BCN Advisory Council Executive CommitteeThe BCN Advisory Council Executive Committee held its bi-annualmeeting on October 15, 2010, at Rinker Hall. Present for the meetingwere Bob Angle, John Bennett, Lynne Capece, Abdol Chini,Tim Good, John Gooding, Paul Hardaker, Dale Hedrick, Sid Jordan,John McIntyre, Harley Miller, Jeff Nelson, Paul Oppenheim,Pete Pace, Steve Palmer, Chip Reid, Erik Sharpe, John Sofarelli,Ray Southern, Rob Springer, WayneWadsworth, and Karl Watson, Jr.- Dean Chris Silver joined the meetingvia Skype to provide an update onthe searches for the School Directorand the Shimberg Research Professor.- The Committee approved the suggestedchanges in its by-laws, increasingthe number of members fromtwenty-one to twenty-five. The committeealso considered nominationsand voted to select the following asnew members: Christine Beaudoin,Kiewit; David Schmit, Macauley +Schmit; Doug Wilcox, Scherer Constructionof North Florida; and EarleCooper, Hawkins Construction.- A new Student/Facutly Liaisonsubcommittee has been formed toprovide a closer relationship betweenthe BCN Students/Faculty andEXCOM. On the evening before thefall EXCOM meeting, ten BCN CollegeCouncil student members metwith ten of the EXCOM members for dinner. The purpose of themeeting was to provide an outlet of expression for the student viewson their educational experience at Rinker and provide a mechanismfor discussion on industry trends. Both EXCOM members andstudents were thrilled at the instant connection and rapport that thismeeting provided. They were excited to continue bi-annual meetingsof this type and plan to meetagain during the Spring 2011 EX-COM meeting.- The Committee has asked DeanSilver to organize a meeting betweenthe EXCOM and UF Provostso that the Provost can be informedof the views and activities of theEXCOM.- The EXCOM members who representtheir local BCN alumni clubprovided a report of their activities.As a result of the different clubfundraising, over $120,000 wasraised in 2010. These clubs set agoal of raising $1.3 million to createan endowed professorship. Christine Beaudoin is the FL Area Chief Estimator & Engineer;Earle (BCN 1977) is Executive Vice President of HawkinsConstruction in Tarpon Springs FL; Dave (BCN 1983) is Principalof Macauley & Schmit in Atlanta GA; and Doug (BCN 1989)is President of Scherer Construction of North Florida.The Rinker School would like to express our deepest appreciationto newly elected EXCOM emeritus members Bill Morthlandand Louie Wise III for their dedication and support of the RinkerSchool throughout the years of service as EXCOM members. Meet Karl Watson, Jr., BCN Advisory Council EXCOM MemberKarl Watson Jr. is President of the EastRegion for CEMEX, Inc. Karl is responsiblefor overseeing commercial cementsales activities as well as aggregates,ready-mix concrete, concrete products andgypsum operations throughout the EasternUnited States. CEMEX was founded in1906 and is the third largest cement companyin the world. In 2007, CEMEXpurchased Rinker Materials Corporation,which was founded in 1926 by M.E. Rinker,Sr. In 1988, Mr. Rinker sold his businessto an Australian-owned company thatgrew the Florida based $515 million businessinto a multi-national company withrevenues exceeding $5 billion in 2007.Karl’s interest in the construction business started at a young age.He served many years as a summer intern batching concrete, fabricatingsteel and driving concrete trucks. Karl started his professionalcareer with Rinker Materials in 1989 after receiving hisBachelor of Science Degree in Business from Palm Beach AtlanticUniversity and his Master of Business Administration from NovaSoutheastern University.Alumni in Higher EducationOver the last 21 years, Karl worked his way up through a varietyof positions. Prior to the CEMEX acquisition, Karl held two keysenior management positions for Rinker Materials. In 2001, he andhis family moved to Australia where he spent 3 years as President ofRinker’s Australian operations with revenues of ~$1 billion. Livingand working in Australia was a great opportunity and a growingexperience as a business leader as well as experience of livingabroad. In 2005, he moved back to the United States where he wasPresident of Rinker’s Western U.S. Operations with revenues of $2billion.The construction materials industry is Karl’s passion and in additionto his work at CEMEX, Karl serves as Vice Chairman andChairman-Elect of the National Ready Mix Concrete Association,is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Stone, Sand& Gravel Association, the Portland Cement Association, ExecutiveCommittee Member and Past Chairman of the Florida Concrete andProducts Association and RMC Research and Education Foundation.Karl is also honored to serve on the BCN Advisory CouncilEXCOM.Karl and his wife, Michele, have five children: Christopher, Lindsey,Karl III, Alexandra and Cameron.Starting in the Fall 2006 Orange & Blueprints, we have highlightedaccomplishments made by our graduates in higher eduction. In thisissue, we are highlighting Dr. Zeljko Torbica of Drexel University.If you are a BCN alumni and currently teach at a post secondaryconstruction education program, please send us a short bio of yourselffor publishing on this page.Dr. Zeljko “Z” Torbica received hisPh.D. from the University of Florida, M.E.Rinker, Sr., School of Building Constructionin 1997. He received the Universityof Florida President’s Recognition Awardin 1996, and also the Award for OutstandingAcademic Achievement and Excellence(1995) for his overall GPA of 4.0.He is currently the Director of the ConstructionManagement program at DrexelUniversity, Philadelphia. The program’stwo most noticeable recent events havebeen the launch of a new graduate programin construction management (Fall2009), with current enrollment of over 80 students, and the recentlycompleted (October 2010) site visit, which was part of initial ACCEaccreditation process.Dr. Torbica’s international experience of over 20 years includesboth academic positions at several U.S. universities (Roger WilliamsUniversity, Florida International University) and an extensivebackground in real estate development and construction operationsin the United States and Europe.During the course of his career, Dr. Torbica has:•Taught and/or developed over 20 different graduate and undergraduatecourses, both in the classroom and online.•Directed real estate development operations, with projects rangingfrom $50 million to $550 million.•Published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the most selectiveprofessional journals.•Served on multiple academic and industry committees, boards, andassociations.•Served on prestigious Baldrige National Quality Award Board ofExaminers.•Served on an international team that developed Certified QualityImprovement Associates exam for American Society of Quality(ASQ), which has become de facto world standard for certificationfor non-quality professionals.•Completed internationally acclaimed Executive Programs at ColumbiaUniversity and Harvard University.Dr. Torbica is a Certified General Contractor in the state of Florida,and holds Project Management Professional (PMP) and Quality Engineer(QE) certifications.Previously featured alumni in higher education include:James F.
