BCN Welcomes New FacultyDr. Ravi Srinivasan joined the Rinker School faculty as AssistantProfessor in the spring. He is one of the few energy simulationexperts at the top of the highly specialized field of buildingscience. Prior to joining University of Florida, Dr. Srinivasan hasconsulted on Low/Net Zero Energy (NZE)buildings including the first NZE housingfor the Boston Housing Authority andprojects with prominent firms such as WSPFlack & Kurtz. He has conducted severalNZE and energy modeling trainings forAEC firms that was also attended by staff atthe Harvard University’s Office of Sustainability.The NZE training program he developedwas awarded 2010’s “Most InnovativeProduct” by Massachusetts USGBC chapter.Dr. Srinivasan has also had significantexperience evaluating the energy modelingwork of other experts and professionalsin the field of building science includingFormer Faculty UpdateDr. Don Halperin joined the School of BuildingConstruction in 1953. Before joining the School hewas in private practice as an architect. He servedas the first director for the School of Building Constructionfrom 1973 - 1980. He was instrumental ingetting state legislation passed that provided BCNand other state construction programs with fundscollected from contracting license fees for fundingresearch in construction. During his tenure atthe School he taught many BCN courses, publishedseveral papers and made presentations at nationaland international conferences. Dr. Halperin wrotetwo books “Construction Funding” and “Statics andStrength of Materials” 2nd edition with both bookspublished by John Wiley & Sons.Faculty & Staff NewsCounterfeiting Research Headed by Rinker Faculty Featuredby ENRThe October 18, 2010 issue of The Engineering News Record featuredas its cover story, research conducted by Rinker School facultyDr. Edward Minchin (Principal Investigator) and Dr. RussellWalters (Co-Principal Investigator). The research consisted offace-to-face interviews with 192 contractors, government officials,owners, manufacturers, suppliers, and insurance providers from theU.S., China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Pakistan, andHong Kong.The research focused on counterfeitmaterials, products, and equipment inthe construction industry. The researchis ongoing, and was sponsored by theConstruction Industry Institute. Thecover of the October 18, 2010 editionof the world’s top weekly constructionmagazine is shown in the accompanyingphoto. Janice Tuchman, Editor-In-Chiefof the magazine, was CommencementSpeaker at recent Graduation Exercisesfor the College of Design, Constructionand Planning.solicitation by Nakheel, the developer of the 5.4 million squarefeet Gateway Towers project in Dubai, to oversee and audit thebuilding energy and daylight modeling work. Dr. Srinivasan hashad the opportunity to serve in leadership capacities throughouthis career. Most recently, he chaired the Associate of Energy Engineer'sCertified Building Energy Simulation Analyst Board anddeveloped the course curriculum and exam that was attended bystaff from prominent public institutions such as the U.S. Departmentof State, Oregon Office of Energy and several reputed privateorganizations. Dr. Srinivasan holds M.S. in Engineering from theUniversity of Florida, M.S and Ph.D. in Architecture from the Universityof Pennsylvania. His research is in re(de)fining Net ZeroEnergy definitions to include a framework for maximizing renewableresource use through emergy analysis of environmental buildingdesign. He has several peer-reviewed journal and conferencepublications in the field of building energy and sustainability. Hisresearch in the field of building science has earned him the respectof environmental experts, many of whom have relied upon his researchin their own initiatives.Dr. Halperin was one of the fourteen representativesfrom nine universities that met at the University ofFlorida on March 19 and 20, 1965 to consider formationof an organization to be called the AssociatedSchool of Construction (ASC) which wouldmeet the needs of collegiate schools and departmentswith curriculum in construction. Today, ASChas more than 100 members.Dr. Halperin is now enjoying retirement living inGainesville where he owns two apartment complexesin nearby towns.BCN Faculty & Staff Win College CompetitionDuring November 1-12, BCN participated in a college wide competitioncalled Web Week. The college was divided into teamsand each team was responsible for finding missing links, incorrectinformation and other problems with the college’s websites.Sallie Schattner was the leader of the BCN team and was instrumentalin the success of this task. BCN won the 1st place prizewhich was a trophy and lunch.Congratulations to team members: Sallie Schattner, Dr. AbdolChini, Dr. Charles Kibert, Dr. Rick Smailes, Patty Barritt, DottieBeaupied, Jennifer Mashburn, Kim Stanley, Leigh Heller, LindaStanley, Lorie Drewke, Rich Kelley, Ginny Lawrimore and SrilataRevur.24
