pixel, on the 1920*² full-HD panel without picturedegradation.
