Designers, students, buyersand those random people that foundthemselves in the wrong room at theCape Town International ConventionCentre. The hall buzzes as stallowners promote their designs, sellingthemselves like a lady of the night.The occasional wow is murmuredand a slight nod of approval from attendeesthat are impressed. Of coursethere is also the forced smile thatpeople use to hide a cringe. All thingsconsidered The Design Indaba is anevent that finds place in many people’sdiaries. Particularly because ofthe variety of speakers, followers andeven works on display. It’s an eventthat is primarily about sharing ideasand making design more functional.The buzzing sound might have beenfrom all the shoulders rubbing togetherfrom the mass of peoplewalking up and down between thestalls. In fact if the organisers weresmart they could have used the staticcaused from friction to power theevent, now that’s going green foryou.