Faculty NewsDr. Charles J. Kibert recently attendedseveral green building events in SaoPaulo, Brazil. He was a keynote speakerat an international green buildingconference, Sustainable Building 2010Brazil, and spoke on the subject of netzeroenergy buildings and the extensionof the net-zero concept to water,materials, carbon, land, and emissions.He also conducted a workshop for architects,engineers, and builders onthe subject of designing and buildingnet-zero energy buildings. He is in theprocess of completing a new book onthe ethics of sustainability: WorkingToward Sustainability: Ethical Decision-Makingin a Technological World and is the lead author of thebook, collaborating with four University of Florida faculty from thedepartments of Religion, Political Science, and Forestry. He hasalso begun writing the third edition of Sustainable Construction:Green Building Design and Delivery which is expected to be publishedby John Wiley & Sons in early 2012.Dr. Edward Minchin recently had two papersaccepted for publication. “Use of InnovativeContracting Methods by DOTs –Project Managers Speak” was accepted forpublication by the Journal of Civil Engineeringand Architecture, and “Improving Productivityon a Troubled Bridge Project” wasaccepted for publication by the ASCE Journalof Construction Engineering and Management.He made two presentations to the CIBWorld Building Congress, held at The Lowryin Salford Quays, United Kingdom, May, 2010. The presentationswere entitled “The Move to Nighttime Construction – How are U.S.Highway Agencies Coping?” and “Managing Workers’ Compensationfor Contractors– A Synthesis.” Both papers were published inthe Proceedings of the conference. Dr. Minchin also presented thefindings of his research team, which included Dr. Russell Walters,on the research project entitled “Product Integrity Concerns in LowCost Sourcing Countries.” The presentation, with the same titleas the research project, was made to the CII’s Annual Meeting inOrlando in August. Dr. Minchin was recently awarded a researchproject funded by Balfour Beatty Construction Co. The researchproject, entitled “Performance of Construction Manager-at-Risk forHighway and Bridge Projects in the Southeastern United States,”requires contacting the DOT’s to determine their experience withuse of CM-at-Risk (CMR), as well as their plans for future use ofthe delivery system. He will be working closely with BCN andBalfour Beatty Sr. Project Manager Gary Vargas on the project.Fond FarewellDr. Charles Kibert was a keynotespeaker at SustainableBuilding 2010 in Sao Paulo,Brazil on November 8, 2010.The Rinker School would like to senda fond farewell to Daphne Choice.Daphne has been with the School forthe past two years as the Secretary andwas responsible for coordinating theGraduate Dinners, Welcome Receptionsand Homecoming BBQ as wellas answering the phones and greetingvisitors. Daphne moved closer to herfamily in Tallahassee.Dr. Esther Obonyo made two presentationsat the NSF sponsored "Designing theFuture Earthen Block Construction" Workshopheld at the University of ColoradoBoulder on the November 5th-6th, 2010.The first presentation was: "Advancing theStructural Use of Earth Bricks - Recap ofthe Tanzanian Workshop" and the secondone "Characterizing the Performance ofLignocellulosic Fiber Reinforced EarthBricks." She also presented a paper at theW78 CIB 27th International Conference inCairo, Egypt, from November 16th through 18th and participatedat an NSF workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, from November 29th toDecember 1st hosted by the Nigerian National University’s commission.Dr. Ian Flood received the "Best PaperAward" at The Second InternationalConference on Advances in SystemSimulation, SIMUL 2010 on August 22-27, 2010 held in Nice, France, for hispaper: "Foresight: A Structured GraphicalApproach to Constraint-BasedProject Planning." Dr. Flood has alsobeen awarded a $249,470 researchgrant from the Department of Defenseto develop a fast method of simulatingthe propagation of blast waves throughcomplex built environments.Dr. Jimmie Hinze had the third edition of hisbook entitled Construction Contracts publishedthis past fall by McGraw-Hill. He wasalso successful in being the recipient of tworesearch grants. One is funded by the Pakistan-UnitedStates Science and TechnologyCooperation Program and is entitled Establishmentof a Center of Excellence to Conductand Promote Construction Safety Research,Education and Training in Pakistan.The second is funded by the ConstructionIndustry Institute (CII) and is entitled Drivingto Zero with Safety Leading Indicators. He gave a presentationat the CMAA National Conference in San Diego entitled Safety-Driving to Zero Incidents and he participated in a presentation atthe CII Annual Conference in Orlando entitled Technology Appliedto Construction Safety. Dr. Hinze continues to serve as the Administratorfor the CII Safety Community of Practice.Dr. Jim Sullivan presented two papersto the ASC Regional Conference in Birmingham,Alabama, this past October.Additionally he worked with Ph.D. studentEverett Henderson and Master’s studentRyan Moose in completing designdocuments for the Macombre School inHaiti. The team will be pursing funds formasonry training in Haiti in the upcomingyear. Additionally, the ConstructionTechniques class performed retrofit andrepair work of over $6,000 worth of materialson two Rebuild Together homes this past fall. The studentsperformed in an outstanding manner and the community benefittedfrom their efforts.25
