Feature The Chimurenga Chronic is a once ofnewspaper that was published in 2011that saw contributors writing alternativehistories.The Chimurenga Magazine launched aChronic library in 2011; it was accompaniedby a live music event in Johannesburg.The duration was between the19 and the 26 of October. The Chroniclibrary is a collection of posters, books,journals, music and films. These areall relevant to the research and evolutionof the Chimurenga Chronic. It providesbackground and context to theproject, this is done by allowing visitorsto create “wide range connectionsthrough diverse materials that both informedand respond to the newspaper.”Much like a museum the library is fittedwith print materials that are coupledtogether with audio listening stationsand screens where visitors canhave a look at the newspaper, an onlinereading list and resources are also attached.The success of this project hasencouraged a new branch, During May2012 the library will be spreading itswings and one is to be put in Kenya.During the Goethe exhibition here inSouth Africa, an exhibition that wasmeant to function as a time capsule, thatsuspended the normal pace was realisedat the Goterborg International Biennialfor Contemporary Art, in Sweden.Founder of the Chimurenga publicationNtone Edjabe was noted as sayingthe following; “it isn’t a Chimurengaproject if there isn’t music.” This isthe reason the Chimurenga Chroniccame along with a free audio CD inthe form of a mixtape which was performedand arranged by performer andacclaimed musician Neo Muyanga, titledDipalo or ‘those who like it count’.Neo Muyanga has contributed toChimurenga since the early stages, ifhe wasn’t being published he was busycontributing towards the conceptualisationprocess. Millennium Magazinewhich is a survey of art and designmagazine has Chimurenga featured init. The Millennium Magazine exploresthe different ways in which contemporaryartists and designers experimentwith the format of the magazine, andhow they use it to their benefit as a placeto present and showcase their artwork.
